Andrea Mitchell: Why were you in favor of this? This is the first tax increase Republicans have voted for in 20 years.
Grover Norquist: Because, of course, no Republican voted for a tax increase. What happened was [President Barack] Obama had this Sword of Damocles over the heads of the American people with a $5 trillion tax increase over that next decade that would happen automatically unless the House, Senate and president voted on something.
The tax increases that he insisted on, all the Republicans in the House and the Senate have voted more than once to extend the Bush tax for everyone permanently. So, the Republicans are quite clear, they want the tax cuts extended for everyone. The president insisted on taking them away from some people. That’ll hurt the economy. He got his tax increase, but he can’t claim Republican fingerprints on his tax increase.
Mitchell: (laughing) Wait a second. I mean, we’re not living in the ‘Alice in Wonderland’ world here. There is a tax increase for wealthier Americans. It’s literally a tax increase. Rates are up.
Norquist: Well, what happened yesterday is that all the rates went up and then the Republicans and the Congress together took them down for some people, not for everybody. There was an automatic tax increase, a whole series of tax increases, which were then countermanded in a second bill.
Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. The same of lies from the same old liar. He is saying black is white, up is down, and cold is hot. He could not tell the truth if the actual sword of Damocles was above him and about to chop off his fat head. This man is no longer a threat to anyone.

The Bush tax cuts lapsed at midnight last night. Every R voting for Senate bill is cutting taxes and keeping his/her pledge.

gdnight. When Dems wake up they will realize they just made most of the Bush tax cuts permanent and lost their leverage for the next 4 yrs.

Grover Norquist is saying this is a good deal that honors his pledge. Tell me more about how this is a win for Dems? twitter.com/JesseLaGreca/s…

Note @grovernorquist's tweets -- twitter.com/grovernorquist… -- he fights like hell then declares victory rather than lamenting concessions

Where cons lost was they all broke Norquist's pledge. Senate Rs voted for tax hike for first time since 1990. Now precedent for "balance".
