The Blue Wave Was Real


Yes indeed, there was a Blue Wave during election 2018 and some of the races are still ongoing. There were some disappoints to be sure: Ted Cruz beat out Dem rock star Beto O'Rourke for senate in Texas; insidious Marsha Blackburn summoned both Trump and Pence to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a huge last minute rally to help her blast Democratic moderate Phil Bredesen; and somehow racist Steve King hung on in western Iowa while the rest of the state turned solid blue. Due in part to election day chaos, Dems Andrew Gillum and Stacey Abrams are barely hanging onto governor races in Florida and Georgia respectively while recounts and lawsuits are ongoing.

But in spite of those blips, there WAS a Blue Wave. The House of Representatives will now be have Dem Leadership on every committee and they are ready to investigate Trump and all his cronies in depth. TThe Blue Wave was great for women and minorities, sending a diverse group of House newbies to Washington to speak for the people starting in January. Dems have turned nearly every New England state blue from their state legislatures up, with only Republican Senator Collins hanging on in Maine. Some blue states are almost solid blue now, such as California, which ousted many Republicans at every level. And there were wild cards - a seat pickup in Oklahoma, and a vote in Idaho to expand Medicaid.

Trump is Putin's Pawn and Puppet

So the election happened over a month ago now. Trump pulled out a victory by winning states that every single pollster said he wouldn't win. Jill Stein tried to get recounts for shady dealings in Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, but the courts overruled everything except Wisconsin, which isn't enough for a Hillary win.

Hillary is leading in the popular vote by almost 3 million, one of the largest margins in history.

A month after the worst election in U.S. history, journalists and pundits are right back to wondering whether:
  • The Election was Stolen by Comey and Russian Hackers
  • Trump is unfit to serve, since he has already insulted China and won't take Intel briefings
  • We are screwed and democracy is over

These are things I've asked myself many times in the aftermath of the storm that was Election 2016.

But let's just go back to the last debate with Hillary Clinton in October, shall we? Trump says quite plainly that "Putin doesn't respect" Hillary Clinton, which is why she should lose. I guess to Trump, having the respect of a similar Narcissistic Dictator type like Putin is important. That's what Trump is aspiring to be, after all.

When Hillary stood up to him and called Trump a puppet of Putin's, Trump started screaming "You're the puppet, You're the puppet.NO Puppet! You're the Puppet!!!" Much fun was made of this on Twitter, and cartoonists had a field day, so it is easy to find examples. And that's a big reason why the news media and GOP cannot just shrug off accusations now that "no one saw" a Russian Connection to Trump before the election.

It's all over but the final voting now. Most pollsters say Hillary Clinton will win by a landslide. Meanwhile, the entire human race holds their collective breath.

Hillary Clinton Wins New York Landslide

For weeks the Bernie Sanders crowd insisted that he was going to "win big" in New York City. After all, he was a hometown boy from Brooklyn, and a few years, or even 40 years, living in Vermont means nothing when you have the Big Apple in your heart.

And indeed, Sanders seemed to have "intensity" and "momentum" right up until the polls closed on Primary Election Day and it all fell apart. Because Hillary not only won the hearts and minds of Democrats in the Big Apple - she got a landslide of support, higher than projected, both in turnout and delegates won.

Bernie didn't even win the precinct where he grew up. He didn't win any ethnic groups, not even the Jewish voters. Yes, he won in white rural counties with few voters and few delegates outside the cities. It just wasn't enough.

Supreme Court Upholds Obamacare in King vs. Burwell 6-3 Decision

The Supreme Court upheld the law about Obamacare subsidies in the states!!! This is a huge victory for the Obama Administration and for the country as a whole.



In a strong 6-3 decision, Chief Justice Roberts (surprisingly) wrote the the majority opinion in favor of Obamacare, and was joined by Justices Kennedy, Breyer, Sotomayor, Ginsberg, and Kagan. Justice Scalia wrote the conservative dissent, joined (not surprisingly) by Alito and Thomas.

The stakes of the case, King v. Burwell, were enormous. Had the plaintiffs prevailed, millions of people who depend upon the Affordable Care Act for insurance would have lost financial assistance from the federal government. Without that money, most of them would have had to give up coverage altogether. And the loss of so many customers would have forced insurers to raise premiums, seriously disrupting state insurance markets.
But two of the court’s conservatives, Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Anthony Kennedy, joined the court’s four liberals in rejecting the lawsuit in a 6-3 decision. Roberts delivered the opinion for the majority. And the decision was a concise, stinging rebuke of the plaintiffs, who contended that Congress intended to write a law that would leave so many people without coverage, and cause such disarray.
"Congress passed the Affordable Care Act to improve health insurance markets, not destroy them," Roberts wrote.














Scalia was scathing in his dissent. He clearly wanted to give the GOP a victory, so slammed his colleagues for giving the President a huge victory instead.

. . . "Today's interpretation is not merely unnatural; it is unheard of," he wrote. That is, strictly speaking, true, since this was a new case.
"We should start calling this law SCOTUScare."
"This case requires us to decide whether someone who buys insurance on an Exchange established by the Secretary gets tax credits. You would think the answer would be obvious -- so obvious there would hardly be a need for the Supreme Court to hear a case about it," Scalia wrote, again accurately, though not in the way he meant.
"The Court's next bit of interpretive jiggery-pokery..."
"Pure applesauce," he insisted.

Meanwhile, President Obama called for the GOP to move forward and stop trying to repeal Obamacare for the 60th time.

BIDEN: But I always say what I mean. And so does Romney.

RYAN: We want everybody to succeed. We want to get people out of poverty, in the middle class, onto a life of self-sufficiently. We believe in opportunity and upward mobility. That's what we're going to push for in a Romney administration.

RADDATZ: Vice president? I have a feeling you have a few things to say here.

BIDEN: The idea -- if you heard that -- that little soliloquy on 47 percent and you think he just made a mistake, then I think you're -- I -- I think -- I got a bridge to sell you.

BIDEN: I love my friend here. I -- I'm not allowed to show letters but go on our website, he sent me two letters saying, "By the way, can you send me some stimulus money for companies here in the state of Wisconsin?" We sent millions of dollars. You know...

RADDATZ: You did ask for stimulus money, correct?

BIDEN: Sure he did. By the way...

RYAN: On two occasions we -- we -- we advocated for constituents who were applying for grants. That's what we do. We do that for all constituents who are...

(CROSSTALK) BIDEN: I love that. I love that. This was such a bad program and he writes me a letter saying -- writes the Department of Energy a letter saying, "The reason we need this stimulus, it will create growth and jobs." His words. And now he's sitting here looking at me.

. . . I wish he would just tell -- be a little more candid.

. . . By the way, any letter you send me, I'll entertain.

RYAN: I appreciate that, Joe.

BIDEN: Number two, "guaranteed benefit"? It's a voucher. When they first proposed -- when the congressman had his first voucher program, the CBO said it would cost $6,400 a year, Martha, more for every senior, 55 and below, when they got there. He knew that, yet he got all the guys in Congress and women in the Republican Party to vote for it. Governor Romney, knowing that, said, I would sign it, were I there.

Who you believe, the AMA, me, a guy who's fought his whole life for this, or somebody who would actually put in motion a plan that knowingly cut -- added $6,400 a year more to the cost of Medicare?

Now they got a new plan: "Trust me, it's not going to cost you any more." Folks, follow your instincts on this one.

And with regard to Social Security, we will not -- we will not privatize it. If we had listened to Romney, Governor Romney, and the congressman during the Bush years, imagine where all those seniors would be now if their money had been in the market.

Their ideas are old and their ideas are bad, and they eliminate the guarantee of Medicare.

RYAN: Here's the problem. They got caught with their hands in the cookie jar, turning Medicare into a piggybank for Obamacare. Their own actuary from the administration came to Congress and said one out of six hospitals and nursing homes are going to go out of business as a result of this.

BIDEN: That's not what they said.

RYAN: 7.4 million seniors are projected to lose their current Medicare Advantage coverage they have. That's a $3,200 benefit cut.

BIDEN: That didn't happen.

RYAN: What we're saying...

BIDEN: More people signed up.

RYAN: These are from your own actuaries.

BIDEN: More -- more -- more people signed up for Medicare Advantage after the change.

RYAN: What -- there's...

BIDEN: Nobody is...

(CROSSTALK)

RYAN: Mr. Vice President, I know...

BIDEN: No, this is...

(CROSSTALK)

RYAN: Mr. Vice President, I know you're under a lot of duress to make up for lost ground, but I think people would be better served if we don't keep interrupting each other.

BIDEN: Well, don't take all the four minutes then.

Clinton evoked nothing more than a country lawyer earnestly trying to save his client, and willing to exhaust every argument at his disposal to do it. He seemed as if he would not rest until he had you on his side, and while he was having fun and hamming it up, there was an undisguised earnestness that forced you to actually consider what he was saying.
"Folks, whether the American people believe what I just said or not may be the whole election," Clinton said. "I just want you to know that I believe it. With all my heart, I believe it."
A few minutes after Clinton was finished, a spokesman for the Romney campaign delivered its response: ""President Clinton drew a stark contrast between himself and President Obama tonight." He did nothing of the sort, of course. But the point was, the GOP knew it wouldn't get far taking on Clinton. Instead, the Republicans could only hope he was so good at pumping up Obama that Obama might pale in comparison. In its way, that was the greatest tribute of all.
