Democrats Hold Sit-In on Gun Control

The Democrats in Congress held a "sit-in" protest last week on the literal floor of the House of Representatives after Speaker Paul Ryan refused to allow a vote on gun control after the horrendous Orlando shooting. What they wanted was a way to keep terrorists on the no-fly list from buying assault weapons - something that seems like a no-brainer to a majority of Americans.

But Speaker Ryan called the protest a "publicity stunt" - never mind that he is the king of the Fake Charity Publicity Stunt, or that his own party has wasted time with Tea Party Shutdown and the silly Ted Cruz filibuster of Obamacare.

No, this protest was the real deal. When Paul Ryan attempted to shut it down by turning off the C-Span cameras, the Dems started filming the proceedings with their own phones and broadcasting to the world with the Periscope app. Almost immediately, C-Span picked up the Periscope feed and used it instead of the regular camera feed from Congress, completely bypassing Paul Ryan and making history.

While the sit-in ended with no legislation, the protest gave hope to the families of victims that eventually the logjam caused by threats from the NRA towards GOP politicians will fail.

I hope we can do it without another terrorist attack,” said Senator Lindsey Graham, a Republican who supported Collins.
A few hours earlier, Democratic lawmakers ended a sit-in protest in the House of Representatives over guns.
Fueled by Chinese food and pizzas, dozens of them stayed on the House floor all night, at times bursting into the civil rights anthem "We Shall Overcome" before giving up their protest after 25 hours.
"It's not a struggle that lasts for one day, or one week, or one month, or one year," said Representative John Lewis, a Democrat from Georgia and a key figure in the civil rights protests of the 1960s. "We're going to win the struggle," said Lewis, who led the House sit-in.

#NRA Portrays Gun Control Activist Shannon Watts as a Stepford Wife

The National Rifle Association is always proud when a woman straps on a gun and walks through Target or Home Depot, but they really despise women who want gun control. That's why in a recent article, the NRA is attacking Shannon Watts, the activist Mom who created "Moms Demand Action."

In an article called "Not Watt She Seems," NRA has chosen to demean Watts by making her the caricature of a 50's retro paper-doll housewife surrounded by household objects such as a feather duster, an iron, and a spatula. In essence, the NRA is depicting women as Stepford Wives.

Her children were all well into school-age or older, so it’s likely that she had plenty of time to run her business during the day. Watts’ biography on Linkedin.com states that she ran the public relations firm until June 2012. Also, for the 20 months ending in June 2012, she was a consultant for the large public relations firm FleishmanHillard. Also, in May 2010, Watts and her husband opened the Watts Fine Art gallery in Zionsville, Ind. There’s nothing wrong with that, except “running a streetfront art gallery plus public relations business from my house” is not the impression conveyed by “stay-at-home mom.”

"The idea that I might be able to stay home and do something other than cook and clean seems beyond their grasp," Watts says. "They believe real moms wear dresses from the 1950s and use rotary telephones and iron — which, in my opinion, is what the dryer is for."
The image is an odd move for an organization so actively courting women to join their ranks.
"For them to denigrate women, who make up the majority of the electorate, seems incredibly short-sighted," Watts says.

Rebranding?

The NRA ultimately loses the argument by insisting that Watts has no right to be as accomplished as she is, since she calls herself a stay-at-home mother. That is insulting to all women throughout history, It seems as if Wayne La Pierre believes the old cliche of women being "just a housewife," as if women were ever "just" anything.

The ironic thing about the NRA's argument is that it portrays Watts as both an accomplished and effective activist, so they are admitting they have a Renaissance woman as an adversary. And now that they are throwing down the gauntlet, even bringing the ages of her children into their criticism, they deserve whatever despicable fate awaits them in the future.

Watts and @MomsDemand fought back in social media with the hashtag #MomsNotMaids and graphics making fun of the NRA's backward and sexist view of women.

Stacey "Don't Say Gay" Campfield Voted Out in Tennessee

God Bless Knox County, Tennessee. They got rid of crazy state senator Stacey Campfield on Thursday in the Republican Primary.

Campfield had several famous snafus over the years that have drawn national attention, mainly because he is really really profoundly stupid.

He wanted to pass a "Don't Say Gay" law for the schools, and toss teachers into jail if they ever mentioned the subject. Plus, he went on the record with his views about AIDS being a disease for people who "have sex with monkeys" and never for heterosexuals. *facepalm*

Then he wanted to tie foodstamps and welfare for families to the grades their children were making in schools. Yeah, because kids having trouble with school shouldn't be able to eat, and neither should their parents and siblings. Are there no workhouses?

When he came across some little children and their mothers protesting his ideas in the hallways of the Statehouse, he mocked them by saying their parents were using them as "Props." That also made the national news. The Moms were not amused, to say the least. I bet they would love to see Campfield's report cards!

Campfield also posted what he thought was a humorous picture of a weaponized pressure cooker after the Boston Bombing. He was apparently trying (and failing) to say that it's as useless to ban assault rifles as it is to ban pressure cookers, or something like that - except that most pressure cookers are not weaponized, and people were either dead or in the hospital! He later removed the blog post after uproar ensued. Then he tried to gloss over it with an equally asinine statement about the Sandy Hook Massacre, which he also later moved, but I made a copy of it. Total genius at making a jerk of himself in the most insensitive way possible.

I Just got a call from the media saying they had gotten a few calls (about a blog post I did) saying it was inappropriate after the Boston bombing.
Really?
If my post was inappropriate talking about "crock pot control" then where is the outrage from the left when they push for gun control after the Sandy Hook shooting? Im sorry if I exposed your double standard....

Tennessee state Sen. Stacey Campfield, R-Knoxville, who has made national headlines for backing controversial bills and making statements lampooned by late-night comedians, lost his bid for a second Senate term decisively Thursday.
Campfield, a mainstay at the legislature since being elected to the House in 2004, finished with 5,824 votes, just 28 percent of the overall vote, compared to 13,977 votes, 67 percent, for Richard Briggs, a Knox County commissioner.
He was still being an offensive moron even this year:

Most recently, Campfield made national news when he compared the federal health care law to the forced transportation of Jews to concentration camps during the Holocaust in a blog post.

"Democrats bragging about the number of mandatory sign-ups for Obamacare is like Germans bragging about the number of mandatory sign-ups for 'train rides' for Jews in the 40s," he wrote. The misspelling of "mandatory" appeared in the original text.

Campfield's remark drew swift condemnation and demands for apology from both Democratic and Republican leaders in the state - including the governor.

"Words matter, and to make the comparison to the Holocaust is wrong, inappropriate and insensitive," said Republican Gov. Bill Haslam, a former Knoxville mayor.
Always charming!

After he lost the election, Campfield didn't make a formal statement, but merely put the Frank Sinatra song "My Way" on his blog. By Saturday morning, the video had been taken down due to copyright. Seems like a fitting end - he didn't get his way after all.

#OpenCarry Storms the Home Depot

In the past few weeks the gun nuts have been parading around intimidating families at fast food restaurants thanks to the group Open Carry. This led to a pushback campaign from Shannon Watts and the gun control advocacy group Moms Demand Action which lobbied restaurants with hashtags #ShakesNotShotguns, #RibsNotRifles and #GrillsNotGuns. The corporations responded quickly by banning guns in the restaurants - common sense prevailed.


Even the freakin' NRA issued a statement against Open Carry Texas:

"[W]hile unlicensed open carry of long guns is also typically legal in most places, it is a rare sight to see someone sidle up next to you in line for lunch with a 7.62 rifle slung across his chest, much less a whole gaggle of folks descending on the same public venue with similar arms," the statement said. "Let's not mince words, not only is it rare, it's downright weird and certainly not a practical way to go normally about your business while being prepared to defend yourself. To those who are not acquainted with the dubious practice of using public displays of firearms as a means to draw attention to oneself or one's cause, it can be downright scary. It makes folks who might normally be perfectly open-minded about firearms feel uncomfortable and question the motives of pro-gun advocates."

The NRA made clear it "does not support bans on personalized guns or on carrying firearms in public, including in restaurants. " But it concluded that "when people act without thinking, or without consideration for others – especially when it comes to firearms – they set the stage for further restrictions on our rights."

But rare common sense from NRA didn't stop Open Carry, whose members stormed a Home Depot in Dallas this weekend.



And a new hashtag was born on Twitter - #Ammosexuals - men who get off on guns and ammo and can't live without them - like the guys in the pictures below. The term was coined by Raw Story:

So that is why we have ‘open carry’ days where groups of men trade in their week-day uniform of polyester pants and 3 for $12 dress shirts with matching ties from Walmart, for easy-fit jeans, a t-shirt that used to fit, and a backward-facing ball-cap before heading out a to fast food place to walk around carrying a gun in the noonday sun because …. freedom.

Saturday’s rally began in the parking lot of a Home Depot. Corporate spokesman Stephen Holmes said that while Home Depot allows customers to carry legally permitted weapons into its stores, “we do not allow solicitation or organizing by third parties on our property.”
The Open Carry supporters were not asked to move on Saturday. But should they return for another rally, Holmes said, “we’ll remind them of that policy.”

. . . The gathering Saturday generated dozens of critical comments on Home Depot’s Facebook site.
In one typical post, a woman from Dallas wrote, “Since we can’t know when this fanatical anti-woman, death-celebrating-culture group will snap, we’ll be going to Lowe’s from now on.”

Amy Hedtke of Whitesboro wasn’t worried about anyone snapping. She brought four children and two dogs to the rally.
“I’m anti-gun-free zone,” she said. “I’m a huge supporter of the right to self-defense.”
She joined group members at the intersection of Precinct Line Road and Mid-Cities Boulevard. There they waved flags that said “Come And Take It” and passed out Open Carry cards. Many drivers responded with horn-honking support.
Afterward, the group returned to the Home Depot lot, where a raffle was held. Among the prizes: T-shirts and boxes of ammunition.



Here are just a few of the thousands of angry comments left on this Home Depot's Facebook:

I gave Home Depot 20 years of business. Lowes will now get the next 20 years of my business considering the idiotic policy HD has allowed an armed group of socially deficient angry people to roam your aisles. What will you do when one of them sticks a product in his pocket and walks? Think any of your "security " people will do anything? Beyond stupid is this decision by whoever thought it would make people happy.

I live in Texas...and for most of my life have lived in the DFW area where this store is located. The MAJORITY of Texans (including the ones in the DFW area) do NOT approve of open carry events..we only approve of being allowed to own guns. As other places in Texas have discovered (Starbucks, Chipotle's, Sonic, etc) most Texans do NOT approve and we vote with out wallets. BTW, most of these open carry nuts are not gardening and buying lots of items from Home Depot in the first place. As to your comment that this is tantamount to them watching someone get punched, not actually doing the punching, I think that watching and not stopping it is JUST as bad as doing it!!!!

hey, be brave, open carry guys. Try it at a bank. A country club where GOP officials hang out. How about NRA headquarters? They won't let you open carry there, and we all know why. They don't trust you. Gun show? The organizers do not trust you enough to bring in your loaded gun. I believe them. Jim Carrey Rankles Right with "Cold Dead Hand" Spoof

Jim Carrey has written a reply to all the criticism coming from Fox News and the rest of the Wingnut-o-Sphere:

“Since I released my “Cold Dead Hand” video on Funny or Die this week, I have watched Fux News rant, rave, bare its fangs and viciously slander me because of my stand against large magazines and assault rifles. I would take them to task legally if I felt they were worth my time or that anyone with a brain in their head could actually fall for such irresponsible buffoonery. That would gain them far too much attention which is all they really care about.

I’ll just say this: in my opinion Fux News is a last resort for kinda-sorta-almost-journalists whose options have been severely limited by their extreme and intolerant views; a media colostomy bag that has begun to burst at the seams and should be emptied before it becomes a public health issue.

I sincerely believe that in time, good people will lose patience with the petty and poisonous behavior of these bullies and Fux News will be remembered as nothing more than a giant culture fart that no amount of Garlique could cure.

I wish them all the luck that accompanies such malevolence.”

Conservatives and Tea Partiers plan to reignite the flame of 2010 next Saturday at rallies in cities and towns across America. The event is titled the "Day of Resistance," and head organizer Dustin Stockton told Breitbart News that February 23 was picked as the date for several reasons.
“The first is one which I’ve been getting ruthlessly abused for and that is because the AR-15 caliber is .223,” Stockton said in a phone interview. “It’s also the day that we raised the flag in Iwo Jima and it’s also a Saturday, so people who work regular hours can also attend.”

I was disappointed at the turn out. I should not be. It has always been the 1% who fight for the other 99%, I suspect it has always been so!

(Wasilla, Alaska) Almost 200 people showed up to hear the speakers, and to enjoy the breezy weather and the gorgeous view of the Chugach Mountains in the background of Wasilla Lake. It was about 23̊F with a 20 mph east wind off the lake.
The proceedings began with a moment of silence in respect to the Founding Fathers and the Framers of the Constitution followed by a pledge of allegiance to the Flag. Typical Tea Party fare.
It was commented that while today’s weather may have been a little brisk, it was nothing like the experience of the Continental soldiers under General George Washington at Valley Forge.

The rally was wonderful! About 110 people were in attendance. The guest speaker's messages touched chords in the hearts of the people. We had an open mic in which people could voice what was on their heart. The liitle chidten were wonderful with the pledge and the young ladies lifted beautiful voices! Praise the Lord!

About 400 to 500 people gathered in Capitol Park today for a "Day of Resistance" rally set to correspond with similar gatherings across the country.

Any news coverage? From what I see on Google News (so far) this was the biggest rally in the country.

State Patrol estimated the crowd at about 400 people. All of them were passionate about protecting what they see as an assault against the Second Amendment.

If it is troopers there enforcing the law, they should enforce STATE law.

State Patrol has jurisdiction over the property at the State Capital (which is why THEY are security inside, etc). As it is state property, they limit firearms on said property.
As for Denver, without reviewing the ordinance, I'd bet firearms are required to be unloaded.
I see no reason to give the lame stream media footage of everyone wandering around with firearms. I saw a comment that empty holsters would signify legislation "disarming" us. .kinda liked the idea.

Georgia:

Got to Georgia State Capitol at 11:05AM and no one was there so had an easy time parking. After about 30 minutes of walking alone in front of the Capitol steps with my Impeach Obama sign, a reporter came over from an 11 Alive News Van (WXIA Atlanta) and asked if he could interview me on camera which he did do. Then he left and drove away. A couple of police cars then arrived and parked across the street watching me, I guessed for my protection. It was a cold and windy day. I was about to leave when one man joined me asking if I had another sign which I did not (note to self). After another 30 minutes or so we were joined by two more Patriots. So Georgia was represented by us four. My interview was not shown later on the new; no surprise there. (Just watched Sunday news shows on what I call Susan Rice day where the "news" media promotes the lies of the week of the Obama administration). All in all it would probably do as much good to put on sackcloth, go to the Capital, and carry a sign "Repent. The End is Near". That may have more impact,but, I doubt it. Obama supporters did not heckle us, they politely asked if they could take our pictures, as a novelty maybe, the last of our kind.

I made it into the square today. The sidewalks are pretty crappy still. Also, I was just made aware that you need a permit to picket and march in Macomb (sorry, I'm new to all this). So, I will be calling off the picket/ march. If you have already made posters, please bring them for photo ops. There is a slight chance WGEM news might show up to the meet and greet, and the posters might be nice for that as well. I am terribly sorry about this, but I am confident that we can still make a statement and get to make some new friends.

Due to it being winter, Landreth Park restrooms are "closed," Earlier this week I called to see if they could be opened, and after several phone calls they will not be open. We are asking people not to OPEN carry, for several reasons. The two principal ones involving the media message we want to convey to the broader public and the issue of insurance coverage. We are hoping in the future to be able to organize an open carry rally but for now, please no OPEN carry at the event on Saturday.

I would suggest that those who wish to carry openly, to demonstrate their support for the 2nd Amendment, NOT to carry loaded weapons or have ammunition on them. Just my two cents here, this rally is not for showing off your fancy new pistol. It is about sending a message to all of the anti gun group, and showing them that we are capable of controlling ourselves for an event to peacefully demonstrate our feelings towards gun control. People whining about open carry can carry any other time you want, arguing and complaining just sets the cause further back. Have some respect for the wishes of the organizers by following their rules, otherwise just don't attend!

Don't forget the squeaky wheel gets the grease. There are more wheels than you can possibly imagine that need no grease and are ready to participate in a very positive and respectful manner. . . . And I still STRONGLY suggest that any who DO chose to exercise their Rights also exercise some good sense and leave any ammo at home. We are not looking to get into any gun battles with authorities. If they attempt to violate my rights in any way, I will not resist and will comply... and they will be cutting me a fat check when my lawyers finish with them. I do not appreciate the attacks on other people that I am seeing. I have stepped up to organize this events. This is a public event in a City park. I expect other people to be there to use the parks recreation facilities, I want to be respectful to them and be non intimidating to them. If this were on PRIVATE Property like I would of liked it to be originally then, we wouldn't be having the technicality arguments about law and ordnance's .
To the people committing to arguing semantics, this is a PEACEFUL event you are turning it into something more than its not.
The purpose is to EDUCATE people, and to do it in a peaceful non threatening manner.
People seem to be taking it above and beyond my intent of Event Organizer.
I peacefully ask those who are arguing and attacking those involved to please calm down we are trying to accomplish this together.
The Politicians think we are ignorant idiots, and they think we are out of control people who need more laws, and from the actions of the people in this forum I think you are proving them right.

I don't understand why this is turning into a circus.
It seems people can't or won't follow simple requests.
This is beginning to look a feeding frenzy in a lions den, with no control and no direction.
Everyone is sucking the life out of this rally arguing semantics. I am trying to unite everyone in a common cause, yet people are driving wedges. I am trying to provide some form of direction. But no one can listen.
I get better cooperation from children than I find here...
I am not trying to run a campaign. This is a simple rally.
I am tired of being the bad guy.

I just talked to the police LT. Rifles and Shotguns are not allowed to be in the open within the city limits of St. Cloud. It is a city law. Handguns are Ok. but no rifles. I am sorry, and I understand it doesnt make sense. But we are the law abiding gun owners of America.

I was quite disappointed in the turn out in Buffalo today at Niagara Square...I would guess maybe 50 people at the most attended (and that is probably a gross overestimate). We drove 52 miles to attend the rally to show our support...I would think more people that lived closer (who didn't have such a long distance to drive) would have shown up for something as important as this....yes it was cold (even though we dressed warmly)...but we need to unite and let the government know we are serious! By the way, there were some very good impromptu speeches made at the rally.

Oklahoma:

More than 100 people gathered at LaFortune Park Saturday to defend Americans' Constitutional right to bear arms. This was part of the nationwide "Day of Resistance".
"There's always going to be violence in this world," said co-organizer James Miller. "Whether you label it with a gun or a knife or a fist or whatever kind of violence you want to call it, it's just violence in general. Outlawing a weapon won't change it."
Signs, music, flags, a petition, and even a few guns were present at the event.

I was very disappointed after attending the Day of Resistance rally at LaFortune ball park in Tulsa. The attendance was a scant two, maybe 250 people! Thinking what I had to go through to get there, I understood why so few people showed up. I sent 3 email requests to the DOR organizer site asking for information such as WHERE is LFortune park? NO RESPONSE! Nowhere was there one single posting of its address - just LaFortune Park! I looked for LaFortune Park in two different phone books, called the Tulsa police (non emergency # and got no answer), called LaFortune golf course - # disconnected, looked in Tulsa city map and found no such place. Finally when we got into Tulsa, we stopped at a QT, asked and got the address!!!!! WHY DIDN'T THE ORGANIZERS POST THE PARK'S ADDRESS? Did they assume that everybody knows where the part is?! I'll bet there were plenty others who gave up because they too couldn'd find where the park is! I highly recommend a much improved organization for the next rally, if there's going to be one! I would help.

Holding an antique early 20th century rifle at his hip, longtime Tulsa resident Alfred B. West had one singular message to relay to lawmakers he suspects are attempting to infringe on his right to own firearms.
"They ain't going to get my guns," West said. "If (politicians) in Washington D.C. get their way, my gun will be illegal."
The former Iraq War veteran was one of many who expressed similar concerns during the national Day of Resistance rally held at LaFortune Park Saturday afternoon to show their support for the U.S. Constitution and right to bear arms.
An estimated 200 people attended the event held in conjunction with other gatherings across the country to oppose recent gun-control legislation proposals in response to several mass shootings in recent months.

The largest rally in Tennessee is expected to be in Sevierville.
At the rally gun owners will band together to protect their rights.
. . . David Pierce says he's an average guy who owns a few guns. He had the idea to organize the Sevierville rally because of his concerns.
"If you disarm the citizens, then the government takes over. You have tyranny and people are helpless," Pierce explained.
He says when he started planning he expected it to be a small gathering.
"Figured I'd get 50 or 60 people to come," he said.
But then the Sevier County Tea Party got involved.
"It's gone gangbusters in a very short amount of time," said Steve Osborn, with the tea party.
Attendance is now expected to be at least 500 people from all corners of East Tennessee.

As someone who has participated in every conservative rally held in Washington, DC, starting with the million strong 9/12 march in 2009 and every T-Party rally since, I am astonished that there is no "Day of Resistance" to be held in either Washington or Virginia.
