The GOP Reacts to Obama's Immigration Order

One day after President Obama made an Executive Order on Immigration to help those caught in a tangle with deportation, the GOP has decided to "sue" him over it. Yes, sue him. Good luck with that. Every President in the past 50 years has used Executive action, and several have used it to deal with Immigration. So the law is clearly on the side of the President, who has the power to do good with his office, even when Congress decides to go to sleep, take a vacay, and ignore the will of the people.

The lawsuit, filed Friday against the Health & Human Services (HHS) and Treasury secretaries, challenges two of Obama’s executive actions: that his adminstration “unlawfuly waived the employer mandate” and illegally transferred funds to insurance companies.

Boehner declined to spell out how Republicans would counter the immigration executive actions, which extend protections to roughly 4 million undocumented parents of legal U.S. citizens and young immigrants brought here illegally when they were children.

“We’re working with our members and looking at the options available to us, but I will say to you the House will, in fact, act,” Boehner told reporters Friday morning, in the first televised Republican rebuttal to Obama’s prime-time address Thursday night.

Steve Schmidt of MSNBC went a little nuts over President Obama's Immigration Order, saying that now "We'll never know" if or when the GOP would have come up with a bill on their own. But ya know . . . they sort of had YEARS to come up with a bill, a plan, a man, a canal, Panama, whatever, and they never did. Now would they ever. So what Schmidt is really upset about is that the GOP can't take credit for immigration reform during the 2016 Presidential Election.

Ann Coulter Rants that Immigrants Will Finish Off GOP

Ann Coulter has never met an immigrant she likes, and now says they are going to be the downfall of the Grand Old Party. Call a Waaahhhmbulance!

As House Republicans prepare to sell out the country on immigration this week, Phyllis Schlafly has produced a stunning report on how immigration is changing the country. The report is still embargoed, but someone slipped me a copy, and it's too important to wait.
. . . Immigrants -- all immigrants -- have always been the bulwark of the Democratic Party. For one thing, recent arrivals tend to be poor and in need of government assistance. Also, they're coming from societies that are far more left-wing than our own. History shows that, rather than fleeing those policies, they bring their cultures with them. (Look at what New Yorkers did to Vermont.)
This is not a secret. For at least a century, there's never been a period when a majority of immigrants weren't Democrats.

At the current accelerated rate of immigration -- 1.1 million new immigrants every year -- Republicans will be a fringe party in about a decade.
. . . And it's fantastic for the Democrats, who are well on their way to a permanent majority, so they can completely destroy the last remnants of what was once known as "the land of the free."

To back her assertions, Coulter cites a study by Phyllis Schlafly, a fellow conservative pundit who has called on the Republicans to keep their party as white as possible.

On January 16, 2014 Coulter did an interview with Newsmax and said this:
We're a country. We are not a department store. We have to have some control over who comes into this country.
. . . I was thinking the other day it really is a dirty trick the Democrats have pulled because the vast majority of illegal immigrants are Hispanics, mostly Mexican, and you have to love them, they're such hard workers, and it's out of no animosity toward them. But the country has not voted to turn itself into Mexico. I love Mexicans, I love Mexican food. I don't want this country to be Japan or Sweden either. What's the matter with America as it is?

Grinchy AZ Gov Jan Brewer Denies Dreamer Rights

The Republican governor signed an executive order saying Arizona had no plans to give government benefits, including drivers licenses, to the tens of thousands of young, undocumented immigrants in that state who would be getting work permits and immunity from deportation under President Obama’s new immigration policy.

But while the order sounded harsh, at least one high-ranking Democrat in Arizona quickly threw cold water on it, saying Brewer’s declaration appears to be little more than hot air.

“It doesn’t seem to really do anything,” state Senate Democratic Leader David Schapira told TPM. “I see it as her once again trying to grandstand on the issue of immigration.”

. . . Schapira pointed out that Arizona already had a number of strict immigration laws in place, including one that barred illegal immigrants from getting drivers licenses or state issued identification cards. The law may have already been interpreted to bar any newly immune immigrants from getting those state IDs, Schapira said. That means Brewer’s order effectively carried no weight at all.


After the order was issued, supporters of the program and the DREAM Act took to the streets of Phoenix in protest. Video from Air15 showed the protesters carrying signs and walking down Central Avenue toward the State Capitol.

Denying young people who now can work the opportunity to drive legally, to more comfortably travel from one place to another – to get a job – is just hateful.
. . . The executive order probably wasn't necessary. A press release with a "reminder" about state law most likely would have done the trick, though in a less malicious way.
Issuing an executive order, on the other hand, is a good way to re-emphasize one's venomous feelings toward the Obama administration. And a governor who titles her book "Scorpions for Breakfast" is never lacking for venom.

But if all these kids get an education and a good job, who will she get to mow her lawn for fifty cents an hour? And if they all start contributing and earning and paying taxes, how can she feed them into the state's private prisons? Wouldn't having all these productive young immigrants contributing to society take the wind out of the anti-immigrant bigots' sails? And worst of all, wouldn't helping these innocent kids who've grown up here make Obama look good? No, she can't has did none of that!

Justice Scalia's Mind-Boggling Dissent

As a sovereign, Arizona has the inherent power to exclude persons from its territory, subject only to those limitations expressed in the Constitution or constitutionally imposed by Congress. That power to exclude has long been recognized as inherent in sovereignty.

. . . Notwithstanding “[t]he myth of an era of unrestricted immigration” in the first 100 years of the Republic, the States enacted numerous laws restricting the immigration of certain classes of aliens, including convicted crimi­nals, indigents, persons with contagious diseases, and (in Southern States) freed blacks. State laws not only provided for the removal of unwanted immigrants but also imposed penalties on unlawfully present aliens and those who aided their immigration

. . . They may well determine not to remove from the United States aliens who have no right to be here; but unless and until these aliens have been given the right to remain, Arizona is entitled to arrest them and at least bring them to federal officials’ attention, which is all that necessarily entails. (In my view, the State can go further than this, and punish them for their unlawful entry and presence in Arizona.)

. . . What I do fear—and what Arizona and the States that support it fear — is that “federal policies” of non enforcement will leave the States helpless before those evil effects of illegal immigration. . .

The President said at a news conference that the new program is “the right thing to do” in light of Congress’s failure to pass the Administration’s proposed revision of the Immigration Act. Perhaps it is, though Arizona may not think so. But to say, as the Court does, that Arizona contradicts federal law by enforcing applications of the Immigration Act that the President declines to enforce boggles the mind.

. . . Arizona bears the brunt of the country’s illegal immigration problem. Its citizens feel themselves under siege by large numbers of illegal immigrants who invade their property, strain their social services, and even place their lives in jeopardy. Federal officials have been unable to remedy the problem, and indeed have recently shown that they are unwilling to do so. Thousands of Arizona’s estimated 400,000 illegal immigrants—including not just children but men and women under 30—are now assured immunity from enforcement, and will be able to compete openly with Arizona citizens for employment.

. . . If securing its territory in this fashion is not within the power of Arizona, we should cease referring to it as a sovereign State. I dissent.

Scalia has finally jumped the shark....He claims to respect the founding fathers, but his dissent channels the opponents of the Constitution. Back then, opponents argued that the Constitution denied states their sovereignty by giving too much power to the federal government, as with immigration. Now Scalia echoes their complaints that states are being denied their sovereignty. States are not sovereign when it comes to powers vested in Congress, such as the authority over immigration and naturalization.

Would this Court, voting as it does today, have upheld the 1964 civil rights bill, the statute which declared it illegal to refuse access to someone because of race, at a restaurant, hotel or gas station restroom? Would Scalia, Thomas, Alito and Kennedy have approved such a decision or would they have joined in the dissent? Well, maybe Kennedy would have.
The fact is we have the most conservative Court since the 1930s and maybe more conservative than that. These Justices, led by Scalia, believe in original intent. They want to judge cases based on how the Founding Fathers would. Well, the Founding Fathers, need I remind us all wrote in slavery into the Constitution. It took a civil war and a 13th amendment to get it out.

Daily Caller Heckles Obama During Immigration Speech

Excuse me, sir...It’s not time for questions, sir. Not while I’m speaking.

Sometimes, the president does answer shouted questions. At the end of a March 23 Rose garden event, for example, he answered a shouted question about Trayvon Martin, a Florida youth killed in February.
On Friday The Daily Caller asked a question as his speech appeared to be ending.
The president rebuked the TheDC, but then he declined to answer any other questions when he finished his carefully crafted statement.

I don’t remember Diane Sawyer scolding her colleague Sam Donaldson for heckling President Reagan. And she shouldn’t have. A reporter’s job is to ask questions and get answers. Our job is to find out what the federal government is up to. Politicians often don’t want to tell us. A good reporter gets the story. We’re proud of Neil Munro.

The President today announced a very controversial policy and does not want to answer tough questions about it. Neil Munro is a veteran Washington reporter who today tried his best to time his question to be first as the President was wrapping up his remarks. He in no way meant to heckle the President of the United States.

It was discourteous. It's not the way reporters who cover the White House conduct themselves. The White House Correspondents Association always encourages vigorous questioning of the president, but that does not extend to rude interruptions of the president in the middle of a speech. I've thrown questions to the President before, but reporters typically wait until he's finished speaking.
