Joni Ernst and the #BreadBagShoes Meme ~ Updated!

Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa gave the main GOP response to the President's 2015 State of the Union Address last night. She's the gal who campaigned on the fact that she has castrated hogs on her family farm because apparently that kind of distasteful macho boast appeals to Tea Party wingnuts. Last night I'm sure Ernst hoped to shine on national television, yet she managed to sound as crazy as her cosmic doppelganger, Michele Bachmann. It all comes down to the phrase "Bread Bag Shoes," which is now a hashtag and a meme.

“You see, growing up, I had only one good pair of shoes. So on rainy school days, my mom would slip plastic bread bags over them to keep them dry,” Ernst said. “But I was never embarrassed. Because the school bus would be filled with rows and rows of young Iowans with bread bags slipped over their feet.”

Does anyone really believe this story? I certainly don't. And Ernst manages to sound as if she's just so happy to have busloads of poor children surrounding her in Iowa. But I bet that won't bother her when she votes against financial help for those same children, because that's what Tea Party members do. She is just like Senator Paul Ryan, who touted giving children an empty lunch bag instead of a free lunch. Symbolism and Irony are wasted on these people.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) shared more folksy stories of her childhood on Wednesday, telling reporters that she used to wear a bucket on her head for no apparent reason.
“I’d be walking outside our house and see a bucket lying there, and I’d say to myself, ‘That’s a perfectly good bucket, I think I’ll put it on my head,’ ” she said. “It wasn’t because I needed a hat or anything. I must have had, oh gosh, a half-dozen hats or so. I just wanted to wear a bucket.”
Ernst said that during her youth, she was known for poking a hole in a large piece of corrugated cardboard and wearing it as a poncho.
“I can’t for the life of me tell you why I did that,” she said. “I just liked the look of it, I guess. Nobody paid much attention to it. People sure don’t notice your cardboard poncho when you’re wearing a bucket on your head.”

Glenn Beck is projecting his delusions onto President Obama again as he freaks out over the success of Obamacare. Read and listen to how many times Beck uses the words "bogus" and "made up." Um, yeah - Beck has a vivid imagination and whatever you hear emanating from him is usually bogus and made up - a "fairy tale" as he says. He sort of creates his own mythology as he goes along - putting Obama in a dictator's "self-designed uniform" that exists only in his mind. I particularly like his orange-faced capslock-rage as he screams that he's had enough. Yessir, so have we, thanks.

This guy, you put him in a military uniform, I’m not kidding you, you put him on a balcony in a military uniform, this guy is a full-fledged dictator. There has never been any President who has ever done anything like this.
The guy goes out and everybody knows they are paid to clap. Everybody knew in the Soviet Union. Everyone knew that that was a game. That was a circus.
What are we doing? What are we doing? We're watching a circus happening in our own country and we all know it. And right now we're still allowed to say ...
This is complete(ly) Bogus. This is a complete bogus fairy-tale. This is completely made up. Nonsensical. The Emperor has no clothes. 
And everyone in the press - you rat bastards. Every single one of you know what he's saying isn't true. 
You know it! You know it!
. . . He’s a sociopath! He’s sociopathic! He doesn't care! Yes, he doesn't care anymore!
And what the media is doing - I'm telling you, put this guy in a uniform that he himself designed, because he'll be the greatest uniform designer EVER, because nobody else could ever design a uniform like he could. You put this guy in a self-designed uniform and this guy just goes on for four hours talking.
I'm not going to pay attention to these people anymore. I'm not going to waste my life! I'm going to do what I was born to do.
All men were created equal and endowed by their creator with certain inalienable rights. Among these are life, liberty, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS!!! I have a right to pursue my happiness. I have a right to do what I was born to do, not what they tell me to do. Have you HAD ENOUGH? My state of mind is great because I've had enough.

Glenn Beck is Sorry for Fox Fail

Glenn Beck expresses remorse over being a divider, not a uniter, to paraphrase George W. Bush. I guess he's talking about the way he urged the Tea Party to take over 'Merica and the GOP. However he doesn't Fox-splain how he could have tempered his message that the world was ending with death camps and U.N. helicopters because Obama the black Kenyan was in the White House. Never mind - it never made sense, and still doesn't, yet Beck is still on TV for some reason.



I remember it as an awful lot of fun and that I made an awful lot of mistakes. I wish I could go back and be more uniting in my language because I think I played a role, unfortunately, in helping tear the country apart and it’s not who we are and I didn’t realize how really fragile the people were. I thought we were kind of a little more in it together. Now I look back and I realize if we could have talked about the uniting principles a little bit more, instead of just the problems, I think I would look back on it a little more fondly.

Michele Bachmann Won't Seek Re-Election

Michele Bachmann, a Tea Party firebrand and 2012 presidential contender, announced on Wednesday she will not seek re-election to the U.S. House of Representatives but said her surprise decision had nothing to do with multiple investigations into her campaign finances.
. . . Bachmann also said the decision was "not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries" into her 2012 White House campaign, which is the subject of at least five federal and state investigations into potential campaign finance violations.
The Federal Election Commission, the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Office of Congressional Ethics, the Iowa Senate Ethics Committee and a local Iowa police department are looking into allegations about the campaign.




"Be assured, my decision was not in any way influenced by any concerns about my being reelected to Congress. I've always in the past defeated candidates who are capable, qualified, and well-funded. And I have every confidence that if I ran, I would defeat the individual who I defeated last year, who recently announced that he is once again running. And rest assured, this decision was not impacted in any way by the recent inquiries into the activities of my former presidential campaign or my former presidential staff. It was clearly understood that compliance with all rules and regulations was an absolute necessity for my presidential campaign, and I have no reason to believe that that was not the case."

Well, honestly, I mean, (Alex Jones is) now trending worldwide on Twitter and has been for pretty much since the show went out and I can't think of a better advertisement for gun control than Alex Jones' interview last night.

It was startling. It was terrifying in parts. It was completely deluded. It was based on a premise of making Americans so fearful that they all rush out to buy even more guns.

It showed no compassion whatsoever to the victims of gun shootings and, you know, the kind of twisted way that he turned everything into this assault on the Second Amendment is exactly what the gun rights lobby people do.

And it's a lie. It cannot be allowed to continue. They have to be confronted and challenged, occasionally, as with last night, I think silence was the best weapon against him because he just dug himself an ever bigger hole.

And the general reaction, I think, has been one of real horror that somebody with such a voice, a platform as Alex Jones -- he has millions of Americans listen to his show every week and he spouts this kind of dangerous nonsense.

. . . I have absolute respect for any American who wants to exercise their rights under the Second Amendment to have a firearm at home, a pistol or a gun, a handgun, to protect themselves and their families.

There are numerous incidents you can point to where that has potentially has saved a life and I respect. I believe that is what the Founding Fathers probably intended with the wording of the Second Amendment.

However, I see no reason and I come from a military family -- many of my relatives have served in the British army. They are as aghast as I am that, in America, I can go to Walmart, for example, and I'm not allowed to buy six packets of Sudafed or a Kinder egg or various types of French cheese because they're all considered too harmful to my health, potentially, but I can buy an AR-15 assault weapon.

I can get on the Internet, buy 6,000 rounds of ammunition. I can buy a magazine that can hold 100 bullets and I can then go to a church or a school or a movie theater or a shopping mall and I can kill as many Americans ... as I want to in the space of a few minutes. This madness has got to stop.


After appearing on CNN with Piers Morgan, Alex Jones made a video asking his fans to "watch his back" because he feared some kind of assasination by the NYPD.

I think we're being cased.
The way this'll work is, 'oh, see here they were protesting gun grabs and some crack dealers shot them,' These people clearly work for Bloomberg ... it was just super-creepy ... If something happens to us, we're killed by crackheads, it was the NYPD or the mafia they hired, period. ...This city runs white slaves, that's sex slaves, out of here all day, narcotics, you name it. This is mafia central.

ALEX JONES: We did it as a way to bring attention to the fact that we have all of these foreigners, and the Russian government, the official Chinese government -- Mao said political power goes out of the barrel of a gun, he killed about 80 million people because he's the only guy who had the guns -- so we did it to point out that this is globalism, and the mega banks that control the planet and brag they have taken over -- in Bloomberg, AP, Reuters, you name it -- brag that they're going to get our guns as well. They've taken everybody's guns, but the Swiss and the American people and when they get our guns, they can have their world tyranny while the government buys 1.6 billion bullets, armored vehicles, tanks, helicopters, predator drones, armed now in U.S. skies, being used to arrest people in North Dakota.

The Second Amendment isn't there for duck hunting. It's there to protect us from tyrannical government and street thugs. Take the woman in india, your piece earlier on CNN earlier, I was watching during Anderson Cooper's show, didn't tell you the women of India have signed giant petitions to get firearms because the police can't and won't protect them.

Te answer is -- wait a minute, I have FBI crime statistics that come out of a year late, 2011, 20-plus percent crime drop in the last nine years, real violent crime because more guns means less crime. Britain took the guns 15, 16 years ago. Tripling of your overall violent crime. True, we have a higher gun violence level, but overall, muggings, stabbing, deaths -- those men raped that woman to India to death with an iron rod 4 feet long. You can't ban the iron rods. The guns, the iron rods, Piers, didn't do it, the tyrants did it. Hitler took the guns Stalin took the guns, Mao took the guns, Fidel Castro took the guns, Hugo Chavez took the guns, and I'm here to tell you, 1776 will commence again if you try to take our firearms! It doesn't matter how many lemmings you get out there in the street begging for them to have their guns taken. We will not relinquish them. Do you understand?

The fact that Jones and people with this crazy frame of reference are allowed to own arsenals (Jones tells Piers he owns over 50), shows how big this problem is and how hard it is going to be to solve. We have let this craziness metastasize so much that if we tried to disarm the crazies, we would have 100s of Wacos across the country. So, we need to do what Piers did tonight and shine a light on the crazies - the more we show them to the larger population, the more their craziness will become apparent.

Santelli Throws Another Tea Party Tantrum over Taxes

If you put CNBC's Rick Santelli and the network's senior economics reporter Steve Liesman together on the same segment you know something entertaining is going to happen. Or at least we'll get a Santelli rant.

This morning on "Squawk Box," Santelli, who reports from the CBOT floor, went totally nuts on Liesman waving his papers around saying, "I can't even talk about it anymore" and then walked off the set. The pair were arguing over two op-eds in the Wall Street Journal pertaining to the fiscal cliff and GDP.

"He's gone," host Joe Kernan quipped.

"It's reprehensible that people go to Charlotte [for the Democratic National Convention] and say 'fairness' and then they run to try to beat the taxman," he hollered at fellow CNBC reporter Steve Liesman. "Shame on them! I can't even talk about it anymore."

And then he was gone.

The rant was apparently in response to a Wall Street Journal op-ed outlining Costco's recent issuing of a special dividend to avoid an expected tax hike due to the fiscal cliff. Liesman countered that a different WSJ op-ed failed to show President George W. Bush's less than stellar record for economic growth.

Surprise, surprise, Santelli didn't like that either.

I remember when CNBC had a focus on business and the economy. At this point it more like a cheer leading squad for the ultra rich. There are a few who are good like Liesman who tried to have conversations about economics and facts.
Santelli on the other hand is doing more of a bizarre art project. He looked very childish today. Funny thing is even Cramer has good points from time to time. Santelli on the other hand just rants.

Trader (sitting nearby, goes over to Santelli's mike): How about we all stop paying our mortgage? It's a moral hazard.

SANTELLI: Don't get scared, Joe. They're already scaring you. You know, Cuba used to have mansions and a relatively decent economy. They moved from the individual to the collective. Now, they're driving '54 Chevys, maybe the last great car to come out of Detroit.

KERNEN: They're driving them on water, too, which is a little strange to watch.

SANTELLI: There you go.

KERNEN: Hey Rick, how about the notion that, Wilbur pointed out, you can go down to 2% on the mortgage...

SANTELLI: You could go down to -2%. They can't afford the house.

KERNEN: ...and still have 40%, and still have 40% not be able to do it. So why are they in the house? Why are we trying to keep them in the house?

SANTELLI: I know Mr. Summers is a great economist, but boy, I'd love the answer to that one.

REBECCA QUICK: Wow. Wilbur, you get people fired up.

SANTELLI: We're thinking of having a Chicago Tea Party in July. All you capitalists that want to show up to Lake Michigan, I'm gonna start organizing.

(Whistling, cheering)

QUICK: What are you dumping in, what are you dumping in this time? Housing...?

SANTELLI: We're going to be dumping in some derivative securities. What do you think about that?

QUINTANILLA: Mayor Daley is marshalling the police right now.

KERNEN: Rabble-rouser.

QUINTANILLA: The National Guard.


After Jason Roney of Sharmac Capital makes some comments, it's back to Santelli.

QUINTANILLA: You know, Rick, one of our producers says if Roland Burris steps down, man, "Senator Santelli," the junior senator from Illinois. It's a possibility. I'm just saying...

SANTELLI: Do you think I want to take a shower every hour? The last place I'm ever gonna live or work is D.C.

KERNEN: Have you raised any money for Blago?

SANTELLI: No, but I think that somebody's gonna have to start raising money for us.

QUICK: Hey, Rick? Can you do that one more time, just get the mob behind you again?

QUINATILLA: Have the camera pull way out.

QUICK: Yeah, pull way out. Everybody listen to Rick Santelli.

KERNEN: He can't... I don't think... You can't just do it at will, can you Rick? I mean, you have to say something.

QUICK: No, do it at will. Let's see.

SANTELLI: Listen, all's I know is, is that there's only about 5% of the floor population here right now, and I talk loud enough they can all hear me. So if you want to ask 'em anything, let me know. These guys are pretty straight forward, and my guess is, a pretty good statistical cross-section of America, the silent majority.

QUICK: Not so silent majority today. So Rick, are they opposed to the housing thing, to the stimulus package, to everything out there?

SANTELLI: You know, they're pretty much of the notion that you can't buy your way into prosperity, and if the multiplier that all of these Washington economists are selling us is over one... that we never have to worry about the economy again. The government should spend a trillion dollars an hour because we'll get 1.5 trillion back.

WILBUR ROSS: Rick, I congratulate you on your new incarnation as a revolutionary leader.

SANTELLI: Somebody needs one. I'll tell you what, if you read our founding fathers, people like Benjamin Franklin and Jefferson,... What we're doing in this country now is making them roll over in their graves.

When Did Obama Know About Petraeus' Affair?

Did he know about it months ago, which seems likely?

Did he tell Petraeus to resign after the election?

If Petraeus had to resign because he was compromised, he was compromised months ago.

Did Obama leave a compromised head of the CIA in place to avoid some difficult politics?

Petraeus' testimony about this -- not the affair, but Obama's knowledge of it and offers to resign -- is now required.

Now that the Obama administration has succeeded in winning a second term, they are cleaning house. The two figures most linked to the disaster in Benghazi, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Petraeus, are gone. The figure most linked with Fast and Furious, Eric Holder, will be gone. The figure most linked to the administration’s economic failures, Secretary of the Treasury Tim Geithner, will be gone.

Only Obama remains. He ran out the clock on his scandals, and now throws anyone associated with them overboard.

The Petraeus resignation is only the most recent evidence that the Obama administration will lie to the American people to achieve its ends. But with all of his experts gone, Obama’s cabinet will now be staffed by the political C team in a time of crisis, both domestically and internationally.

Mitt Romney was at one point, and in some ways still is, an "establishment Republican." Yet he's run a campaign that has been almost from the beginning almost all attack. It was that way in the primaries, it's that way now. So if you have an establishment Republican behaving like an attack dog, you're going to have the Rush Limbaughs of the world behaving like werewolves.

This guy (President Obama) doesn't understand how to create jobs. So it's no surprise on why he failed so miserably the past four years in terms of job creation. He has no idea how the American system functions. And we shouldn't be surprised about that, because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent the next set of years in Indonesia, and frankly when he came to the U.S. he worked as a community organizer which is a socialized structure and then got into politics in Chicago. There has been no experience in his life in which he's earned a private sector paycheck that meant anything.

On his show yesterday, conservative talk show titan Rush Limbaugh angrily said Camp Romney needs to go after Obama on the college-age drug use Obama admitted to in a passage in his biography. So today Romney’s high profile surrogate John Sununu — yew guessed it! – raised the drug issue and also told reporters Obama needs to learn how to be an American.

Tampa Tea Party Trauma

What galls the Tea Party activists is the sense that Romney represents a lost opportunity for their agenda of less government, flatter taxes, and constitutional restraint. Facing a vulnerable president saddled with a bad economy and a crisis in the public sector, they feel stuck with a guy served up by Republican elites who speaks conservatism with an establishment accent. Worse, in this view, Romney seems incapable, or unwilling, to even defend himself, as the Obama campaign machine highlights his offshore bank accounts and his career at Bain Capital.

. . . “Romney’s just not a fighter,” says Jenny Beth Martin, head of the Tea Party Patriots, the largest of the activist groups. “That’s why it would be good for him to have someone like Palin speaking at the convention. He needs to do something to rile up his base, to make them enthusiastic. And I don’t mean just the Tea Party. I mean die-hard Republicans. I live in the second-most-Republican county in the state of Georgia, and the folks around here are not enthusiastic about him.”

Palin would certainly light up the base at the convention—her 2008 vice-presidential acceptance speech was, in terms of partisan enthusiasm, the high-water mark of the McCain campaign—but a jolt of Palin at Romney’s convention seems most unlikely. The Romney campaign prides itself on a slavish adherence to script, and Palin cannot be trusted to avoid the impulse to go rogue. That is why, perhaps, the Romney campaign has not asked Palin to speak at the convention nor contacted her about even attending the party’s marquee event in Tampa. Queries to the Romney camp about any possible Palin role at the convention meet with a stony silence...

. . . (page 3) “Romney has said before that he doesn’t want to have to light his hair on fire,” Palin said on Fox last week. “Well, there are a lot of his base supporters, independents, who are saying, ‘Well, light our hair on fire, then!’”
