Trump's Horrific Response to #LondonBridge Attack

 photo london-clipart-3.jpg

London suffered a serious terrorist attack the other day with multiple lives lost as pedestrians were rammed with vans and stabbed with knives:

Londoners rallied and started helping each other, as they always do, as sympathy poured in from the world.

On the other hand, our erstwhile 'leader' Donald The Trump spent the next 24 hours tweeting about fear of Muslims, pushing his Muslim Ban in the United States, and criticizing the Mayor of London - also a Muslim. He seemed to have no clue that emergencies call for a calm and cool response, not fear-mongering and political shenanigans. But then again, when has Trump ever been "Presidential" in any situation?

Jennifer Rubin writes in The Washington Post:

...The Brits fought back, launching drinking glasses and chairs at the savages who attacked them. The police acted with lightning-fast precision, killing the three assailants within eight minutes of the emergency call. And, God Bless him, a man returned to the bar where he experienced Saturday’s horror — to pay his bill and tip. Civilization is not going to be driven out of Britain by three or three hundred killers.
Meanwhile — and it pains me to write this — our president acted like a clod, a heartless and dull-witted thug in sending out a series of tweets....
. . . One is prompted to ask if he is off his rocker. But this is vintage Trump — impulsive and cruel, without an ounce of class or human decency. His behavior no longer surprises us, but it should offend and disturb us, first, that he remains the face and voice of America in the world and, second, that his fans hoot and holler, seeing this as inconsequential or acceptable conduct.

Keith Olbermann stated in his GQ "The Resistance" Video:

Let me apologize again to the world, particularly to the United Kingdom, on behalf of the United States of America. Donald Trump is not of sound mind. We are working to correct the problem as soon as possible. . . . In almost any other job in this country, assuredly in any other private sector job, no matter the financial cost, no matter the upheaval, no matter the blow-back, Donald Trump, our national embarrassment, our international disgrace, would have been fired by now.... everywhere from the Board Room at Microsoft to the deep fryer at McDonald's.

Epic Insults Greet Trump in Scotland

Donald Trump appeared at his new Scottish Golf Resort called "Turnberry" on the morning of the Brexit fiasco. At a press conference, reporters urged him to give insights into the world implications of the historic vote in Britain, but The Donald mainly wanted to sell hotel space to people taking advantage of the falling pound. He came across like a clueless used car salesman talking to the local Elk's Club instead of a possible world leader. History? What history?

Also, Scotland wasn't exactly happy to see Trump either. One local put up a Mexican flag which could be seen from the golf course. A comedian showed up with a box full of golf balls painted with swastikas, and was led away by security.

Trump made a gaffe about Brexit as soon as his plane landed that morning - implying that Scotland was celebrating, or as he put it "going wild" over leaving the European Union. The problem is, Scotland voted as a whole to REMAIN. And believe me, Twitter let him know just how wrong he was with some of the best insults the world has ever seen!

England's Historic #Brexit Shakes Up the World

 photo Brexit Fire.gif

Britain voted on a referendum to either leave the European Union of nations or remain part of the network. The conventional wisdom was that England would never vote to leave, yet that's exactly what happened yesterday, sending shockwaves around the world as the pound sterling decreased in value overnight, and markets responded to the new uncertainty by falling around the globe.

Perhaps the most disturbing part of the Brexit were those who admitted on the news that they though their "protest votes" to leave wouldn't matter, that London would vote to remain and that would save the empire - or something like that. In effect, the voters sounded ignorant and regretful that their votes mattered.

Brexit is a cautionary tale for the world - elections have consequences.

Fox News Frenzy Over Imaginary "No-Go-Zones" in Europe

Je Suis Charlie ~ Paris Attack on Charlie Hebdo

After the attacks in Paris by Islamic terrorists, Fox News in the U.S. decided to "Euro-splain" that many countries, specifically France and England, have segregated "no-go zones" for Muslims where regular people dare not go. Yes, they made that up out of thin air, and have had to retract all the outlandish statements by their pundits by apologizing on-air multiple times.

From The Nation
(Fox News Pundit Jean) Pirro was one of the apologizers, which she did almost with a smirk. She previously had “terrorism expert” Steve Emerson on her show, where he claimed that Birmingham, England, was a city-sized no-go zone and was “totally Muslim.” (In fact, the population is closer to 22 percent Muslim.) British Prime Minister David Cameron called Emerson “a complete idiot,” and Fox soon released a statement saying he was unlikely to appear on air again. (Emerson apologized, profusely, on his website.)
Maybe even more embarrassing was journalist Nolan Peterson telling Fox & Friends’s Elisabeth Hasselbeck that there are “741 no-go zones throughout France.” He said his own past trips to Paris were “pretty scary. I’ve been to Afghanistan and Iraq and Kashmir, India, and at times, it felt like that, those places in these no-go zones.”
Turns out, as Snopes found, the “no-go zones” are an international urban myth based on a bad translation for “zones urbaines sensibles” (ZUS) or “sensitive urban zones,” areas that “are not exempted from policing or French law, and are simply targeted for renewal initiatives.”

From MSNBC:
It’s not every day that a foreign leader feels the need to publicly criticize an American pundit, but under the circumstances, British Prime Minister David Cameron was on firm ground yesterday.
. . . Specifically, the British prime minister said, “When I heard this, frankly, I choked on my porridge and I thought it must be April Fool’s Day,” adding, “[T]his guy is clearly a complete idiot.”
In a separate interview, Gisela Stuart, who represents Birmingham in the House of Commons, added, “I checked whether this was some kind of early April Fool spoof, and then I thought he was talking about Birmingham, Alabama. But then I realized he was just utterly and completely wrong.”

From Politico
Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo is planning to sue Fox News for its inaccurate reports on Muslim "no go zones," she told CNN's Christiane Amanpour on Tuesday.
"When we're insulted, and when we've had an image, then I think we'll have to sue, I think we'll have to go to court, in order to have these words removed," Hidalgo told Amanpour in an interview. "The image of Paris has been prejudiced, and the honor of Paris has been prejudiced."
When asked to clarify which network she planned "to take to court and sue," Hidalgo replied: “Fox News, that’s the name.”

Jon Stewart on the Daily Show called the retractions by Fox the "rare foxus contritus of legend" for the "Zone Rangers."

"How bad does bullshit have to smell before the odor is detected by people who live on a mountain made of that substance?"

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal took the "no-go zone" talking point and ran with it, doubling down when asked to clarify, like the dumbass that he is.

From Talking Points Memo
Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal (R) on Wednesday stood behind his declaration that European cities have Muslim "no-go zones" and went on to say that if the U.S. wasn't careful, it would be seeing its own "no-go zones" soon.
. . . "If people don't want to come here to integrate and assimilate, what they're really trying to do is set up their own culture, their own communities," Jindal said. "What they're really trying to do is overturn our culture. We need to recognize that threat."
"If we don't, we're gonna see a replica of what's happening in Europe in America," Jindal continued. "We're gonna see our own no-go zones if we're not serious about insisting on assimilation and integration."

Twisted Remains of Richard III Make for Twisted Snark

Photobucket

From BBC News
A skeleton found beneath a Leicester car park has been confirmed as that of English king Richard III.

Experts from the University of Leicester said DNA from the bones matched that of descendants of the monarch's family.

Lead archaeologist Richard Buckley, from the University of Leicester, told a press conference to applause: "Beyond reasonable doubt it's Richard."

Richard, who died in battle 1485, will be reinterred in Leicester Cathedral.

His skeleton had suffered 10 injuries, including eight to the skull.

Mitt's Epic Anglo-Saxon Fail

We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have.
. . . Obama is a Left-winger," said another. "He doesn’t value the Nato alliance as much, he’s very comfortable with American decline and the traditional alliances don’t mean as much to him. He wouldn’t like singing ‘Land of Hope and Glory'.”
. . . He is naturally more Atlanticist.
~ Two Unnamed Romney Surrogates quoted by Telegraph UK

Wednesday, July 25: Mitt Romney touched down in London early Wednesday for the first leg of a week-long overseas tour to find a foot already in his mouth.
~ Slate

It's not true. If anyone said that, they weren't reflecting the views of Gov. Romney or anyone inside the campaign.
~ Romney campaign spokeswoman Amanda Henneberg in a statement to ABC News

Basically, their argument is Romney would just identify more with Cameron because he's white. That's really what they were saying.
~ Larry Sabato, director of the University of Virginia's Center for Politics

It was sixth century British monk Gildas who saw the coming of the Anglo-Saxons as God's punishment for the sins of the Britons – an apocalyptic view that would be right at home in the delusional wing of the Republican party, and proof that the basic British distrust of foreigners was alive and well long before the barbarians invaded. If the Anglo-Saxons taught us anything, it is surely that we are all foreigners in our own country. Perhaps the Republicans can draw some inspiration from that.
~ Ian Vince in The Guardian UK

Here's a Republican Presidential candidate saying that we should be more like the country that gave us King George to an audience that calls themselves the Tea Party. Ye gods, these people are the weakest link.
Hey Mittens? Want to be more like England? How about universal health care? How about all the strong social safety net and all the other European things that Republicans say they really, really hate. And why are Republicans suddenly embracing their inner British Loyalist now? Because the President is a black man and a Democrat, of course. I honestly sometimes wish President Obama would come out in favor of breathing oxygen, as it would cause some of his most ignorant haters to asphyxiate themselves out of pure spite.
~ Ministry of Truth in a Daily Kos essay entitled "Do Shut the Hell Up Like a Good Chap"

Anglo-Saxon is a bit of a misnomer, but even if we look past that and just accept the term as a colloquialism for the English people who were long ago ruled by Angle and Saxon lords, the idea that the U.S. and U.K. share an Anglo-Saxon identity still isn't really accurate. The 2001 U.K. census found that 85 percent of the country is ethnically "white British," which includes the Irish and Scottish whose forefathers were never under Anglo-Saxon rule.
~ from an article on Atlantic Wire article entitled "Sorry, Romney: Neither America Nor the U.K. Are 'Anglo-Saxon' Countries"

Despite his promises that politics stops at the water's edge, Gov. Romney's wheels hadn't even touched down in London before his advisers were reportedly playing politics with international diplomacy.
. . . The comments reported this morning are a disturbing start to a trip designed to demonstrate Gov. Romney’s readiness to represent the United States on the world’s stage. Not surprisingly, this is just another feeble attempt by the Romney campaign to score political points at the expense of this critical partnership. This assertion is beneath a presidential campaign.
~ Vice President Joe Biden

T]he Vice President of the United States used an anonymous and false quote from a foreign newspaper to prop up their flailing campaign. We have very serious problems confronting our nation and American families are hurting, yet the Obama campaign continues to try to divert voters' attention with specious shiny objects. We have more faith in American voters, and know they will see this latest desperate ploy for what it is.
~ Romney spokesman Ryan Williams quoted in the LA Times

One of his advisers violated exactly what they said they wouldn't do which is criticize the president beyond the borders of the U.S.
This is a case where there is a continuous fumbling of the foreign policy football here, and it does raise a question as to whether Mitt Romney and his team are ready to have serious conversation about a foreign policy
~ Obama Spokesperson Jen Psaki

Wow!! What happened to the traditional practice of not bashing the president when speaking overseas?! Romney better get a leash on his advisers, because this behavior is disgraceful.
~ comment by jostasauce on The Daily Beast

He's unintelligible in modern English, let him talk like Chaucer if he wants
~ comment by MikeDow on Guardian UK

I don't think the 'Anglo-Saxon' thing is intended so much for British ears. Like Romney really cares about what we think.
It's a laughably crude little dog whistle attempt to whip up the Republican core vote against the 'Kenyan/Marxist/Indonesian' President.
~ comment by myfellowprisoners on Guardian UK

It's almost as if 1066 and all that never happened for Mittens and his fellow believers...

Romney Uber Alles 2012!
~ comment by The Tick on Slate

Apparently the new GOP thinks George Washington, Patrick Henry, Ben Franklin, Thomas Paine and their ilk were of questionable character for not kowtowing to everything the British wanted. Why do Republicans hate our founding fathers so viciously??
~ comment by Mark on Slate

Did someone really say that? Wow. They can parlay this into campaign slogan for Romney: "Trust me, I'm 100% white." Or maybe they can replace this person with the McCain staffer from Pittsburgh who carved a B into her face, said she was robbed, and blamed it on a black man. This won't be the last racist garbage from Republicans this year, or even this week.
~ comment by cheesegypsy on Slate

Samuel Adams: What is an "Atlanticist"? Is Mittens making crap up again?
The Tick: Maybe it means he believes in Atlantis.
Penguin: Maybe that's where he has some of his off-shore accounts. No one will ever find those.
Deeter: Romney is Aquaman
Conversation on Slate

In other words, Romney is "The Great White Dope" for all the tea-party "Americuns"
Expect more embarrassment from RMoney overseas, he does not have a clue.
~ comment by Immir on Atlantic Wire

Romney insulted Irish, Welsh, Scottish, French, Italian, German, Swedish, Russian, and for the other White immigrants that are not Anglo-Saxon; my apologies, you know who you are.
And that of course does not include African, Hispanic, Native American, Chinese, and all the other nationalities (my apologies for not naming everyone) that make up the glorious mosaic that we call THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA!!!

Romney Dog Whistles: Foreign, Anglo-Saxon, Atlanticist

romney-foreign

From Telegraph UK
Mitt Romney would restore "Anglo-Saxon" understanding to the special relationship between the US and Britain, and return Sir Winston Churchill's bust to the White House, according to advisers.

. . . In remarks that may prompt accusations of racial insensitivity, one suggested that Mr Romney was better placed to understand the depth of ties between the two countries than Mr Obama, whose father was from Africa.

“We are part of an Anglo-Saxon heritage, and he feels that the special relationship is special,” the adviser said of Mr Romney, adding: “The White House didn’t fully appreciate the shared history we have”.

. . . The two advisers said Mr Romney would seek to reinstate the Churchill bust displayed in the Oval Office by George W. Bush but returned to British diplomats by Mr Obama when he took office in 2009. One said Mr Romney viewed the move as “symbolically important” while the other said it was “just for starters”, adding:

“He is naturally more Atlanticist”.

From MSNBC 7-24-2012

MITT ROMNEY: It's a very strange, and in some respects, foreign to the American experience type of philosophy. If you have a business and you started it, you did build it, and you deserve credit for that. It was not built for you by government.

MITCHELL: Without getting into the argument as to whether he is taking the President out of context over the "build it" business, he is still using the term "foreign" and I'm telling you, this is happening every day, it is a dog whistle.

CHUCK TODD: No, I've gotten a lot of – a lot of tweets about this, a lot of e-mails. People saying, "What's he doing? Why does he keep doing that? Is he dog whistling?"

MITCHELL: Well, what do you think he's doing?

TODD: And it is about – to take him at face value – it's about trying to paint the President as out of touch, that he doesn't have the experience, that it's all about...

MITCHELL: Out of touch is out of touch. Foreign is...

TODD: ...out of touch about the American economy, that he doesn't understand how capitalism works.

MITCHELL: Foreign is suggesting somebody who grew up in Indonesia, who's...

TODD: Look, I hear you.

MITCHELL: I'm telling you...

CHRIS CILLIZZA: Here's the problem, Andrea, from my perspective...

TODD: I think people hear what they want to hear on this.

MITCHELL: ...words matter.

Let's be honest, this whole Anglo-Saxon dog whistle is the gentile version of "birtherism" For any one knowledgeable in history, this is purely unabashed racism. What they are saying is that only a president who is white can fully appreciate the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
