Virginia's Brat Stumbles On Day One

The main joke about the Brat Campaign on Day One was their name. I saw many variations on Twitter of "Brat Wurst/Worst" or "Worst Brat." Then there were the jokes about the literal meaning of "Brat" as a snotty-nosed kid, a description that might apply to his defeated opponent, the snarky Eric Cantor, as well as himself.









But it turns out, all silly jokes aside, the Beltway pundits were actually awestruck by Professor David Brat, the man who "Vanquished" Eric Cantor the same way Harry Potter vanquished the Dark Lord. He was some kind of superhero who had not only melted the wicked Republican warlock of Virginia but had come out of academia like Indiana Jones cracking the bullwhip.

But then he got his first big network interview, and this happened:

Chuck (Todd of MSNBC) began by tossing Professor Brat a softball, asking whether the candidate supported a federally mandated minimum wage.
Bear in mind that this is a candidate, an economics professor, who had spent the majority of the interview up the point of Todd’s question, extolling the virtues of a free market. Yet, when asked for his position on a federal minimum wage he struggled to avoid the question, obviously afraid of angering any voters who might be listening or create any news he felt could be harmful to his chances in November.
Smelling blood in Brat’s lack of a solid response, Todd pushed him for an answer, causing Mr. Brat to reply—

“I don’t have a well-crafted response to that one.”

. . . “Hey, Chuck, I thought we were just going to chat today about the celebratory aspects,” Brat said. “I’d love to go through all of this but my mind is just— I didn’t get much sleep last night. I love all the policy questions but I just wanted to talk about the victory ahead and I wanted to thank everybody that worked so hard on my campaign. I’m happy to take policy issues at any time, I just wanted to call out a thanks to everybody today.”

So what we have with Brother Brat is another shining meteor like Rick Perry or Sarah Palin - flashy on the outside, but not all that deep on the inside. In fact, most voters will quickly figure out that his message is quite familiar, a carbon copy of Paul Ryan's rejected message from 2012: Money is truth and the greater good; the poor are moochers and immigrants are undesirables. Almost all government is BAD, even though he will be so proud to work in Washington and draw a paycheck and benefits for life.

And many have been quick to point out that the GOP has cast aside the only Jewish member of either the House or Senate, and a man who wasn't particularly religious, for someone who has some, uh, interesting Christian beliefs. Except I don't recall Jesus preaching much about Capitalism.

“Read Nietzsche. Nietzsche’s diagnosis of the weak modern Christian democratic man was spot on,” Brat wrote. “Jesus was a great man. Jesus said he was the Son of God. Jesus made things happen. Jesus had faith. Jesus actually made people better. Then came the Christians. What happened? What went wrong?”
“We appear to be a bit passive,” he continued. “Hitler came along, and he did not meet with unified resistance. I have the sinking feeling that it could all happen again, quite easily. The church should rise up higher than Nietzsche could see and prove him wrong.”
Brat encouraged Christians to harshly condemn their neighbors’ sins.
“We should love our neighbor so much that we actually believe in right and wrong, and do something about it,” he wrote. “If we all did the right thing and had the guts to spread the word, we would not need the government to backstop every action we take.”
. . . “I think the main point is that we need to synthesize Christianity and capitalism,” Brat concluded. “Augustine synthesized Plato and Christianity. Thomas Aquinas synthesized Aristotle and Christianity. Calvin synthesized all the rest, but capitalism was still coming. There is a book in here somewhere for the next Calvin. Go. God Bless.”



Brat is walking a tightrope like literary hypocrite Elmer Gantry - praising Jesus and Friedrich "God is Dead" Nietzsche at the same time, proving he is just another Tea Party schnook with cognitive dissonance, and probably not any nicer of a guy than Eric Cantor. And some of his campaign associates are worse, if that is possible (see quotes below). We know he is an anti-government Libertarian, but we don't know if Brat is a misogynist yet, so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (until he starts referencing rape and ladyparts). He ran against Immigration Reform, so he's obviously not too fond of the brown people. With his Biblical base he probably has a few cringeworthy things to say about The Gay.

So all we can do is watch and wait for the next shocking utterance as the new Tea Party "hero" in due time becomes the next Todd Akin or Ken Cuccinelli. Let's hope the Virginia Dems can get out the voters in November. I'm already planning a donation to Brat's opponent, Jack Trammell.

But come the fall, Brat may be an historical footnote, having beaten the first sitting majority leader since the position was created in 1899, only to have gone on to lose the general election. (Which is unlikely when running against a Democratic slave-trade / disabilities / vampire scholar in one of Virginia's most conservative districts, but possible, especially given how wrong all the primary polling was, by a clean 34 points or so.) Or Brat will be one of dozens of incoming freshmen Congressmen … which is to say, an historical footnote in the making.

The media is making it seem like Brat was some sort of underdog, but in reality, he's strapped to the hilt with billionaire support and billionaire money.
. . . Like hundreds of other college professors across the country these days, David Brat is really just a  bought-and-paid-for shill of Charles and David Koch and their buddies.
But the connections between Brat and the dark money machine don't stop there. He was also the hand-picked candidate of the Koch-backed world of right-wing media..
Over the past few months, right-wing talkers like Laura Ingraham and Mark Levin have been pushing Brat and attacking Cantor non-stop on their radio shows. Ingraham even went so far as to say that she wished that President Obama traded Eric Cantor to the Taliban in exchange for Bowe Bergdahl.

This is being branded as a tea party victory. That's not quite accurate, and Brat addressed this last night. Not one major tea party organization came out and endorsed Brat. Supported Brat in any meaningful way. We had a difficult time getting the tea party groups and Brat connected. They bascially told him, 'you don't have a chance,' they wrote him off.
And there were a few people -- myself, Mark Levin, Ann Coulter, Mickey Kaus, Breitbart News, The Daily Caller -- they were pretty much the only people covering this race. I said this yesterday on Fox & Friends. We had 625 people hanging off the balcony of Eric Cantor's own country club last Tuesday night and there was no major media there except for Breitbart News and a little reporter from the local NBC. That's it.

I hope it will at least shut down any more happy talk about amnesty this year. I wish it would have the effect of Republicans waking up and seeing that this is a winning issue for the Republicans.

And finally, Brat may want to get a new campaign manager. The one he has is only 23 years old and had to scrub his facebook account yesterday due to so many weird posts.

The campaign manager for the tea party-backed Republican who ousted House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in one of the biggest upsets in congressional history is a 23-year-old class of 2013 Haverford College graduate who posted a slew of provocative opinions on a public Facebook page that was removed from view overnight following David Brat's victory.

And we wonder why there is gender inequality in the classroom and in college/attendance/graduation rates.”

Upset in Virginia - Cantor Loses to Libertarian Brat

Eric Cantor is OUT in the Virginia GOP Primary. He lost to an almost unknown Tea Party college Professor named David Brat who teaches Ayn Rand's philosphy at Randolph-Macon University. This is the first time since 1899 that a Majority Leader in the House has been overturned in a Primary. The Democrats in that district just nominated Jack Trammell as their candidate, and weirdly enough he teaches at the same university! What a crazy race this will be to watch!

There is clear Shock and Awe amongst the punditry. They did NOT see this coming and have no way to explain. The only people more confused are Cantor's pollsters, who missed their numbers by a mile.

I’m beginning to get some evidence from certain doctors and certain scientists that have done research on women’s wombs after they’ve gone through the surgery, and they’ve compared the wombs of women who were on the birth control pill to those who were not on the birth control pill. State Sen. Jim Tracy, R-Shelbyville, (TN) has filed a measure that would require women to undergo a “transabdominal ultrasound” and wait at least 24 hours before going forward with an abortion.
. . . “My wife had three babies, and I’ve had the opportunity to see three ultrasounds,” Tracy said. “It’s pretty amazing to see the ultrasounds.”
Critics say the bill calls for a procedure that could be technically unfeasible. Transabdominal ultrasounds, in which a probe is rubbed across the pregnant woman’s belly, often cannot produce an image of a fetus or detect a heartbeat in the first trimester, when the vast majority of abortions take place.

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor took this don’t­worry-be-happy strategy seriously, and in a heavily promoted “major” speech to the American Enterprise Institute on Tuesday afternoon, he let the sun shine in.

His delivery was forced and, as he read his text, he seemed to be reminding himself to grin. As a result, he scowled for much of the speech and sounded as though he were spitting out his words. Eric Cantor wants to rebrand his Party, and today he pitched a kinder, gentler GOP.
Cantor: "Our goal is to make sure every American has a fair shot to success."
A fair shot to success. I have to admit, I like the sound of that. Come to think of it, that sounds familiar. Where have I heard that before?
Obama: "Well it starts by making sure everyone in America gets a fair shot at success."
A fair shot of success! Of course! That's from the President's famous speech on economic fairness given in Kansas back in 2011. It was a speech that defined his campaign for reelection and his fight for the Middle Class.
Mr. Cantor must have taped that speech because today he hit the same points using the same language, again and again.

OK, now for the really bad news. Anyone looking at these negotiations, especially given Obama’s previous behavior, can’t help but reach one main conclusion: whenever the president says that there’s an issue on which he absolutely, positively won’t give ground, you can count on him, you know, giving way — and soon, too. The idea that you should only make promises and threats you intend to make good on doesn’t seem to be one that this particular president can grasp.
And that means that Republicans will go right from this negotiation into the debt ceiling in the firm belief that Obama can be rolled.

Obama Caves on Taxes
The White House and Senate leaders reached a bipartisan compromise on the fiscal cliff that would allow tax rates to rise on income over $450,000 and delay steep automatic federal spending cuts for two months.
Two months? He sold out his chief campaign promise for a two month delay? How could someone this bad at negotiating get such great deals in the Chicago real estate market?
The deal plays perfectly into Republican hands. Senator Graham admitted on the Senate floor that he considered this deal “Round 1″ and the Debt Ceiling agreement “Round 2.” In other words, get ready for another shakedown to protect the rich at the expense of everyone else. And if it was not clear before, Obama has every intention of screwing those relying on social programs – in fact, he already did so by moving the needle from 250,000 to 450,000. That is a lot of lost revenue to make up for in cuts.

The House did not take up the tax measure today because it did not have sufficient support from our members to pass. Now it is up to the president to work with Senator Reid on legislation to avert the fiscal cliff. The House has already passed legislation to stop all of the January 1 tax rate increases and replace the sequester with responsible spending cuts that will begin to address our nation's crippling debt. At a quarter to 8 p.m. on Thursday night, House Republicans gathered in the Capitol basement for an urgent, closed-door conference meeting. The scene was hushed and confused. Instead of huddling in a windowless room, members thought they’d spend the evening on the House floor, voting on “Plan B,” Speaker John Boehner’s fiscal-cliff proposal. But as they took their seats and looked at Boehner’s face, the reason for the gathering became clear: The speaker didn’t have the votes. The whipping was over. “Plan B” was dead.

Boehner was trying to play chess and the caucus was playing checkers. Boehner is willing to lose a pawn for a queen. I’m not sure about the rest.

Once again Obama's superior negotiating skills, which baffle those who mistake chess for checkers, has revealed to the world the true nature of the GOP: short-sighted, evil, predatory, beholden to the 0.01%.
In the end this was a battle b/t Obama and Boehner, and Boehner lost. Lost BIG! Lost because his own team stabbed him in the back. And all Obama had to do was consider Boehner's proposal for the GOP to reject it. Because the GOP will commit suicide rather than deal honestly with that Black guy in their White House.

I have to say that I didn't think the GOP would screw Boehner like this. That they would be so extreme. I thought they'd opt to preserve the Kabuki drama in which they play the part of an organized, determined, powerful force.
And I'm so relieved that they opened the door for President Obama to walk through, turn around, and say "thank you. Now chained CPI and SS cuts are off the table. Don't mind if I do."

The cliff is upon us. The end of fiscal days, or so House Republicans tell us. The House Republicans want you, the American people to know that they are serious about the fiscal cliff. They are so serious that they have decided to go home for Christmas.

Boehner Shambles: Plan B Fails in House - Tea Party Gloats - Stock Market Falls

House Republicans revolted this evening and rejected Speaker John Boehner’s “Plan B” which would have extended the Bush tax cuts for everyone making $1 million or less, among other provisions. According to Boehner, he canceled a scheduled vote on his plan after it became clear he could not get enough support from Republicans for it to pass. The House is now in recess until after Christmas.

Rep. Tim Huelskamp (R-KS), one of the conservative lawmakers "purged" from a committee seat by House leadership earlier this month, issued a release gloating over the fact that Speaker John Boehner's "Plan B" to avert the so-called fiscal cliff failed on Thursday night due to lack of support.

"On a separate note, Republican leadership thought they could silence conservatives when they kicked us off our Committees," Huelskamp said. "I’m glad that enough of my colleagues refused to back down from the threats and intimidation, thus preventing the Conference from abandoning our principles."

During a fact-finding congressional trip to the Holy Land last summer, Rep. Kevin Yoder (R-Kan.) took off his clothes and jumped into the sea, joining a number of members, their families and GOP staff during a night out in Israel, the sources told POLITICO. Other participants, including the daughter of another congressman, swam fully clothed while some lawmakers partially disrobed. More than 20 people took part in the late-night dip in the sea, according to sources who were participants in the trip.

. . . The Sea of Galilee, a Christian holy site, is where Jesus is said in the Bible to have walked on water.

The FBI looked into whether any inappropriate behavior occurred, but the interviews do not appear to have resulted in any formal allegations of wrongdoing.

But Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), who was the senior most GOP lawmaker in Israel on the trip, was so upset about the antics that he rebuked the 30 lawmakers the morning after the Aug. 18, 2011, incident, saying they were distracting from the mission of the trip.

Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) was also on the privately funded excursion, which means two of the three top Republicans were a part of this trip. Neither Cantor nor McCarthy went swimming that night, the sources said. Some of their staff did.

1. On official duty.
2. Official duty paid for by a private agency but still being paid a government salary.
3. Costs upwards of $10,000.00 per person.
4. If the trip/expenses were not reported on the yearly disclosure forms, expect a visit from the IRS as well.

This could have implications at least for (Ben) Quayle, the son of the former vice president. Ben Quayle has significant primary opposition for his Arizona seat from Dave Schweikert, a tea party-backed candidate.

Ben Quayle is still an embarrassment to AZ and our country. It's not bad enough he was a founder of an adult website disparaging women, but now mocking the Congressional seat. Who paid for this trip? I'm sure we did. How much did it cost us?
What else can he do? Hopefully he will not be elected this year and just fade into the sunset.
