The Trashing of Malheur by Bundy Militia

When the Occupation at Malheur Wildlife Refuge was ongoing in eastern Oregon, many watching it unfold speculated that the Bundy Militia were trashing the place. One clue was an interesting video by David Fry, the last holdout. He did a walk-through of one of the Refuge buildings that showed clothing dumped on the floor, rooms in disarray, and an overall sense of chaos after most of the Occupiers fled rather than face the FBI.

From The Oregonian
He (Fry) passed sleeping bags and sheets hanging off beds, and bags gaping open with clothes spilling onto the floor.
The 27-year-old from Cincinnati filmed the shoes, ice chests, garbage and empty cardboard boxes strewn about, and the notebooks and phones left open on beds. Two half-full bottles of liquor sat on a closet shelf as the camera quickly panned the room.
"They didn't even pack their things," says Fry, who has regularly posted video updates from the refuge in the final week of the occupation.
"Thought feds were coming to kill everyone," he wrote in the video's caption, "Waco style."

And earlier there was the now-infamous video of LaVoy Finicum and others prowling through boxes of Burns Paiute artifacts complaining that they were dumped in a storage room where he also found "mouse droppings." Perhaps they were not kept in pristine condition, but they were also not supposed to be handled by the public, and especially not by the Bundy Militia. I hope the police investigation takes an inventory to make sure nothing was stolen or sold by the Bundy Boys and their minions.

In response to Finicum's video, the Burns Paiute issued a statement saying the artifacts were kept "under lock and key" and therefore should not have been tampered with by Finicum.
In response to Finnicum’s accusations of poor storage and treatment of the tribe’s cultural patrimony, Megan Nagle, U.S. Fish and Wildlife spokesperson released this statement to ICTMN:

“We are confident these artifacts entrusted to the Refuge are cared for with dignity and respect.

With the full knowledge and blessing of the Burns Paiute tribe, the Refuge is home to a number of artifacts that have been found on the Refuge during studies carried out to learn more about the history and use of the lands by their ancestors. These artifacts have been curated and stored under lock and key, until the illegal occupants violated the security of the Refuge.

Additionally, there are other artifacts that have been turned over to the Refuge by third parties. Those items were waiting for the discussions to be held between the tribe and the Refuge as to how they should be re-homed. These items were also under lock and key.

For the individuals who have broken into the secure facilities at the Refuge to portray themselves and their actions as anything other than the violation it is, is simply another fabrication.”

The Militia was also seen building a road with a bulldozer on the Refuge, which is sacred ground to the Paiute tribe:

From Guardian UK:
“I feel disrespected that they’re even out there,” said Jarvis Kennedy, the tribal council’s sergeant-at-arms. Kennedy said he was too upset to watch all of Finicum’s video. “It’s like me going through their drawers at their house.”
Tribe leaders and federal officials say the refuge stores confidential documents and thousands of historic artifacts, such as baskets, spears, tools and beads. The refuge is also home to Paiute burial grounds, making the militia’s recent decision to pave a road through the refuge particularly alarming.
“I could go to the Bundys where his grandparents are buried,” Kennedy said. “How would they feel if I drove over their grave and went through their heirlooms?”

So Finicum complained in the video of mice droppings on the artifacts, and the Militia members made a big whooping deal over "cleaning" out the storage areas at Malheur to "improve" the place:

Now Finicum is dead after an encounter with law enforcement, and the rest of the Bundy-ites are sitting in jail in Portland. But according to a court document from the FBI they left behind a legacy of human waste.

That's right - a big pile of poop.

The FBI Evidence Response Team (ERT) began processing crime scenes at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) on February 13, 2016. The government estimates that it will take 21 days for ERT to complete this work. The government’s estimate is subject to change. There are approximately 24structures at the site that must be processed. Tactical teams responsible for initially securing the refuge reported significant amounts of human feces in and around an outdoor camping area. They also reported that living quarters appear to house large food stores that are spoiling. The outdoor camping area is adjacent to or on a particularly sensitivecultural site that may require extensive processing. Occupiers appear to have excavated two large trenches and an improvised road on or adjacent to grounds containing sensitive artifacts. At least one of these trenches contains human feces. The FBI Art Crimes Team (ACT) is processing these sites. Due to the size and nature of the trenches, equipment is being brought to the site to allow ACT to process these sites safely. Finally, firearms and explosive have been found on the site. There are numerous vehicles on the site and the FBI is concerned that vehicles and buildings may be booby trapped.

Fake-Prayer and Guns: Racism the Descendents of Harper Lee's Bob Ewell - Edited and Expanded

 photo AtticusFinch-BobEwell.png

I'm ashamed of white people, and I'm one of them. Sitting in a place of privilege for 300 years in this land we now call the United States, we have taken our place in society for granted. I'm a southerner, but my ancestors never owned slaves - too poor, and merely subsistance farmers who never saw a cotton bale. When people talk about black food, that's what my ancestors grew up eating too - pinto beans with bacon, collards, cornbread, and sweet potato pie.

The reality is that most white southerners had nothing to do with elite plantation owners, but unfortunately the idiots calling for secession and romanticizing the Confederacy believe they ARE the elite now. They are the elite white-trash Middle Class who are better than the rest, especially people of color.

Harper Lee, author of To Kill a Mockingbird, had it right when she made Bob Ewell the villain of her southern gothic story. Bob Ewell is the guy who blamed a black man for everything and expected his white peers to believe him, much like Bob McCulloch, the prosecutor in St. Louis who basically defended white cop Darren Wilson instead of the black victim, Mike Brown.

Bob Ewell is the face of the white southern Tea Party. He's poor white trash but maybe with a college degree. He grew up watching Mod Squad and Room 222 and probably cried during the movie Brian's Song, but he can't recall that black people ever made a dent in his consciousness. All he remembers is the Golden Age of the Whites, when Mom made apple pie, and cities lit up at Christmas Time because white people loved Jesus more. (You know, black people don't celebrate Christmas because they're all Muslims. We don't need no Kwanzaa.)If you make an Archie Bunker joke to him, he will not laugh, but might say Archie actually made some good points, and isn't it a shame everyone is so PC these days?

He's the ancestor of farmers, mill workers, or mechanics, but his family rose to middle class status in the 60s-70s, ironically with color TVs on which to see integrated sports. He drives brand new jeeps and trucks, and thinks he's top of the heap, as good as any millionaire/billionaire. He could be a millionaire if he tried hard enough or went on a game show - Donald Trump has got nothing on him - but as long as he has a riding lawnmower, some happy kids, his church and a gun cabinet full of weapons, he is one badass mofo, and don't you forget it. But please remember to pray with him against the Gay, the Abortion, and the Scary Black Man in the White House.

He and his wife/sisters/cousins may work in fast food or construction and can barely pay their rent, but have been taught for over 50 years that the whites are the elites, while immigrants and blacks have come here to take whatever they have. They are nobody's equal - the blacks, hispanics, asians, etc... are jealous of what they have. Who cares about other cultures? Who cares about other religions? The descendent of Bob Ewell has the correct white culture and the right religion - Christianity because there is no other religion - and he preaches to the choir every day on Facebook. Wherever he lives, that is God's Country, and it will stay white if he and his gun have anything to say about it. If he ever got close to the Imperial President, he would shoot that foreign bastard right between the eyes - and he has a Constitutional Right according to the white Christian Founding Fathers to say that on Facebook.

The gun nuts among the Bob Ewell crowd - and who isn't one these days? - watch the movie of To Kill a Mockingbird and probably love the scene in which Atticus Finch shoots the rabid dog down in the street. Hell yeah! That's what a Southern Man does! Protect the home and hearth and God's Country with his trusty gun. Since none of these yahoos would ever read a book, they don't realize that Atticus is anti-gun and the only smidgen of that left in the movie is when he won't allow his son Jem to have a gun, but of course we do see Jem suddenly adoring his Daddy when the rabid dog comes down the street. Bang! Hell Yeah, say the Bob Ewells. Teach that boy to shoot! And later when the black rape suspect Tom Robinson is shot down, they probably say "Hell Yeah," and think that's the message - a black thug is like a rabid dog. Or perhaps, if they are more subtle, they connect the mentally ill Boo Radley to the rabid dog, since he ain't right in the head, and he was in jail once - or below the jail. And he's kinda creepy, walking around at night and scaring children.

Atticus is not a Cop - he's Justice
The Police are Behind Him
The Rabid Dog is NOT Boo Radley or Tom Robinson

 photo Mockingbirdcap20013.jpg

So to the Bob Ewells of America, the rabid dog represents kids like Trayvon Martin or Mike Brown or Tamir Rice; black grown-ups who seem to be troublemakers like Eric Garner; mentally ill people no one understands, such as Kajieme Powell, shot down because he had a knife - just like Boo Radley. Yes, all of these people were on public property and were shot or killed somehow by vigilantes like George Zimmerman or the police. But once again the Ewell Klan has missed the point.

Harper Lee did not have a racist bone in her body, but she certainly understood the town, the state, and the country in which she lived. She knew how the white trash Ewells viewed anyone "different" whether by color or mental health. She knew that the Ku Klux Klan viewed black people have less than human/ Heck, rabies seems tame to what they believe in. She knew she was writing something that would drive them out of their minds, and it worked for about 40 years, but they've forgotten now.

Let's white-splain to the Ewell descendents right now and be clear - the rabid dog is not about killing blacks or anyone different. Who takes care of the Finch children? A black woman. She's certainly not the rabid dog. In the courthouse, the kids stand up in the segregated balcony and Atticus doesn't seem to mind. They even go to a black church now and then. We know what Bob Ewell says about Atticus Finch - that he's a N*****-Lover.

 photo 8c322ddb-9ce4-46c8-8d2b-ec0db5cad5e0.jpg

So what does the rabid dog mean? After all the name of the book isn't "To Kill the Rabid Dog." Right - the main symbol in To Kill a Mockingbird is, of course, the Mockingbird. It's the innocent creature who sings all day and does no harm, like Tom Robinson helping Mayella Ewell because he felt sorry for her, or Boo Radley leaving gifts for the Finch children. It's very much like the innocent kids - Scout, Jem and Dill - and even Atticus himself, who just wants to get along with everyone.

So who, pray tell, is the rabid dog? It may come as a shock, but it's Bob Ewell, of course. Atticus faces the dog to save his children and everybody else in town. Then after the trial, Bob Ewell gets drunk and comes after Jem in the car outside Tom Robinson's house, and Atticus faces him in the road - pretty strong parallel symbolism. It's important that Tom Robinson is also a father, and his now-fatherless chidlren are there too - living next door to Bob Ewell, who is a father's nightmare, abusing his own children and anyone else's.

Atticus stands between Bob Ewell and the Robinson family - as the police and courts are supposed to stand up for justice, but often do the opposite, as we have daily proof in Ferguson, Cleveland, and New York.

At the end of the story, Bob Ewell comes after Jem and Scout on Halloween - much like Voldemort in the Harry Potter series, probably by design - J.K. Rowling knows her literature. And as he tries to kill the kids, who steps in to protect the kids? Boo Radley. Boo protects the children against danger, then takes the children home to their father. It is just like Atticus killing the rabid dog in the street - Bob Ewell is the rabid dog, not Boo.

Hey, Boo.

 photo to-kill-a-mocking-bird.jpg

But the descendents of Bob Ewell don't get it.

When the recent protests grew heated in Ferguson, Missouri, over the death of Mike Brown, the white people on my Facebook - those I grew up with in our integrated high school - suddenly became sociologists, blaming bad parenting, the high divorce rate, lack of respect for authority, the terrible public schools where they don't pray enough, or merely the color of their skin. They want to justify shooting someone down like a dog in the street based on their upbringing. They want to impose the death penalty on anyone selling cigarellos in the street, or merely walking around eating candy and talking on the phone.

All of this made something finally snap in me. I'm ashamed of white people and what they write on the internet. I despise my own race, even though I was born this way and have no control over my race, like everyone else. But it's really sad I cannot stand how white I am.

I have spent the last two weeks blocking or muting racists, even those mostly closet racists I grew up with, on Facebook. Of course, those same people on Facebook hate President Obama. I've been blocking anyone who posts something about the "Imperial President" too, and it has been a pleasure. I put up with all this much too long, and enough is enough.

What makes it even worse is that these same Ewell-ish people judging Mike Brown and his protestors in the streets of Ferguson may have had a rough upbringing themselves, suffered through public schools, may be divorced themselves, may have mentally ill relatives or a family member in jail, and may have never respected authority in their lives - hello, Libertarians - but none of that stops them from spouting off when the shooter is a white cop and the victim is black. Hypocrisy is no barrier when white folks start blaming black folks. No matter what, the white Bob Ewells close ranks and get all self-righteous. They never pause and reflect, even while asking for prayer every single day on Facebook.

Harper Lee had something else right - "There's only one kind of folks - folks." Yet the latter-day Ewells think democracy is only for the whites, and the rule of law is only to protect them. They could not care less about the rights of Mike Brown or Eric Garner or the rest.

I thought my white peers learned the same lessons I did growing up in the civil rights era, but they missed their history lessons along with literature and empathy lessons. My family was poor white trash too - we lived in a hand-built concrete house - but we didn't think we were better than anyone. Sadly, some white people do feel they are still the "elite" even if they live in a trailer park and work at Chick-Fil-A for minimum wage - at least they aren't on welfare, right? Except often they are. In fact, white people are the majority on welfare in most states, but no one on Facebook ever admits that.

People who take up for the white police even in the face of video evidence, as with Tamir Rice or Eric Garner, would say they are not racists at all, merely realists because crime is worse in the black community, and why shouldn't people be scared of "thugs?" They believe in the rule of law - even white libertarians who don't want any laws at all. One guy I know, who usually peppers his Facebook posts with prayer requests and anti-tax screeds, suddenly started posting picture after picture of his gun collection on the night of the Ferguson decision. If that is how he views a black protest against injustice, I never want to see his smiling white mayonnaise face again. Just another well-dressed, well-educated, fake-praying Bob Ewell.

White people always blame gangs who live "over there" in some other community or the "wrong side" of town. Yes, I know that gangs exist, and there are shootings in my own city. I see that. But there are white people who also shoot both white and black people. I have had lily-white neighbors shooting their rifles right behind my house, and hunting in the woods 100 yards from my neighborhood. But like most of my neighbors, I can't call the police or he might shoot my dog or one of my kids. That's the reality I live with every day in white-trash post-Bob Ewell 'merica. Eventually these gun-hoarding ammo-sexuals are going to justify killing other whites too, because we have different views or we don't like guns. They certainly talk about it on Twitter often enough. Then it really will be another Civil War.

Atticus was right that "courage isn't a man with a gun in his hand," but that's the conventional white wisdom now. And if they believe that Mike Brown tried to take a gun from a cop, well, by God, he got what he deserved. Like Bob Ewell and the all-white Jury in To Kill a Mockingbird, modern white-trash folks count on their Facebook peers to give them a high five on their racist views.

When GOP operative Elizabeth Lauten recently slammed the Obama family on Thanksgiving, slut-shaming the Obama girls while pompously pretending to give them advice on "being classy," she counted on the echo chamber to back her up. Instead, she forgot that her account was public, that not everyone who followed her account as a racist. After black twitter lambasted her, along with hundreds of tweets from non-racist whites like me, she had to resign from her job. We found out that she was a modern version of Mayella Ewell, daughter of Bob Ewell: blaming anyone black for "disrespect" in order to suit her purposes.

Luckily for all of us, her racist screed backfired on her, and really it always does. Karma bites. If you're Chris McDaniel in Mississippi, you slam black voters and lose elections. If you're Bob McCulloch, the Justice Department is going to investigate your ass. Someday, my gun-crazy neighbor will shoot himself in the foot and not mind at all if a black cop shows up at his door to help him.

Ferguson and the Blame Obama meme have changed many people forever - including me. I will probably end up with no friends on Facebook, and no more wedding invitations from my Ewell-ish relatives. But at least my soul, dignity, and empathy will be intact. Bob Ewell may have been my ancestor too, but I don't have to carry on his hateful tradition.

The white people I've blocked are still living in the Fox News bubble, reading Right-Wing blogs, praying away the blacks and gays, and blaming the black Imperial President for everything! This afternoon they will stop on the way home from work to buy more guns on their way to church where they will pray for the death of Barack Obama. Unfortunately, Bob Ewell has a gene-pool that just keeps on giving.

Anchorage police release the report on #PalinBrawl. Read it below and let the jokes begin!

Via Talking Points Memo
Anchorage Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Castro told the Alaska Dispatch News that prosecutors had decided not to pursue a case following the police investigation.
On Thusday, TPM obtained a copy of the report compiled by the Anchorage Police Department that contained summaries of interviews with witnesses about the Sept. 6 incident at a house party in Anchorage.

Palin Brawl Police Report

From Alaska Dispatch News
Daily described Bristol Palin as “heavily intoxicated and upset.” She told Daily that Klingenmeyer had pushed her to the ground and dragged her across the lawn after she had attempted to confront a woman about hitting her younger sister, Willow. Bristol said she was beginning to leave when she saw her brother attacked. She told Daily she “didn’t have any clue” whether she hit Klingenmeyer or not.
Klingenmeyer told Daily he was “angry that the Palins had showed up and were causing the problems,” and that he was considering filing charges but he later told another officer that he had changed his mind.
The Anchorage municipal prosecutor’s office will not be proceeding with charges in the case, according to Anchorage Police Department spokesperson Jennifer Castro.

You really have to read the full report for added lulz: "Korey told her that he wasn’t going to have any of that here and told her to go home. She then told him that he doesn’t own this place and that she will kick his ass.”

Also, the police report pretty much confirms there's video out there somewhere. More than one person claimed there was video, but when the police followed up a few days later the homeowner said no one he spoke to had video. Makes sense. Palin Family Involved in White Trash Brawl

This "event" has come to be known in Twitter circles by the hashtag #PalinBrawl. See the above link for three different versions of how the smackdown evolved into a brawl.

Sarah Palin has decided to defend her wayward daughter Bristol, who was last seen kicking someone's ass on the fateful night, which also happened to be her father Todd's 50th birthday.

From Sarah's Facebook Page:
Sarah Palin
September 19 at 1:25pm ·

I love my Bristol! My straight-shooter is one of the strongest young women you'll ever meet. I have to say this as a proud mama: right up there with their work ethic and heart for those less fortunate, my kids' defense of family makes my heart soar! As you can imagine, they and my extended family have experienced so many things (liberal media-driven) that may have crushed others without a strong foundation of faith, and I'm thankful for our friends' prayer shield that surrounds them, allowing faith to remain their anchor. Thank you, prayer warriors! I love you!

- Sarah Palin

This comes after new eyewitnesses spoke about Bristol's role in the family brawl.

Via Talking Points Memo
"It was just so shocking," Roberta Thompson told TPM.
She mostly confirmed what her husband told multiple news outlets last week, saying that the two of them were right next to each other during the incident. But she provided her own take on how the events unfolded, including a portion that she said involved the eldest Palin daughter, Bristol Palin, and the owner of the house, Korey Klingenmeyer.

"What I saw was two girls run past and run towards Korey," Roberta Thompson said. "And then I just saw Bristol Palin start punching him in the face."
"It was quite, quite violent," she added.

She said Klingenmeyer was clearly upset about what was happening but maintained his composure.
"She kept punching him and then he just said, you know, 'You need to go,'" Thompson said.

Palin Family Involved in White-Trash Brawl ~ with Multiple Versions

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The hashtag #PalinBrawl came forth this weekend to describe a free-for-all with fisticuffs in Alaska during which police were called to deal with a rowdy hillbilly family - the Palins, of course. It's almost the perfect Palin story. And there are multiple versions, each Palin-licious!
Here's the original widely-published account:
Sarah Palin and her family were at the center of a lively party last weekend that erupted into a fight, with daughter Bristol Palin allegedly throwing a right hook, a man who says he was a guest at the party told ABC News.
“She was punching him [another man] in the face like six times; it was an assault if I’ve ever seen one,” Eric Thompson said, adding that he was among 70 guests at the birthday party in Anchorage Saturday.
“It wasn’t a light punch either. She was really hitting him. I’m surprised he just sat there and took it.”
Political blogger Amanda Coyne reported that Sarah Palin, along with husband Todd and kids Bristol, Willow and Track, arrived in a stretch Hummer and that the fighting started as the beer started flowing.
. . . “I heard Sarah Palin yell do you know who I am? All of us could not believe it. We thought we were watching an episode of Jerry Springer,” he added.
~ ABC News: Palin Family in House Party Brawl
The Palins were quick to supply their own version of events:
But according to the Palin family’s version of events, the instigator was actually the former boyfriend.
The initial tussle occurred, the source said, after the young man in question “tried to get in” to the Hummer limousine after he’d engaged in some unspecified “questionable behavior.”
Track Palin soon found himself struggling to fend off four men who had “piled on him,” according to the source.
Todd Palin then inserted himself into the brawl, which left the former “First Dude” of Alaska bleeding.
. . . According to the source, as her husband and son were trading blows with their adversaries, Palin was yelling (in reference to her son), “Don’t you know who he is? He’s a vet!”
. . . “From my understanding, she was in full ‘mama grizzly’ mode defending the kids,” the source said of Sarah Palin’s mindset.
~ RealClearPolitics Version from "Source" close to family
But my favorite version is from Mudflats Blog, which is correct about the Palins 99% of the time:
The Palins arrived at the party, but not just Sarah and Todd who were the only actual invitees from the clan – the whole fan-damnily and some other tagalong friends from Wasilla turned up in a stretch Hummer limo. Because, of course they did. The party was an adult and relaxed event, with most guests at least in their 30s. Reports have come in that Track got into a fight with an ex-boyfriend of Willow’s. But according to my source, the initial fight started when Track and his buddy were aggressively pursuing… how shall I put this… “romantic relations” with some female guests. They were allegedly explicit and crude in their depictions of what they’d like to do with and to the ladies, expressing a desire to “bend them over on the lawn,” according to my source. Apparently the lawn was large enough to include places one could be “bent over.”
. . . Track did not fare well in the ensuing confrontation with the spouse. The irate husband punched Track with the full force of his annoyance, and the young Palin ended up “spread eagle lying on the grass.” You could say someone did end up bent over on the lawn, but not in the way he first envisioned.
. . . Then Sarah shrieked, “Don’t you know who I am?” and other such things making clear the importance of the Palins, and the lack of importance of the non-Palins to whom she was speaking. She then apparently tried to fling herself on top of the giant dog pile into the middle of the melée.
A Virginia Jury came back with a verdict in the case of Ex-Gov Bob McDonnell and his wife Maureen. Guilty! And this works out well, since Bob McDonnell's defense was that he and Maureen were estranged anyway. Now they can have separate jails.
From Business Insider
McDonnell was widely considered a possible running mate for presidential candidate Mitt Romney in 2012. He was charged with doing favors for a wealthy vitamin executive in exchange for more than $165,000 in gifts and loans. The 14 counts stemmed from their acceptance of gifts, luxury vacations, and large loans from Jonnie Williams Sr., then-CEO of Star Scientific.
. . . Both Bob and Maureen bowed heads and wept as a chorus of “guiltys” kept coming from court clerk. Bob McDonnell was found guilty on counts 1-11. His wife was found guilty on counts 1-3, 5-8, 10, and 14.
From the Washington Post
RICHMOND — A federal jury on Thursday found former Virginia governor Robert F. McDonnell and his wife, Maureen, guilty of public corruption — sending an emphatic message that they believed the couple sold the office once occupied by Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson to a free-spending Richmond businessman for golf outings, lavish vacations and $120,000 in sweetheart loans.
. . . The verdict means that Robert McDonnell, the first governor in Virginia history to be charged with a crime, now holds an even more unwanted distinction — the first to be convicted of one.
He and his wife face decades in federal prison, although their actual sentences are likely to fall well short of that. U.S. District Judge James R. Spencer set a sentencing hearing for Jan. 6.
The Ex-Governor of Virginia, Bob McDonnell is letting his estranged wife take the blame for their downfall. He testified last week to looking the other way and just not noticing that his family was taking expensive gifts from health-food guru Jonnie Williams. In effect, he is throwing his wife completely under the bus like the coward he is.
So after Labor Day there should be a verdict. Stay tuned. :)
McDonnell has been accused of taking more than $165,000 in gifts and loans from businessman Jonnie Williams in exchange for government assistance promoting a health food product made from tobacco. A coterie of aides and political consultants helped the McDonnells project the image of the perfect family: Governor, Boy Scout, former Redskins cheerleader mom, five children, values up the kazoo. Behind the scenes, it was more like the Home Shopping Network. Emails reveal Maureen McDonnell lobbying Williams for an inaugural dress, eventually spending $17,000 of his money on a shopping spree in New York to cover her inaugural wardrobe and sundry other events befitting the first lady of Virginia.
. . . Maureen McDonnell may have signed off on the legal strategy. But the strained look on her face as she enters the courtroom, and the reporting on how she and her estranged husband never exchange even so much as a glance, suggest she didn’t know how awful the trial would get—that whitewashing his behavior would mean blackening hers and turning them both into objects of ridicule, not sympathy.
(Daughter) Jeanine McDonnell said her parents rarely spoke to each other in private, going back decades. She also said her mother developed an unusually close friendship with Williams.
Part of the McDonnells' defense is that they could not have engaged in a criminal conspiracy because they barely talked to each other. Maureen McDonnell's lawyer also said during opening statements last month that the former first lady had a crush on Williams, who "duped" her into thinking he cared for her.
While the attorney, William A. Burck, did not label Williams her "lover" or say the two had an affair, he did say that most people would call their relationship "inappropriate."
. . . "I think she had a mild obsession with Jonnie," she testified.
From Politico
. . . McDonnell laid out the painful details of his marriage, step by step, sounding by turns earnest and devastated.
When he said he scolded her, during his days as Virginia attorney general, for using a campaign list to help promote her “nutraceutical” products — dietary supplements that are supposed to provide health benefits — he was clearly depicting himself as the ethical one in the relationship. But he also tried to sound like the understanding husband: “I knew she was upset about that. It was her job. It was what she was good at.”
. . . Unfortunately for McDonnell, he didn’t always hit the perfect notes when talking about the money his family received from Jonnie Williams, the businessman to whom the couple allegedly traded favors for gifts and loans.
(Prosecutor Michael) Dry ... asked McDonnell why he didn't disclose thousands of dollars worth of golf trips, clubs and accessories. Last week, McDonnell said they weren't reported because of a breakdown in the system that the staff uses to track gifts but he reiterated Monday that it was ultimately his fault the gifts weren't reported.
The judge ended today's (Aug. 25) testimony by asking Dry if he was close to being finished and Dry said he was not. The judge then looked at the jury and said, "Maybe it's just me, but does this feel like the longest day of your life?"
From Richmond Times-Dispatch
Maureen McDonnell’s chief of staff depicted the former first lady Wednesday as a screaming “nutbag” in search of a designer handbag and an emotional rescue.
. . . Mary-Shea Sutherland’s testimony on day eight of the McDonnells’ federal corruption trial portrayed a frustrated first lady placated by Jonnie R. Williams Sr., a free-spending dietary-supplement impresario, then CEO of Star Scientific.
Sutherland depicted Maureen McDonnell as so undone by her privileged surroundings and financial limitations that the first lady grabbed at gifts, raged at staff, and even falsely accused the Executive Mansion chef of trying to ruin her Christmas by serving “bad shrimp.”
The tawdry testimony led some courtroom spectators to roll their eyes, shake their heads and snicker in disbelief.
