Jeb Bush and the Big Gun Meme

I'm sure Jeb Bush thought it would help his failing primary campaign to pander to gun nuts in South Carolina and Nevada when he posted a tweet of a big gun with his name stamped on it in gold letters and the word "America."



And the Twitterverse plus news media gave him what he deserved for such a tone-deaf and ridiculous tweet. What was he expecting? Why would any real Presidential Candidate want the world to think of America as one big gun fight, even if that is the GOP-Doomsday Prepper-Sovereign Citizen-NRA fantasy?

Steve King (R-Iowa) Defends Akin
King says he didn't want to give his thoughts on Akin's comment because he wasn't sure of the context of the remark. He did, however, say he supports Akin's character.
"Todd Akin is a strong Christian man, with a wonderful family," King said.

King says, instead of focusing on one phrase, and turning it into a national issue, voters should focus on the big picture.
"I think this election should be about, how did Todd Akin vote and what did he vote for and what did he stand for and in this case, I'm seeing the same thing, petty personal attacks substituting for strong policy," he said.
King supports the "No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act." It would ban Federal funding of abortions except in cases of forcible rape. Right now, Medicaid also covers abortions for victims of statutory rape or incest - for example, a 12 year old who gets pregnant. Congressman King says he's not aware of any young victims like that.

"Well I just haven't heard of that being a circumstance that's been brought to me in any personal way, and I'd be open to discussion about that subject matter," he said.

If Todd wants to stay in the race, I will continue to support him. I think his comments were indefensible. I think they were inappropriate. He’s acknowledged as such. But you know, when others have made mistakes, you haven’t seen the entire Republican establishment abandon him. I think it’s somewhat suspect.

Congressman Akin’s comments were totally inexcusable. What he said is just flat wrong in addition to being wildly offensive to any victim of sexual abuse. Although Rep. Akin has apologized, I believe he should take time with his family to consider whether this statement will prevent him from effectively representing our party in this critical election.

Akin has backed off from his remarks, albeit with the politician’s excuse of “misspeaking.” People who make such remarks on television are typically capable of making more like them, or rather incapable of exercising the judgment to refrain. We suspect that this same lack of judgment will cause Akin to blow past tomorrow evening’s deadline for him to leave the race and allow the Republicans to select a better nominee. We hope the congressman, who surely wants to see a Senate with as much conservative strength as possible next year, will prove us wrong.

I’m assuming this guy has yet to crack a medical text written after the invention of papyrus, which is a shame, considering that the above “medical” “theory” is one of his arguments against legalizing abortion. I find it reassuring that with all the socio-economically pressing issues that affect the general population, there are still politicians who find the time to focus all their energy on legislating their personal beliefs and oppressing women — or as I like to call them, superheroes of multi-tasking!

Akin has more deep thoughts than Jack Handey, as he went on to share, “but let’s assume that maybe [auto-eject enabled by the uteran rape alarm] didn’t work or something. I think there should be some punishment, but the punishment ought to be on the rapist and not attacking the child.” Funny how the only person missing from that statement is the woman herself. She’s probably somewhere in the kitchen, being seen and not heard. I hope she bakes some cookies while she’s back there (and makes it snappy!).

In case you were wondering, Akin also opposes criminalizing marital rape (which finally made its way around to all 50 states no sooner than 1993), because he believes it gives women a legal tool to “beat up on the husband” in divorce proceedings. Because that, clearly, is the biggest issue in a divorce that involves marital rape. Won’t someone think of the children? Oh right, a woman’s uterus can tell when husband-sex is unwanted and shuts “that whole thing” down, right? The amount of time this guy is prepared to put into legislating my vagina is making me want to learn another language while teaching myself how to play the violin on a mountain climbing expedition.

Conservatives worry that women will lie about having been raped in order to get an abortion, because apparently we’re all just lining up to get our jollies by having our wombs vacuumed. There’s nothing like that week of pain and nausea, we’ll lie and cheat our way to get our fix! In fact, conservatives seem to spend an awful lot of time worrying about what women do with their lady-bits, and even more energy trying to legislate lady-bits, or else coming up with brilliant wisps of reasoning, like Todd Akin, as to why their efforts are justified. There are various theories as to when an abortion might be acceptable, and when it isn’t.

No. Just no. Why are we making up rules about when it is and is not okay to get an abortion, when the issue at hand is whether or not a woman has jurisdiction over her own body — the body she gestates a child with, the body that she sacrifices and has torn asunder in order to grow life? Anyone willing to have their uterus vacuumed rather than bear a child should probably avoid raising one. As someone sacrificing her physical, psychological and spiritual self, a woman is the only person visionary enough to decide how much of her own life she can pump into another.

Akin must go…now. I am willing to give leeway to candidates saying dumb things once in a while, things that are a slip of the tongue, or a simple misunderstanding. This is none of those. The video of this is worse than the quote. It shows a man that is clueless beyond all measure, and shouldn’t be voted in as a local dog catcher, let along as a U.S. Senator.
It is time for the GOP and the conservatives of America to stand up and replace this man, because he is not fit to be a member of the U.S. Senate.

I understand that his comments could be considered offensive to victims of legitimate rape, or even feminists, but the majority of women in Missouri share Akin’s views on rape and abortion, and even though he now says he misspoke (clearly to avoid the PC backlash) actual women voters are not going abandon him. If this were California, or New York, getting 5% of the female vote would definitely hurt. But we are talking about Tea Party Missouri, and the women there weren’t burning bras in the 60s. They aren’t so much concerned about “equality” because they know better and they don’t fall for every media claptrap trend they see. Most importantly, like Akin, they know the difference between forcible rape and just rape, and how it’s just language designed to legalize abortion.
I wish Akin hadn’t claimed he misspoke, because this was what they call a teachable moment. The majority of women votes he loses over this will be negligible. Possibly some rape victims in Missouri, but statistically, most rapes occur in poorer, minority areas that aren’t likely to vote Republican anyway. Maybe a few hundred are enraged enough to actually vote this year, but I’ll bet thousands more women learn of Akin’s stance on abortion because of this story, which brings them to the polls, too.

Akin won the primary. Replacing him in a smoke-filled backroom deal is going to throw away all the campaigning Akin has done from the primary to now, as well as the momentum he has.
I’d suggest that the “throw him overboard!” crowd need to grow some patience and see whether the polling of likely voters shows this to be a problem.

Nothing inarticulate or unintelligent about relating what everybody understands makes sense, that when the body undergoes violent trauma, it affects our chemical balances, which in turn affect reproductive conditions.

If you want to fire this guy over a 38 second sound bite, you’re going to fire anyone over anything.
Not standing up for him would signal to the Demonrats that we are pansies who will fold like a cheap suit over any screaming accusation.
Dana Loesch, a woman, said it best when she said Akin failed a sound bite, whereas McCaskill failed us on the economy over six years. McCaskill’s actions are far, far worse.

St. Louis - Congressman Todd Akin just released the following statement regarding his interview on the "Jaco Report" broadcast this morning in St. Louis:

"As a member of Congress, I believe that working to protect the most vulnerable in our society is one of my most important responsibilities, and that includes protecting both the unborn and victims of sexual assault. In reviewing my off-the-cuff remarks, it's clear that I misspoke in this interview and it does not reflect the deep empathy I hold for the thousands of women who are raped and abused every year. Those who perpetrate these crimes are the lowest of the low in our society and their victims will have no stronger advocate in the Senate to help ensure they have the justice they deserve.

"I recognize that abortion, and particularly in the case of rape, is a very emotionally charged issue. But I believe deeply in the protection of all life and I do not believe that harming another innocent victim is the right course of action. I also recognize that there are those who, like my opponent, support abortion and I understand I may not have their support in this election.

"But I also believe that this election is about a wide-range of very important issues, starting with the economy and the type of country we will be leaving our children and grandchildren. We've had 42 straight months of unacceptably high unemployment, trillion dollar deficits, and Democratic leaders in Washington who are focused on growing government, instead of jobs. That is my primary focus in this campaign and while there are those who want to distract from that, knowing they cannot defend the Democrats' failed economic record of the last four years, that will continue to be my focus in the months ahead."
