CPAC 2014 ~ Guns in the Air, Clowns on the Stairs

Oh, CPAC - the Clown Show of my Dreams. The Conservative Political Action Committee. The Annual GOP Meeting at which all the goons let their hair down and try to inspire the unruly troops. Four days of Fabulous Buffoonery. People you won't see there: gays, atheists - who are banned - or many women on the main stage.

There will be hawks and doves, social conservatives who fret about the spread of gay marriage and fiscal conservatives who’d rather move beyond that debate, and all stripes of libertarians. At a panel on “Benghazigate: the ugly truth and coverup” held by a rival conservative conference to CPAC, Ginni Thomas, a conservative activist and wife of Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, asked a panel that included controversial retired General Jerry Boykin if the Obama administration had committed any crimes, in particular, providing material support to terrorists. The panel all responded affirmatively.

Yes, emotion. Such a terrible thing. Particularly in the world of NRA leadership, which is known for its dispassionate, intellectual approach to the gun debate. It doesn’t get more lofty than Wayne LaPierre’s post-Sandy Hook analysis: “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun.”
On Planet NRA, only people who love guns are allowed to act on their emotions. Everybody else, not so much.

Imagine living in a large metropolitan area where lawful firearms ownership is heavily regulated and discouraged. Imagine waking up to a phone call from the police, warning that a terrorist event is occurring outside and ordering you to stay inside your home."
I'm talking, of course, about Boston, where residents were imprisoned behind the locked doors of their homes, a terrorist with bombs and guns just outside. Frightened citizens, sheltered in place, with no means to defend themselves or their families from whatever may come crashing through the door.
How many Bostonians wished they had a gun two weeks ago? How many other Americans now ponder that life-or-death question?
Boston proves it. When brave law enforcement officers did their jobs so courageously, good guys with guns stopped terrorists with guns.

The positions that have been the bulwark of American civilization are now 'the fringe.'
Don't let them! You must in every aspect of your life understand the battle that is before us, because they do. You ask what you can do? Be as passionate as they are about what you love about this country.
Imagine this small minority, and that's what they are, and the big change they've been able to make by taking over popular culture and the media and the educational establishment in particular, colleges and universities. They've gone and infiltrated all these elite institutions.
And they try to tell you how 'wrong' you are, how perverted your idea of America is when you stand for the truth, you stand for tradition, you stand for what this country has been to the world which is a beacon of hope.
Do not let them convince you it is lost! Do not let them convince you to be afraid!
Do not let them force you to cower!
Stand for America! Fight for America!
And we will get America back!!!

That's their answer to criminal violence? Criminalize 100 million law-abiding gun owners in a private transfer? Build a list of all the good people? As if that would somehow make us safe from violent criminals and homicidal maniacs?
That's their answer? Are they insane?
What's the point of registering lawful gun-owners anyway—so newspapers can print those names and addresses for gangs and criminals to access? You know that's happened before! So the list can be hacked by foreign enemies like the Chinese, who recently hacked Pentagon computers? So the list can be handed over to the Mexican government that, oh by the way, they've already requested that list from our government? In the end there are only two reasons for the government to create that list of registered gun owners: to tax them, or to take them.

The tea-party sponsored a panel called “Trump The Race Card: Are You Sick And Tired Of Being Called A Racist When You Know You’re Not One?”
The short answer was provided by this panel, which was run by KCarl Smith, an African American father and grandfather who started the ConservativeMESSENGER in 2009 and who has appeared on the “700 Club” and the “Huckabee Show.”

. . . Frederick Douglass is the key to appealing to “blacks, Latinos, women, young people.” How?
He offers the “answer to the diversity inclusion problem, a way to defeat vile and malicious attacks of the left’s propaganda machine. They call us a racist, we back up…. They want to humiliate us. They want to intimidate us.”

(At this point a man comes in dressed as a revolutionary soldier carrying a giant yellow “Don’t Tread on Me” flag.)

“The word conservative,” Smith explains, “the word ‘Republican,’ the word ‘U.S. Constitution,’ those words have a negative connotation in this country. We’re losing the propaganda battle. You might as well call yourself a racist. Say ‘Frederick Douglass Republican.’ It piques interest. Those who frame the debate win the debate.”
He explains that Douglass was “born below poverty. When you’re born into poverty at least you own your own body.”
Douglass, Smith notes, never slept in a bed until the age of 10. He escaped from slavery at the age of 20. What does that mean?

“Slavemaster-run health care,” Smith says. “Slavemaster entitlements. Douglass was a 47 percenter. Slavemasters were Democrats.”

. . . an audience member from North Carolina, 30-year-old Scott Terry, asked whether Republicans could endorse races remaining separate but equal. After the presenter, K. Carl Smith of Frederick Douglass Republicans, answered by referencing a letter by Frederick Douglass forgiving his former master, the audience member said “For what? For feeding him and housing him?” Several people in the audience cheered and applauded Terry’s outburst.

After the exchange, Terry muttered under his breath, “why can’t we just have segregation?”
ThinkProgress spoke with Terry, who sported a Rick Santorum sticker and attended CPAC with a friend who wore a Confederate Flag-emblazoned t-shirt, about his views after the panel. Terry maintained that white people have been “systematically disenfranchised” by federal legislation.

When asked by ThinkProgress if he’d accept a society where African-Americans were permanently subservient to whites, he said “I’d be fine with that.” He also claimed that African-Americans “should be allowed to vote in Africa,” and that “all the Tea Parties” were concerned with the same racial problems that he was.

At one point, a woman challenged him on the Republican Party’s roots, to which Terry responded, “I didn’t know the legacy of the Republican Party included women correcting men in public.”

He claimed to be a direct descendent of Confederate President Jefferson Davis.

“Martin Luther King was a Marxist!”... “SHUT UP!”... Suffice it to say, there was plenty of screaming until Smith wrangled a microphone and calmed everybody down. Audience members, still piqued, reached the consensus that Brown and Terry were both plants paid by George Soros. “Was that the liberal media?” one elderly woman asked another. “This event ... has been ruined,” said another.

LaPierre's NRA Scary Tales, the Connecticut Effect & Nugent at SOTU

Before I tell you how the NRA and our members are going to Stand And Fight politically and in the courts, let’s acknowledge that all over this country, tens of millions of Americans are already preparing to Stand And Fight to protect their families and homes.
These good Americans are prudently getting ready to protect themselves.
. . . A heinous act of mass murder—either by terrorists or by some psychotic who should have been locked up long ago—will be the pretext to unleash a tsunami of Gun Control.

No wonder Americans are buying guns in record numbers right now, while they still can and before their choice about which firearm is right for their family is taken away forever.

After Hurricane Sandy, we saw the hellish world that the gun prohibitionists see as their utopia. Looters ran wild in south Brooklyn. There was no food, water or electricity. And if you wanted to walk several miles to get supplies, you better get back before dark, or you might not get home at all.

. . . President Obama is leading this country to financial ruin, borrowing over a trillion dollars a year for phony “stimulus” spending and other payoffs for his political cronies. Nobody knows if or when the fiscal collapse will come, but if the country is broke, there likely won’t be enough money to pay for police protection. And the American people know it.

Hurricanes. Tornadoes. Riots. Terrorists. Gangs. Lone criminals. These are perils we are sure to face—not just maybe. It’s not paranoia to buy a gun. It’s survival. It’s responsible behavior, and it’s time we encourage law-abiding Americans to do just that.

. . . To preserve the inalienable, individual human right to keep and bear arms—to withstand the siege that is coming—the NRA is building a four-year communications and resistance movement. The enemies of the Second Amendment will be met with unprecedented defiance, commitment and determination. We will Stand And Fight.

The Connecticut Effect

We have a strong agenda coming up for next year, but of course a lot of that’s going to be delayed as the “Connecticut Effect” has to go through the process. [...] What’s even more telling is the people who don’t like guns pretty much realize that they can’t do a thing unless they talk to us. After Connecticut I had one of the leading Democrats in the legislature—he was with us most of the time, not all the time—he came to me and said, “Bob, I got all these people in my caucus that really want to ban guns and do all this bad stuff, we gotta give them something. How about we close this gun show loophole? Wouldn’t that be good?” And I said, “no, we’re not going to do that.” And so far, nothing’s happened on that.

The remarks by a NRA lobbyist that the organization's efforts would intensify after the "Connecticut effect" subsides are callous and offensive and should be denounced by the NRA. If the NRA believes that Americans are going to forget what happened two months ago this week, it is sorely mistaken. What the NRA doesn't seem to understand is that the so-called "Connecticut effect" is actually 20 children with their whole lives ahead of them taken from us in a matter of seconds - and six courageous educators who simply came to school to help children and, instead, lost their lives trying to protect them. The unimaginable pain their families and the Newtown community and our nation feel will not wear off anytime soon.

. . . Lauderdale, best known for founding the "little orchestra" known as Pink Martini, is the anti-Ted Nugent: A liberal, Occupy-Movement-supporting, openly gay civil rights activist who favors gun control and loves classical music.

. . . there he was, sitting quietly in a corner of a visitor’s gallery on the upper level of the House chamber, a guest of conservative Republican congressman Steve Stockman (R-TX).
. . . Asked about Obama’s remarks, Nugent, best known for his 1970s hit “Cat Scratch Fever,” mimicked a slow yawn before offering his, well, critique.
“Does kiss my ass ring any bells?” drawled the Nuge, who sported a camouflage cowboy hat.
“I’m so excited that someone is going to bring about world peace and save the children,” he quipped.
“And thank God he’s gonna stop global warming, I was starting to get concerned.”
. . . “I’ve heard this predictable flowery feel-good speech of denial before,” Nugent said at one of his many stops in front of the TV cameras.
“It’s a scam, and I think it’s epitomized by his dishonesty in the overt attempt to infringe on our Second Amendment rights” to bear arms.
Nugent was eventually introduced to a reporter from the Voice of America.
The rocker grinned and interrupted: “I’m sorry, I’m the f—ing voice of America!” he boomed.

...Politico reported that Nugent held court with reporters, telling them that Rep. Jim Langevin (D-RI), who was paralyzed in a shooting accident, had “Shit for brains” because he was critical of Nugent’s attendance at the address. He also denied threatening President Obama.
NBC News’ Luke Russert later asked Nugent if he thought that was “an appropriate thing to say about a sitting member of Congress who’s in a wheelchair?”
Nugent, no stranger to feces, responded that it would take “genuine fecal material instead of brain matter” to suggest that he doesn’t “feel sorry for the victims of violent crime.”

Gayle Trotter Says Weak Women Under Attack Need Assault Weapons

Guns make women safer. Using a firearm with a magazine holding more than 10 rounds of ammunition, a woman would have a fighting chance even against multiple attackers.

Young women are speaking out as to why AR-15 weapons are their weapon of choice. The guns are accurate. They have good handling. They’re light. They’re easy for women to hold.

And most importantly, their appearance. An assault weapon in the hands of a young woman defending her babies in her home becomes a defense weapon, and the peace of mind that a woman has as she’s facing three, four, five violent attackers, intruders in her home, with her children screaming in the background, the peace of mind that she has knowing that she has a scary-looking gun gives her more courage when she’s fighting hardened, violent criminals.

And if we ban these types of assault weapons, you are putting women at a great disadvantage, more so than men, because they do not have the same type of physical strength and opportunity to defend themselves in a hand-to-hand struggle. They’re not criminals, they’re moms, they’re young women. And they’re not used to violence confrontations.

The peace of mind that she has, knowing that she has a scary-looking gun, gives her more courage when she’s fighting hardened, violent criminals. If we ban these types of assault weapons, you are putting these types of women at a great disadvantage–more so than men because they don’t have the same type of physical strength and opportunity to defend themselves in a hand-to-hand struggle.

This is the dumbest thing I've heard so far. Ask Ms. Giffords if she would have had time to whip out a AR-15 when she was attacked. Most gun violence happens in a split second, even the police who are the trained professionals have a hard time reacting.

Question: Where in the world do these people live that women are having to single handedly repel multiple attackers to defend their home and children? Have we entered the days of Mad Max and the liberal media is just keeping quiet?
The idea that we are just an AR-15 away from totally anarchy is absurd. And sitting in front of the United Stataes Senate and claiming women need fully automatic weapons to repel the advancing hordes makes you look foolish and diminishes the Pro Gun Rights people who aren't nuts.

Wayne LaPierre - Kids Need Security Blanket of Guns and Guards

My problem with background checks is you’re never going to get criminals to go through universal background checks. Actually...while we're having this hearing, and we certainly don't know the details, but in Phoenix, Arizona, there is another what seems to be possibly a shooting with multiple victims. And it doesn't seem like anybody's been killed, but the initial reports are 3 people injured . . . with multiple shots fired.

The NRA's new shooting game is truly sickening
Let us recap: After the Sandy Hook massacre, the NRA’s Wayne LaPierre deflected blame from the gun lobby onto anyone and anything but firearms. A chief culprit: video games and a “callous, corrupt and corrupting shallow industry that sells and sows violence against its own people.”
Then, exactly one month after 20 children and six adults were cut down by a maniac with an assault rifle, the same NRA released a callous, corrupt and corrupting game for iPhones and iPads.
Players shoot high-powered firearms at coffin-shaped targets. There are red bull’s-eyes where the heads and hearts would be.

This morning I blogged about a new target-shooting app – NRA: Target Practice – that has gotten a ton of media attention because it is advertised as being for ages 4 and up. I suggested that this was, even by NRA standards, so tasteless that it must be a hoax.

Now, fine, you aren't shooting actual people in this game, which could explain why the App Store rating rules deem games like these okay for children who are of pre-school age. But you have to remember that it was a little less than a month ago when NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre said this:
And here's another dirty little truth that the media try their best to conceal: There exists in this country a callous, corrupt and corrupting shadow industry that sells, and sows, violence against its own people.
... And then they have the nerve to call it "entertainment." But is that what it really is? Isn't fantasizing about killing people as away to get your kicks really the filthiest form of pornography

It strikes the right balance of gaming and safety education, allowing you to enjoy the most authentic experience possible.
Now, fine, you could argue that you're just using your sniper rifle to hone those deer-hunting skills. But there are no deer in this game, and the set of targets pictured above do have red areas around the human head and heart, so — well, maybe they're grizzly bears or something. Don't expect the kerfuffle over the game or the organization's perceived hypocrisy to rattle anyone in the NRA, of course: Last month LaPierre had no qualms taking Hollywood down, even though his organization's flagship museum was simultaneously hosting an exhibit showing off famous weaponry in movies.

Are the president's kids more important than yours? Then why is he skeptical about putting armed security in our schools when his kids are protected by armed guards at their school? Mr. Obama demands the wealthy pay their fair share of taxes, but he's just another elitist hypocrite when it comes to a fair share of security.

The answer, they told us, was more guns put in more hands.

You have children that had no say in the decision on whether their father was going to step forward to be President of the United States, to run for President, one of the most bone-crushing, sacrificing things any husband or wife can do to their family. Mika Brzezinski: They are out of step, out of sync, and totally out of the mainstream of our society. And quite frankly, after seeing that I think some of the people who run that thing are sick. I really do. I think they’re sick in the head. I'm serious - I'm embarrassed right now. I'm embarrassed for our country. We have a section of our society—the NRA—which should have a voice certainly, trying to protect a Constitutional Amendment. I understand that. There’s a really legitimate debate there and they just took it and brought it down to the lowest, most base level. Now—it’s fringe. It's fringe.

Joe Scarborough: Their leadership has dragged them over the cliff. They are now a fringe organization with millions of mainstream Americans, gun-hunting - guys and women that love to hunt--

First the combative Wayne LaPierre press conference at the National Press Club. Then LaPierre’s uncompromising appearance on “Meet the Press.” And now this web video. The NRA is acting as if this were 2001 -- after beating Al Gore and facing a cowed Democratic Party. Instead, this is 2013 -- after the NRA was unable to beat Obama and after Democrats expanded their majority in the U.S. Senate.
