GOP Sinks to Historic Lows in Polls

 photo LowestGallupRatingInHistory.png

Looking Bad for the #GOP:

From Gallup:
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- With the Republican-controlled House of Representatives engaged in a tense, government-shuttering budgetary standoff against a Democratic president and Senate, the Republican Party is now viewed favorably by 28% of Americans, down from 38% in September.
This is the lowest favorable rating measured for either party since Gallup began asking this question in 1992.

From NBC News
The Republican Party has been badly damaged in the ongoing government shutdown and debt limit standoff, with a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll finding that a majority of Americans blame the GOP for the shutdown, and with the party’s popularity declining to its lowest level.
By a 22-point margin (53 percent to 31 percent), the public blames the Republican Party more for the shutdown than President Barack Obama – a wider margin of blame for the GOP than the party received during the poll during the last shutdown in 1995-96.
. . .“These numbers lead to one inescapable conclusion: The Republicans are not tone deaf; they are stone deaf.”

Also Looking Bad: Congress

From Public Policy Polling
Hemorrhoids, toenail fungus, dog poop, and cockroaches all might be a little bit gross- but they're all more popular than Congress. Hemorhoids beat out Congress 53/31 with bipartisan support. On the other three there's a partisan split- Republican voters go for Congress while Democrats take the alternative but overall it's a 47/40 victory for dog poop, a 44/41 one for toenail fungus, and a 44/42 triump for cockroaches.

Now the news is not all bad for Congress. It's at least still more popular than serial killers (56/18 over Charles Manson), foreign enemies (51/22 over Syria, 49/28 over Vladimir Putin), and controversial celebrities (46/31 over Miley Cyrus, 42/33 over Honey Boo Boo, and 40/36 over Lindsey Lohan). Democrats at least take Honey Boo Boo and Lindsey Lohan over Congress, but Miley, well she's on her own. Congress also outpolls heroin (53/24), Anthony Weiner (50/23), the Ebola virus (47/28), and twerking (37/33).

Alas the list of things voters like more than Congress is a longer one. Much derided mothers in law (64/20), public radio fundraising drives (60/25), and even Wall Street (46/15) all do better than Congress by at least a 30 point margin. It's also only appropriate for Halloween month that witches (46/32) and zombies (43/37) outpoll Congress as well.

But perhaps the greatest indignity of all indignities...we found in May that Americans absolutely hate hipsters. But give voters a choice? They'll take the hipsters over Congress 42/33. But maybe you knew that, like 2 years ago.

The Donald Defrauded Students at Bogus "Trump University"

 photo DonaldTrumpAngry_zps89707b5d.jpg

From Gawker
According to New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, Trump defrauded at least 5,000 Trump devotees, who paid between $1,495 and $35,000 to enroll in Trump's "educational institute." Those students were under the impression that the cost of tuition would include "individual instruction until they made their first deal," because, well, that's what the program promised.
Instead, they were given a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have their photograph taken in front of a life-size picture of the blustery Golden Retriever.

We're going to have the best of the best. . . . and if you can't learn from them, and you can't learn from me . . . and these are all people handpicked by me, then you're just not going to make it in terms of the world of success.
. . . We're going to teach you better than the business schools can teach you.
~ Donald Trump in a promotion for Trump University

More than 5,000 people across the country who paid Donald Trump $40 million to teach them his hard sell tactics got a hard lesson in bait-and-switch. Mr. Trump used his celebrity status and personally appeared in commercials making false promises to convince people to spend tens of thousands of dollars they couldn’t afford for lessons they never got. No one, no matter how rich or popular they are, has a right to scam hard working New Yorkers. Anyone who does should expect to be held accountable.
~ New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman, who filed suit Saturday against bogus sham “Trump University,”

They meet on Thursday evening - I get sued by this AG Schneiderman... Saturday at one o'clock. Think of it. What government in the history of this country has ever brought a suit on Saturday? I never heard of such a thing.
...They obviously did it very quickly, but probably Obama - maybe this is a mini IRS. Maybe we have to get the tea party after these people, because this could very well be a mini IRS.
~ Donald Trump on whether Obama gave Schneiderman the idea for the investigation

The president and I have much more important stuff to talk about that Donald Trump. I've never discussed Donald Trump with the president.
~ Schneiderman in response to Trump's accusation

Maine Wingnut Calls IRS the "Gestapo"

Photobucket

This decision has made America less free. We the people have been told there is no choice. You must buy health insurance or pay the new Gestapo -- the IRS.
Perhaps what is most disturbing about this ruling, though, is that the federal mandate is considered a TAX. Now that Congress can use the taxation power of the federal government to compel behavior or lack thereof, what’s next? More taxes if we don’t drive Toyota Priuses or if we eat too much junk food or maybe even pea soup?
~ Maine Governor Paul LePage in his weekly radio program, comparing the IRS to the Gestapo, and therefore President Obama to Hitler ~ From the Maine Sunday Telegram

I demand a full apology on behalf of all those who suffered at the hands of the real Gestapo.
~ Maine Democratic Party Chairman Ben Grant

Methinks the Dems protest too much. LePage may have violated the so-called "Godwin's Law" that prohibits Nazi analogies when criticizing an opponent. But you don't have to go far to find Democrats being equally hyperbolic about Republicans.
LePage should apologize when the Democrats do it.
~ Rick Moran in American Thinker

Perhaps he should forgo his taxpayer paid health insurance.
~ comment by Rick Smith of Willamette University on TPM

So the despot in chief is whining again. How's that assistant chef's job at the governor's mansion you got your daughter? You know, the one that pays her $41k a year plus benefits. Or your brother-in-law you hired with a salary of over $68k per year.
When you stop hiring family and win greater than 50% (hell winning 40% would have been an improvement) of the votes, come back and talk to us about anything. Til then, STFU.
~ comment by Lee Bess Toad on TPM

Maine voters regret electing Repubican Paul LePage Governor and would choose Independent Eliot Cutler if they could do the 2010 election over again, a new poll from Public Policy Polling finds. When asked who they would vote for if they could do the election over, 43% of Maine voters chose Eliot Cutler, 35% chose Paul LePage, and 19% chose Democrat Libby Mitchell. LePage suffers from a negative job approval rating, with just 41% of voters approving of his job performance and 52% disapproving.
