The Blue Wave Was Real

Yes indeed, there was a Blue Wave during election 2018 and some of the races are still ongoing. There were some disappoints to be sure: Ted Cruz beat out Dem rock star Beto O'Rourke for senate in Texas; insidious Marsha Blackburn summoned both Trump and Pence to Chattanooga, Tennessee, for a huge last minute rally to help her blast Democratic moderate Phil Bredesen; and somehow racist Steve King hung on in western Iowa while the rest of the state turned solid blue. Due in part to election day chaos, Dems Andrew Gillum and Stacey Abrams are barely hanging onto governor races in Florida and Georgia respectively while recounts and lawsuits are ongoing.

But in spite of those blips, there WAS a Blue Wave. The House of Representatives will now be have Dem Leadership on every committee and they are ready to investigate Trump and all his cronies in depth. TThe Blue Wave was great for women and minorities, sending a diverse group of House newbies to Washington to speak for the people starting in January. Dems have turned nearly every New England state blue from their state legislatures up, with only Republican Senator Collins hanging on in Maine. Some blue states are almost solid blue now, such as California, which ousted many Republicans at every level. And there were wild cards - a seat pickup in Oklahoma, and a vote in Idaho to expand Medicaid.

Trump Attacks McCain's Military Record

 photo Trump-McCain_1.png

So Donald Trump is mouthing off now at people who aren't even running against him! He decided to attack ex-GOP nominee John McCain who last ran for the presidency in 2008 and lost to Barack Obama, saying that McCain wasn't a war hero because he was captured.

This kooky statement might hurt Trump to an extent, considering the outpouring of support for Chattanooga after the murder of five military men. The other GOP candidates now have to decide whether to let it go or stand up for McCain, who is unpopular with the Tea Party and considered an establishment RINO (Republican in Name Only). But of course Jeb and the gang are a bunch of hypocrites no matter what they say because they loved it when John Kerry was attacked by the Swiftboaters back in the day.

Oh how sad, the GOP is in a sticky situation. Make more popcorn!

From Politico
“He’s not a war hero,” said Trump. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”
The remarks, which came after days of back-and-forth between McCain and Trump, were met with scattered boos.
McCain, a former Navy pilot, spent roughly five-and-half years in a notorious North Vietnamese prison known as the “Hanoi Hilton,” where he was repeatedly tortured. He spent two of those years in solitary confinement.
. . . He also continued his attacks on the Arizona senator, saying, “I think John McCain’s done very little for the veterans. I’m very disappointed in John McCain.”

John McCain had this reply:
“It’s very bad,” the Republican senator said. “This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me,” McCain said. “Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.”

Doubling down, Trump refused to apologize for his remarks.

Tripling down, Trump then called McCain a Dummy - you can't make this stuff up!

Jane Curtin Slams Fox News on SNL Anniversary Show

 photo Jane Curtin.png

On the 40th Anniversary of NBC's Saturday Night Live, famed comedian Jane Curtin, one of the original "Not Ready for Prime-Time Players," joined Amy Poehler and Tina Fey for "Weekend Update." And she used a one-liner to completely capture what is wrong with Fox News Network.

“Times have changed since I first sat at this desk. For example, I used to be the only pretty blonde woman to read the fake news. Now there’s an entire network devoted to that. And somehow, I showed less cleavage.”

Fox News is famous for (among other things) hiring blonde women who look and dress more like porn stars than journalists.

President Obama's Epic Ad Lib During State of the Union

 photo B72WzPWIUAAT_t2.jpg

A defiant and proud President Obama gave probably the best one-liner response EVER to GOP hecklers on the night of the State of the Union speech. Call it "shade," a "pwn," a "sick burn," or a "slam-dunk," it was fabulous!

Via Washington Post
"I have no more campaigns to run,” Obama said, to which the Republicans in the audience applauded sarcastically. He came back in the very next beat: “I know, because I won both of them."

Malia Obama: “How is he already writing a book? Sad.”

Bookstore Checker: "They tried to find the saddest photo."

Pres. Obama: "He’s just sad."

Kentucky Zingerfest ~ Alison Grimes Vs. Mitch McConnell at Fancy Farm

 photo alisongrimes.jpg

Senator Mitch McConnell at Kentucky's Fancy Farm Political Forum
  • Over the next 15 months we are going to decide what kind of America we want. … Barack Obama’s vision for America, or Kentucky’s?
  • Before I get started, I want say how nice it is to see Jerry Lundergan back in the game. Like the loyal Democrat he is, he's taking orders from Obama on how to run his daughter's campaign. And he told them to make a pitch for the women's vote and to send a check to Anthony Weiner.
  •  Kentucky’s voice is the voice of opposition to the Obama agenda and I’m proud of that. That’s why every liberal in America is out to beat us next year.
  •  . . .  The liberals are worried because, just as I predicted, Obamacare is a disaster for America. I fought them every step of the way on their government takeover and we stand up to their war on coal. As long as I am in the Senate, Kentucky will have a voice instead of San Francisco and Martha’s Vineyard.

Senate Candidate Alison Lundergan Grimes at Fancy Farm
  •  The GOP has come to stand for gridlock, obstruction, and partisanship. If doctors told Senator McConnell he had a kidney stone, he’d refuse to pass it.
  • Senator McConnell is the most unpopular senator among Democrats but Republicans as well. … There’s a reason he’s so disliked. He sowed the seeds of dysfunction, and after 30 years Senator McConnell is in the center of it. As long as he remains in D.C., D.C. will stand for dysfunctional capitol.
  • It's been a tough month for him. The entire GOP caucus went around him to accomplish filibuster reform.
  •  Now I know Senator McConnell believes I’m not right for the job. But do I really need to apologize for having more government experience than Rand Paul?”
  • (McConnell) has used politics as a carnival game of Whack-A-Mole, but I will tell you that I don't scare easy, and neither does the rest of Kentucky.
  •

I am as much a cheerleader for President Obama as Sen. McConnell is a Chippendale dancer.
~ Alison Grimes in an interview with Howard Fineman for Huff Post

Democratic senate candidate Alison Grimes blew into the Fancy Farm Picnic, stared down Mitch McConnell, and left him looking like a directionless and paranoid old man.
Alison Grimes began by talking about her long name and then said with your help Kentucky in January 2015 you can call me senator. Grimes said that she didn’t have to apologize for having more government experience than Rand Paul. She took a shot at Paul by pointing out that he wasn’t in Kentucky, he was spending his weekend with his loved ones, the tea party in Iowa.
. . . Grimes said that McConnell is disliked by the voters in Kentucky and in the United States. She said McConnell is at the center of the DC dysfunction. The Democrat said after years of McConnell’s leadership the GOP stands for Gridlock Obstruction and Partisanship. She told McConnell to stop. She called out his empty rhetoric on defending Kentucky coal. She called McConnell on his votes against the Violence Against Women Act, and the Fair Pay Act.

Hillary Kicks Butt on Benghazi

Photobucket

Huffington Post
"With all due respect, the fact is we had four dead Americans," Clinton responded, raising her voice at Johnson, who continued to interrupt her. "Was it because of a protest or was it because of guys out for a walk last night who decided to kill some Americans? What difference at this point does it make? It is our job to figure out what happened and do everything we can to prevent it from ever happening again, Senator."
Clinton continued, defending the State Department's efforts in the wake of the assault. "Honestly, I will do my best to answer your questions about this, but the fact is people were trying their best in real time to get to the best information," she said.

From MSNBC
Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., told Clinton that if he were in Obama’s shoes, he would have fired her for what he described as her “culpability for the worst tragedy since 9/11.”

“Had I been president at the time, and I found that you did not read the cables from Benghazi, you did not read the cables from Ambassador Stevens, I would have relieved you of your post,” said Paul during the Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing Wednesday. “I think it’s inexcusable,” he continued.

. . . “Their lives could have been saved had someone been more available, had someone been aware of these things, more on top of the job,” said Paul.

Almost immediately after the hearing, Paul began to face heavy criticism himself for what some viewed as too brash an approach.
“I can’t remember another time during a hearing when a senator referred to himself, ‘If I were president,’” said NBC Capitol Hill correspondent Kelly O’Donnell on Andrea Mitchell Reports Wednesday. “You do hear it on the campaign trail. That is really going beyond what we would normally hear.”

Rand Paul Backtracks on CNN, via Raw Story
CNN’s Wolf Blitzer pointed out that the intelligence failures and casualties involving the invasion of Iraq seemed like a greater blunder.

“Yeah, I agree with you,” Paul said. “There is no comparison to a beginning of a war in Iraq as well as the war in Afghanistan. The tragedy of those wars is of a different scale, and I guess we are talking more about a diplomatic mission than we are talking about a beginning of the war.”

But he insisted Clinton was still culpable for ignoring intelligence reports.

From ABC News
. . . Rep. Joe Wilson, R-S.C., asked why the secretary of state herself did not appear in Rice's place to give those televised explanations to the country.
"Well, I have to confess here in public [that] going on the Sunday shows is not my favorite thing to do. There are other things that I prefer to do on Sunday mornings," Clinton replied. "And I did feel strongly that we had a lot that we had to manage, that I had to respond to. And I thought that should be my priority."

3rd Debate: Horses and Bayonets and Battleships, Oh My!

Photobucket

source: outtame-ontoyou

From ABC News Debate Transcript
ROMNEY: Our Navy is old -- excuse me, our Navy is smaller now than at any time since 1917. The Navy said they needed 313 ships to carry out their mission. We're now at under 285. We're headed down to the low 200s if we go through a sequestration. That's unacceptable to me.

I want to make sure that we have the ships that are required by our Navy. Our Air Force is older and smaller than at any time since it was founded in 1947.

We've changed for the first time since FDR -- since FDR we had the -- we've always had the strategy of saying we could fight in two conflicts at once. Now we're changing to one conflict. Look, this, in my view, is the highest responsibility of the President of the United States, which is to maintain the safety of the American people.

And I will not cut our military budget by a trillion dollars, which is a combination of the budget cuts the president has, as well as the sequestration cuts. That, in my view, is making -- is making our future less certain and less secure.

OBAMA: Bob, I just need to comment on this.

. . . I think Governor Romney maybe hasn't spent enough time looking at how our military works.

You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.

And so the question is not a game of Battleship, where we're counting slips. It's what are our capabilities.
And so when I sit down with the Secretary of the Navy and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, we determine how are we going to be best able to meet all of our defense needs in a way that also keeps faith with our troops, that also makes sure that our veterans have the kind of support that they need when they come home.

And that is not reflected in the kind of budget that you're putting forward because it just doesn't work.

Biden - Ryan Smackdown Review w/Updates

Photobucket

via gifwich

. . . for someone like a Paul Ryan or anybody else up against Joe Biden, when the moderator allowed one candidate to absolutely run roughshod over the conversation, over the opponent. That’s a tough format. It reminded me of watching a musk ox run across the tundra with somebody underfoot. In this case, when it came to style, Paul Ryan was underfoot because of the moderator allowing Biden to do interrupting, to kind of take control of the conversation

The laughter certainly was not something that we expected. On the policy front, I think it was precisely what we expected. I didn't hear any new attacks really. There were a few statistics that were more of a reach than usually, but pretty typical of the vice president in the limited amount that we've seen him in public in the past few months.
There was a lot of incredulity (among Romney-Ryan campaign staffers watching Biden). What is he doing? Why is he doing that? Does he know there's reaction shots? Several times it was just really inappropriate. Several times it seemed like he wasn't listening.
~ Ex-RNC Chairman Michael Steele, quoted by Yahoo News

Biden got the memo about not duplicating President Obama’s listless sleepwalk in Denver, and seems to have read it repeatedly. Aggressive from the get-go, he threw his hands in the air, guffawed as Ryan spoke, interrupted his rival and belittled him (“this guy,” “my friend.”). He flashed his teeth frequently and grinned incessantly.
~ Maggie Haberman on Politico

I don't believe I've ever seen a debate in which one participant was as openly disrespectful of the other as Biden was to Paul Ryan tonight. ...It was openly contemptuous and disrespectful.
~ Chris Wallace of Fox News, via Business Insider

On more than one occasion, the Republican candidate visibly gulped. It's dispiriting, of course, that political discourse should have been reduced to such displays of alpha-male dominance, but there were times when the debate might have benefited from a whispering David Attenborough voiceover: "And so the victorious older male, having bared his cosmetically enhanced teeth, stalks away, muttering: 'With all due respect, that's a bunch of malarkey …'"
. . . Biden is an incorrigible ham. On the split-screen, while Ryan spoke, he could be seen grinning, chuckling, shaking his head, throwing his hands to the skies or hanging his head in exaggerated disbelief, a widely varying sequence of gestures that all amounted to "can you believe this guy?" When the questioning turned to religious faith, Biden simply adopted a completely different voice, husky and several tones lower. With exuberant disingenuousness, he referred to Ryan as "my friend" more than a dozen times. But it all seemed to work. It worked much better, certainly, than Obama's decision to act as if the split-screen wasn't there.
~ Oliver Burkeman on Guardian UK

There is a deeply held Beltway myth of Paul Ryan, Man of Big Ideas, and it dies hard. But, if there is a just god in the universe, on Thursday night, it died a bloody death, was hurled into a pit, doused with quicklime, buried without ceremony, and the ground above it salted and strewn with garlic so that it never rises again. On foreign policy, Ryan occasionally rose, gasping, to the level of obvious neophyte. (He was more lost in Afghanistan than the Russian army ever was.) On domestic policy, his alleged wheelhouse, he was vague, untruthful, and he walked right into a haymaker he should have seen coming from a mile off, when he started bloviating about Biden's role in the "failed" stimulus program, only to have Biden slap him around with Ryan's own requests for stimulus money for his home district back in Wisconsin. He also made it quite clear that a Romney-Ryan White House will do everything it can to eliminate a woman's right to choose. This should make for some fine television commercials over the next few weeks.
~ Charles P. Pierce on Esquire

Alan Schroeder on CNN
. . . two candidates struggle to dominate the conversation -- again, I am reminded of a father and son going at it over the dinner table. The look of feigned incredulity on Biden's face as Ryan speaks is priceless. For his part, Ryan can barely contain his exasperation at being talked over. Biden's line -- "Oh, and now you're Jack Kennedy" -- is a not too subtle allusion to the classic vice presidential debate putdown from 1988, when Lloyd Bentsen told Dan Quayle, "Senator, you're no Jack Kennedy." Ryan attempts to laugh off the insult, but he seems a bit rattled here. Biden appears to have hit a nerve. Shouldn't candidates know by now that it's never safe to invoke John F. Kennedy in a presidential debate?

Stylistically this is one of Ryan's low points in the debate. Unsure how to handle Biden's perturbed tone, Ryan loses his cool. He begins squirming in his chair and moving his neck like a bobblehead doll. At a couple of points he emits a strange, snort-like chuckle, a sound that does not exactly enhance his maturity. For the most part in this debate, Ryan did not let an overbearing Biden get under his skin, but not in this clip.

Let's give Ryan credit where credit is due. Before the debate he predicted that Biden would come at him "like a cannonball," and indeed he did. Though it wasn't always pretty, Biden managed to dominate the evening, an old lion who had no intention of being taken down by the young gun sitting across the table.

Like a master thespian on opening night, Biden conspicuously deployed pretty much his entire bag of performing tricks: dramatic line-readings, huge smiles, exaggerated laughter, asides to the audience. As over-the-top as some of this became, it got the job done. For much of the debate the super-charged veep kept his opponent in a defensive crouch. At times it looked as if Ryan was afraid Biden might ground him and take away the car keys.

(Biden)came across like a guy you meet at a cocktail party or some political event, an obnoxious drunk who’s loud and boisterous and interrupts every conversation… He just is the kind of guy you want to get away from as quickly as you can and go find someone else to talk to. It was just boorish behavior for the first half.

The pearl-clutchers might have the vapors, but Democrats are revived by Biden’s aggressive performance, in contrast with his boss’s listless one.
