Melania Trump Plagiarizes the First Lady - and Rick Astley!

Melania Trump made her speaking debut at the Republican National Convention this week and immediately she drew praise from all sides for her poise and speaking ability. Well-done, Melania!

Then five minutes later, some guy on Twitter realized he had heard her speech before because it contained phrases such as "word as my bond." Was that a coincidence? Well, no. It turns out that Mrs. Trump somehow managed to plagiarize a speech given by Michelle Obama in 2008 that was basically a cut-and-paste job.

The the tweets hit the fan!

Update: There have been several twists and turns so far, but the latest spin is that a ghostwriter from several of Donald Trump's books named Meredith McIver has taken the blame for the fiasco. But that in itself caused more confusion as people tried to find information on Ms. McIver and found little or nothing about her credentials or career. Some don't even believe she is a real person (like Donald's alias, John Barron), so stay tuned.

Bibi Netanyahu Comes to Congress, Tries to Take Over

Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, spoke to the Congress of the United States the other day, urging them to bomb Iran and to stop Obama from seeking diplomatic solutions to problems.

He's a warmonger who wants us to get rid of the Arabs and Persians and only be allies with Israel. He wanted the same thing before the Iraq war, and that didn't work out too well for either the U.S. or the Middle East. So why should we listen to him now?

CNN's chief international correspondent dubbed Netanyahu's performance on Capitol Hill "a very dark Strangelovian speech" while Fox News flattered the Israeli prime minister. But the most amusing commentary – and likely the most widely watched – belonged to Daily Show host Jon Stewart.
With his trademark frustration, Stewart blasted Netanyahu for claiming to speak for the entire Jewish people ahead of "festival of slights" to celebrate the "sacred Jewish holiday of Suck-on-it."
"The truth is no one can speak for all Jews for we are a varied and heterodoxical people... We like to argue," said Stewart a few hours after Netanyahu's speech.

Top CNN correspondent Christiane Amanpour said that Netanyahu's address "was a very dark Strangelovian speech painting the picture of a dystopian world, raising the specter of a genocidal nation, a genocidal regime spraying nuclear weapons to annihilate the whole world and the whole region. Now, obviously many people are very concerned about Iran and there is a deep lack of trust, but surely the same was said of the Soviet Union all those years ago.



Chris Matthews of MSNBC called the speech a "takeover" of our foreign policy, and opened up a can of whoop-ass on Bibi.

“I’ll get to the heart of this speech now,” Matthews told MSNBC’s Thomas Roberts. “This man from a foreign government walked into the United States legislative chamber and tried to take over U.S. foreign policy. He said, ‘You should trust me, not your president on this. I am the man you should trust, I am your true leader on this question of U.S. geopolitics. To protect yourself, you must listen to me and not this president.’”

“It was a startling situation,” . . . “To allow someone to come in — knowing that was going to be their message — to the U.S. Congress. This was a decision made by Boehner and certainly complied with by Netanyahu and his ambassador [Ron Dermer]. They went into the U.S. Congress to take over U.S. foreign policy from the president.”

“Think it through, what country in the world would let a foreign leader come in and attempt to wrest from the president control of the U.S. foreign policy?” Matthews asked.

“This was a takeover attempt by Netanyahu with this complying America partners to take American foreign policy out of the hands of the president.”

Joni Ernst and the #BreadBagShoes Meme ~ Updated!

Senator Joni Ernst of Iowa gave the main GOP response to the President's 2015 State of the Union Address last night. She's the gal who campaigned on the fact that she has castrated hogs on her family farm because apparently that kind of distasteful macho boast appeals to Tea Party wingnuts. Last night I'm sure Ernst hoped to shine on national television, yet she managed to sound as crazy as her cosmic doppelganger, Michele Bachmann. It all comes down to the phrase "Bread Bag Shoes," which is now a hashtag and a meme.

“You see, growing up, I had only one good pair of shoes. So on rainy school days, my mom would slip plastic bread bags over them to keep them dry,” Ernst said. “But I was never embarrassed. Because the school bus would be filled with rows and rows of young Iowans with bread bags slipped over their feet.”

Does anyone really believe this story? I certainly don't. And Ernst manages to sound as if she's just so happy to have busloads of poor children surrounding her in Iowa. But I bet that won't bother her when she votes against financial help for those same children, because that's what Tea Party members do. She is just like Senator Paul Ryan, who touted giving children an empty lunch bag instead of a free lunch. Symbolism and Irony are wasted on these people.

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—Senator Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) shared more folksy stories of her childhood on Wednesday, telling reporters that she used to wear a bucket on her head for no apparent reason.
“I’d be walking outside our house and see a bucket lying there, and I’d say to myself, ‘That’s a perfectly good bucket, I think I’ll put it on my head,’ ” she said. “It wasn’t because I needed a hat or anything. I must have had, oh gosh, a half-dozen hats or so. I just wanted to wear a bucket.”
Ernst said that during her youth, she was known for poking a hole in a large piece of corrugated cardboard and wearing it as a poncho.
“I can’t for the life of me tell you why I did that,” she said. “I just liked the look of it, I guess. Nobody paid much attention to it. People sure don’t notice your cardboard poncho when you’re wearing a bucket on your head.”

It was a bitterly cold day in New Jersey as Governor Chris Christie was sworn in for his second term, and his celebration on Ellis Island was canceled due to the Polar Vortex. Probably not the wonderful time he and his wife had been imagining with all the subpoenas and the controversy. But that's okay - they simply pretended nothing was wrong! Also sworn in was the Lt. Governor Kim Guadagno who allegedly threatened to withhold Hurricane Sandy funds from the Mayor of Hoboken, but she was all smiles too. Well, I guess they should enjoy life while they have the luxury and before more stuff hits the fan, and I don't mean snow. Also some of the other Republicans have begun to throw snowballs at Christie, and that's got to hurt. But not as much as possible jail time and losing your career and all chances of EVER being President of the U.S. - that's really being out in the cold.












His speech itself was a mix of bromides, clichés, political red meat and his characteristic self-absorption, with the use of the first-person pronoun nearly 20 times by my count. And this is a period of intended new humility for the White House wannabe.
“I believe in you, New Jersey, and I always will,” he declared Tuesday afternoon, as if there could be no greater affirmation than his own faith in the state. Lucky citizens!
Christie was greeted warmly when introduced. The standing ovation he received, presumably from the friends, family and political allies he invited to his inaugural, suggested a circling of the wagons by the committed.

He does not serve the goals of that organization by staying as chairman (of the Republican Governors Association).
From the perspective of setting aside this as an issue in other races, it makes sense for him to step aside. That doesn't mean any of the charges political or otherwise are substantive or not, it doesn't matter. Perception is reality.

Rand Paul keeps taking a new helping of words even while challenging Rachel Maddow of MSNBC to a Duel (as in, shooting her) over her reports about him. Blame the Haters!!!

“[U]nder thousands of things I’ve written, yeah, there are times when they’ve been sloppy or not correct or we’ve made an error. But the difference is I take it as an insult, and I will not lie down and say people can call me dishonest, misleading or misrepresenting. I have never intentionally done so.
“And like I say, if – you know, if dueling were legal in Kentucky, if they keep it up, you know, it’d be a duel challenge. But I can’t do that because I can’t hold office in Kentucky then.”

There is nothing wrong with the reporting. . . . You can try to make this about me, but how about addressing the substance?
And now Rand Paul wants to shoot at me or stab me with a sword or something for reporting something true that he has done wrong as a politician. Responding to the person rather than to the charge is a time tested tactic. Honestly, it is a symptom of immaturity in our political discourse that it's expected that this is part of the way he'll respond.

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow pointed out the similarities between Rand Paul’s talk in Virginia about Gattaca and that futuristic film’s Wikipedia entry.
. . . A revision history of the Gattaca Wikipedia page showed Paul had to have copied the speech since no changes were made after Paul’s speech.
A June 12, 2013 speech on immigration discussed the movie Stand and Deliver.
. . . the Wikipedia article on the film with red lines over the text...appears verbatim in Paul’s speech.

Nobody is accusing you of pretending that you wrote ‘Gattaca’ or that you wrote ‘Stand and Deliver,’ that is not what this about. This is not about you explaining a plot line. This is about you lifting other peoples’ words verbatim and pretending that they are your own. This is something that high school students know not to do. And you are presenting yourself as potential candidate for president.
