Bergdahl Swap Causes GOP Brain Meltdown - Updated with More Hate

head explode photo: imagesqtbnANd9GcSvhCkal5JFEwmNQLTUW.jpg

Because the GOP hates the President so much, they will seize on anything to try and sully his actions, even if they once agreed with him. And right now their heads are exploding because soldier Bowe Bergdahl, who has been held by the Taliban for five years, was traded for some Gitmo prisoners. Even though the deal was in the works for years and many Senators, such as John McCain, knew about it, they are now expressing outrage that Obama dared to do something as Commander in Chief during time of war. How dare he? Uppity! No President has EVER done that before! Except George Washington. And Nixon. And Reagan. Oops . . .

And to make things worse, soldiers who served with Bergdahl have come out accusing him of cowardice and desertion, as if that changes the fact that he was held as a prisoner of war until his health began to fail. The soldiers in his unit, who obviously did not like him anyway, are saying they resent that lives were lost while searching for him in the desert, and accused him of doing horrible things such as sympathizing with the plight of the Afghanis. Not very patriotic since if they had been captured first Bergdahl would have had to risk his life searching for them, since that's what soldiers do. But all of that has fed into the GOP frenzy to slam the prisoner swap as "President Trades Terrorists for a Deserter."

The GOP have even attacked Bowe Bergdahl's father for having a beard and saying "Allah" in front of the President. And Obama smiled at him, therefore MUSLIN!!! Beards and the entire Muslim religion are somehow anti-American now, except for Duck Dynasty, of course, who are true Patriots for hating The Gay. How about some respect for the family of a young man who served his country but may have been conflicted by war, like thousands of other young soldiers throughout history?

The whole mess is about Obama Derangement Syndrome and Self-Righteous Vigilante Justice. For the past few days the GOP has been going around like General Patton when he slapped a man for having post-traumatic stress disorder, and for which he was demoted during WWII. What he did to that poor man wasn't right, and Americans instinctively know this, unless you have the instincts of the GOP, which aren't very sharp. Therefore, Twitter is awash with calls for firing squads and executions from the same people who were whining about cow-abuse at Bundy Ranch a few weeks ago. It's astonishing.

BBC: Video of Bergdahl Release:

This is what happens at the end of wars. Regardless of the circumstances, whatever those circumstances may turn out to be, we still get an American soldier back if he’s held in captivity. We don’t condition that.
~ President Obama speaking in Warsaw on the prisoner trade and release of Bowe Bergdahl, via Time

Our first priority is assuring his well-being and his health and getting him reunited with his family. Other circumstances that may develop and questions, those will be dealt with later.
~ Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel

"We really don't know why he left the base and under what circumstances," Pentagon spokesman Rear Adm. John Kirby said Monday. Details of that will come out, he said, adding that the Army has never classified Bergdahl as a deserter and has scheduled the soldier for a promotion next month. But the details around a soldier being taken captive "don't matter," he said, when it comes to the military's response.
~ CNN

He walked off. He left his guard post. Nobody knows if he defected or he's a traitor or he was kidnapped. What I do know is, he was there to protect us, and instead he decided to defer from America and go and do his own thing. I don't know why he decided to do that, but we spent so much of our resources, and some of those resources were soldiers' lives.
~ Former Pfc. Jose Baggett, 27, a member of Bergdahl's company

It’s true that Bergdahl was never officially categorized as a “prisoner of war,” since the Pentagon apparently stopped using that designation years ago. But he was defined as “missing/captured,” which is essentially the same thing. And while the Taliban fighters who were released were likewise not formally designated prisoners of war, either, because of the odd, formally undeclared status of the war with Afghanistan, that’s what they were.
. . . It’s shocking to see conservatives argue that the Taliban should have the final word on an American soldier’s fate, even if he’s accused of desertion.
~ Joan Walsh on Salon

We Lost Soldiers in the Hunt for Bergdahl, a Guy Who Walked Off in the Dead of Night
For the veterans of the units that lost these men, Bergdahl’s capture and the subsequent hunt for him will forever tie to their memories, and to a time in their lives that will define them as people. He has finally returned. Those men will never have the opportunity.

The GOP Deranged Clown Circus

How many soldiers lost their lives to capture those five Taliban terrorists that we just released? Ambassador [Susan] Rice basically said to you, yes, U.S. policy has changed. Now we make deals with terrorists. And the question going forward is, have we just put a price on other U.S. soldiers? What does this tell terrorists, that if you capture a U.S. soldier, you can trade that soldier for five terrorists we’ve gone after?
~ Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas

I don’t think he [Obama] should have made that deal. He may well pay a price.
. . . I know everyone’s happy to see him back and all that. The fact is, Susan Rice said on TV yesterday he was taken on the battlefield and that he served the United States with honor and distinction. There’s a lot of reporting that he wasn’t taken in battle, he seems to have deserted or at least gone AWOL, he may have cooperated with the enemy after they captured him, soldiers died trying to find him.
~ Bill Kristol of the Weekly Standard on Morning Joe, via Politico

The Grand Hypocrites of All Time

No, Mr. President, a soldier expressing horrid anti-American beliefs – even boldly putting them in writing and unabashedly firing off his messages while in uniform, just three days before he left his unit on foot – is not "honorable service." Unless that is your standard.
. . . You blew it again, Barack Obama, by negotiating away any leverage against the bad guys as these bad guys – Osama Bin Laden's partners in evil crime – joyfully celebrate their "win" in the deal you sealed.
~ Sarah Palin, ex-politician, on Facebook

I am eager to learn what precise steps are being taken to ensure that these vicious and violent Taliban extremists never return to the fight against the United States and our partners or engage in any activities that can threaten the prospects for peace and security in Afghanistan.
~ Senator John McCain, R-Arizona, who is also an Ex-Prisoner-of-War exchanged in a deal under President Nixon

I strongly believe that we should have been consulted, that the law should have been followed. And I very much regret that that was not the case.
~ Senator Dianne Feinstein, D-California

Obama Explains Symptoms of Mitt's "Romnesia" ~ with Updates

Photobucket

source: eriksfactory.tumblr.com

Obama at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia, October 19, 2012

(My Transcript)

The choice between going backward and going forward has never been so clear.

But now that we're 18 days out from the election, Mr. Severely Conservative wants you to think he was severely kidding about everything he said over the last year.

He told folks he was the 'ideal candidate' for the Tea Party. Now suddenly he is saying, 'What? Who me?'

He's forgetting what his own positions are. And he's bettin' that you are too.

I mean, he's changing up so much and he's backtracking, and side-steppin' -

We've gotta name this condition that he's going through.

I think it's called "Romnesia."

(Cheers from the Crowd)

I think that's what he's going through. I'm not a medical doctor, but I do want to go over some of the symptoms with you because I want to make sure no one else catches it.

(Clapping)

If you say you're for equal pay for equal work, but you keep refusing to say whether or not you'd sign a bill that protects equal pay for equal work, you might have Romnesia.

(Laughter and Cheers)

If you say women should have access to contraceptive care but you support legislation that would let your employer deny you contraceptive care, you might have a case of Romnesia.

If you say you'll protect a woman's right to choose, but you stand up at a primary debate and you said you'd be 'delighted' to sign a law outlawing that right to choose in all cases, man, you've definitely got Romnesia.

(Laughter and Cheers)

Now, this extends to other issues. If you say earlier in the year 'I'm going to give a tax cut to the top 1%, and then in a debate he says 'I don't know anything about giving tax cuts to the rich folks.' That - that - you need to get a thermometer and take a temperature, 'cause you've probably got Romnesia.

(Clapping and Cheers)

If you say that you're a champion of the coal industry, when while you were governor you stood in front of a coal plant and said 'This plant will kill you,' . . .

(Crowd Shouts "You Could Have Romnesia!)

That's the Romnesia.

So, I think you're becoming able to identify these symptoms. And if you come down with a case of Romnesia . . .

(President laughs, crowd laughs)

. . . and you can't seem to remember the policies that are still on your website, or the promises you've made over the six years you've been running for President, here's the Good News!

Obamacare covers pre-existing conditions!!!

(Crowd Roars)

We can fix you up!!! We've got a cure!!! We can make you well, Virginia. This is a curable disease. Ha ha.

Women! Men! All of you! These are family issues, these are economic issues. I want my daughters to have the same opportunities as anybody's sons. I believe America does better, the economy does better grows more and we create more jobs when everybody participates. When everyone's getting a fair shot. Everybody's getting a fair shake. Everybody's playing by the same rules. Everybody's doing their fair share.

That's why I'm running for a second term for President of the United States. I need you to help me finish the job!

(Crowd roars)

Mitt's Plan: Uninsured Should go to Candy Mountain, I mean the ER

Photobucket

gif from thegifinyourfolder

"Well, we do provide care for people who don't have insurance. If someone has a heart attack, they don't sit in their apartment and die. We pick them up in an ambulance, and take them to the hospital, and give them care. And different states have different ways of providing for that care."
Mitt Romney in an interview with Scott Pelley of CBS's "60 Minutes" that aired Sunday night

Contradiction ~ Etch-A-Sketch 2010
Look, it doesn't make a lot of sense for us to have millions and millions of people who have no health insurance and yet who can go to the emergency room and get entirely free care for which they have no responsibility, particularly if they are people who have sufficient means to pay their own way.
~ Mitt Romney in March 2010 on Morning Joe

And . . . Flip-Flop 2007
When they show up at the hospital, they get care. They get free care paid for by you and me. If that's not a form of socialism, I don't know what is. So my plan did something quite different. It said, you know what? If people can afford to buy insurance ... or if they can pay their own way, then they either buy that insurance or pay their own way, but they no longer look to government to hand out free care. And that, in my opinion, is ultimate conservativism.
~ Mitt on the Glenn Beck Show, 2007

The immediate goal is to make sure there are more people on private insurance plans. I mean, people have access to health care in America. After all, you just go to an emergency room.
~ George W. Bush, 2007, via Eclectablog

No Health Insurance? No problem. Romney Says That Freeloading In The ER Is Now All Good

~ Headline on Forbes

I'll simply state the obvious... ER visits are reactive, not preventive. When I can walk into an ER and pick up blood pressure or cholesterol meds which could PREVENT that hypothetical heart attack, that's when I'll consider the ER a form a socialized health care.
~ comment by Buford on AmericaBlog

"Don't worry, peasants! There will be hospitals there to treat you while you're dying of something that could have been prevented."
~ comment by leftistmenace_1 on Daily Beast

Let me tell you what happens when the uninsured to to the emergency room. You get a bill for somewhere between $10,000 and $20,000....then when you can't pay the ridiculous amount they have charged you....you get harassed for years by a collection agency. Sometimes...you get two bills...one from the local hospital and another from their parent company. I know someone this has happened to. It's a sad and dangerous situation.
Romney doesn't get it......just doesn't.
~ comment by Marmee on Daily Beast

Now we have heard it from the horse mouth himself. Romney Ryan and Republican House Party want to treat the 47% like "LIVESTOCK". Take away our healthcare "OBAMACARE" for "romneyDIEcare". Wake-up PEOPLES Romney only vision $$$$$$$$$$$$$ look he came straight for our money our health we worth alot to him and his 1% BROKE = DEATH
~ comment by LawannaSauls on Daily Beast

Does this mean that on day one of his presidency, when he repeals the Obama Affordable Care Act (as he promises to do) that ER's all over the country will happily fling open their doors to everyone with a vaginal infection, the hives, an earache, the flu, mild dizziness and other every-day type medical concerns?
He comes out with a reasonable, workable health care plan in Massachusetts, but 'ER's-IN-A-BOX' is the best he can do for a whole country?
Unbelievable.

Romney Camp in a Ball of Confusion

Photobucket

To Romney: You had an entire week off to listen to the Democrats' arguments against you, to think about how you're going to sell yourself to the public for this homestretch of the campaign. You had a whole week. And what you came up with is "I kinda like Obamacare" and "Paul Ryan has a horrible voting record"? But when you're pressed on those about-faces you're going to deny . . .
. . . Either this is such high-level campaign genius that we just don't understand the complexity of what they are doing here, or they don't have any idea of what they are doing here.
~ Rachel Maddow on MSNBC

Dan Rather on Rachel Maddow:
I think the Romney campaign is in a bad stretch. It may or may not last. It may or may not be decisive in the campaign. But they are having a terrible week post the Democratic Convention. . . . Here's the basic problem. Does this man know what it is he believes? Is he willing to stick to it and is he willing to fight for it? Whatever the truth of it is, the perception has been there from the beginning - 'this guy may not know what he wants to do when he gets into the presidency - where he stands.'
These last few days have fueled that anew. If he wins, he wins on jobs and the economy. He can't seem to keep the focus there. And you know you can't win a campaign with more twists than a pretzel factory and expect people not to catch up, not in the present day.
And Rachel I think future historians and politicians and people who cover politics will be looking at this campaign and studying it for a long time to come because the center of gravity has changed with Facebook, Twitter, and the immense amount of coverage through the campaign. There was a time not long ago when you could say one thing to one group of people and another to another group of people and it wouldn't really catch up with you. Those days are gone. Now either the Romney camp doesn't understand that, which could be serious if the campaign goes along, or they're just having a bad few days and they'll refocus....

Romney Surrogate Tara Wall on MSNBC:
JANSING: What are the (tax) loopholes you would close? Will you tell the American people how you’re going to to this better place that you say they have?

WALL: Well, again, the campaign has laid out a number of specifics relative to the principles that will guide the policies of a Romney-Ryan ticket. [...] Again, the specification include policies that are pro-growth in nature, that reduce the deficit, that reduce the burden on taxpayers and small businesses, small businesses number one have been hit hard by a number of regulations that have stifled growth and job creation. And so number one, those are some of the things you have to start with.

JANSING: Well, with all due respect, a pro-growth policy is not specific.

WALL: The other part of that is energy independence. That’s an approach to energy independence that will create millions of jobs. There is a target of 12 million jobs by the Romney-Ryan target. Relative to those loopholes that you mention, I agree that Congressman Ryan pointed out (that) have to be put out in a public debate. But I think, again, we have to look at the overall principles that are going to drive the policies and not ram through policy as we saw with Obamacare.

This is embarrassing.

. . . Aware that President Obama’s policies in these areas are quite popular once people learn about them, the Republicans are simply sowing confusion.

Andrea Saul Commits Romneycide ~ with Updates

When Mitt Romney and Bain closed the plant, I lost my healthcare, and my family lost their healthcare. And a short time after that my wife became ill . . . and I took her up to the Jackson County Hospital and admitted her for pneumonia and that’s when they found the cancer and by then it was stage four/It was, there was nothing they could do for her. And she passed away in 22 days.
~ Joe Soptic, former employee of GST Steel, in an Obama ad discussing the lack of insurance that led to his wife's death from cancer when Bain Capital closed the mill

“To that point, if people had been in Massachusetts, under Governor Romney’s health care plan, they would have had health care."
Romney Press Secretary Andrea Saul on Fox News

This isn't about health care! They're out there saying that your guy killed this woman! And your answer is 'well, she'd a had healthcare if she lived in Massachusetts'?
. . . Andrea Saul’s appearance on Fox was a potential gold mine for Obama supporters. They can say, ‘Romneycare was the basis for our health care.'

~ Rush Limbaugh quoted by TPM

Spokeswoman Saul said these words that were followed by a thunderclap of hands smacking foreheads around the nation.
. . . Lord, lord, lord! The last thing conservatives want to talk about, even less than Romney's tax returns (because at least there, they have a common enemy in Sen. Harry Reid), is Romneycare's similarity to Obamacare. Saul's comment turns Romney into the conservative's worst nightmare! Their main complaint about Romney all the way back to the primary season was his implementation of Obamacare on a state level would make him an ineffective messenger on repealing the president's legislation.

Epic Fail; nay, epochal . . . This is the most tone-deaf campaign in history. No one is competent; no one stays on message; and the candidate has all the warmth and charm of a basilisk, minus that whole cool turn-people-to-stone thing.

Today they endorsed in essence the central idea of the Affordable Care Act. They've done it because they're in a lot of trouble. . . . they've lost the Long Hot Summer, they've ended up in a situation where Romney's upside-down in his favorable/unfavorable. These Bain ads are really hurting him. And they come up with this answer.
It seemed opportunistic, but it was stupid.
. . . When you run as somebody you're not, it's hard to keep straight who you're supposed to be
~ Bob Shrum on Hardball

Romney's) stuck in a position where, because he didn't want to repudiate the plan, he now is in this middle ground where he says this thing that is kind of incoherent. "Well, I think my plan was great - it was great for Massachusetts. It wouldn't be great for the country, though." . . . Now he's in this ridiculous position saying what they actually believe. He's proud of the plan.
This is Andrea Saul committing the classic definition of a gaffe. . . . speaking for her boss perfectly. He believes in Massachusetts, in Romneycare. He thinks it's great. The problem for him is the contortions he's had to go through to get right with the Right, and . . . this thing is going to come back and kill him in the debates!

Romney Now Calls Mandate a Tax

Photobucket

I said that I agreed with the dissent, and the dissent made it very clear that they felt it was unconstitutional. But the dissent lost - it's in the minority.
Now the Supreme Court has spoken and while I agreed with the dissent, that’s taken over by the fact that the majority of the court said it’s a tax. Therefore it is a tax. They have spoken. There’s no way around that. You can try and say you wish they’d decided a different way, but they didn't. They concluded it’s a tax. That’s what it is.
~ Mitt Romney on CBS News, July 4, 2012

More from Huffington Post
UPDATE: 3:28 p.m. -- The Romney campaign has released a fuller transcript of the CBS interview, in which the candidate is asked the question:

If the mandate is a tax under Obamacare, isn't it also a tax under Masscare?

"Actually the chief justice in his opinion made it very clear that at the state level, states have the power to put in place mandates," Romney replied. "They don’t need to require them to be called taxes in order for them to be constitutional. And as a result, Massachusetts’ mandate was a mandate, was a penalty, was described that way by the legislature and by me, and so it stays as it was."

The governor disagreed with the court. He agreed with the dissent that was written by Justice Scalia which very clearly stated that the mandate was not a tax. ~ Eric Fehrnstrom, Top Romney Aide, July 2, 2012

Yeah, that Law School . . . Harvard . . . the same one Mitt attended when he got a Law Degree.

But today has sooooo made up for it! :)   This happened today on CNN via ThinkProgress (video at link). Fehrnstrom is a campaign aide to Mitt Romney.

HOST: Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?
FEHRNSTROM: Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch A Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all of over again.

Someone on Twitter suggested that this forevermore shall be called the "Fehrnstrom Gaffe" because hilarity has ensued, stores are selling etch-a-sketches like hot cakes, and the other candidates are shake-shake-shaking during campaign speeches today. Incredible!
