Our Patriotic Moment Has Come - Trump is Toast

As House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to hold a vote on Impeachment this Thursday, and as the so-called President is taunted while watching the Washington Nationals play baseball with chants of "Lock Him Up" from the crowd,as well as by protestors when he visited Chicago today. Have we reached our patriotic turn of the tide at last in this country? Dare we hope that this is the beginning of the end of Trump's reign of insanity?

Is this like the moment in Casablanca when Lazslo tells the band to play Le Marseillaise?

President Obama's Epic Ad Lib During State of the Union

 photo B72WzPWIUAAT_t2.jpg

A defiant and proud President Obama gave probably the best one-liner response EVER to GOP hecklers on the night of the State of the Union speech. Call it "shade," a "pwn," a "sick burn," or a "slam-dunk," it was fabulous!

Via Washington Post
"I have no more campaigns to run,” Obama said, to which the Republicans in the audience applauded sarcastically. He came back in the very next beat: “I know, because I won both of them."

The Fools of April: Obamacare Success Makes GOP Heads Explode

 photo imagesqtbnANd9GcSMaiwzrQGGZ9IYofx-M.jpg

President Obama took a victory lap today on the success of Obamacare/ACA enrollment, and why not? It's the crowning achievement of his Presidency, and he has faced down critics from both Right and Left, but mostly Right, as well as a critical media for YEARS now. But the Tea Party and their minions on Fox News and elsewhere won't ever admit defeat. They merely come up with new talking points and go on a rampage of taunts and accusations - they have become the "Obamacare Truthers" just as they were the "IRS Truthers" and the "Benghazi Truthers" before that. Anything accomplished by President Obama has to be debunked as a fake feckless false flag.

Will history remember the names of Obamacare's detractors? Not in a good way, as the President says in the transcript below.

Transcript Excerpt: Remarks by the President on the Affordable Care Act
Rose Garden of the White House
April 1, 2014

THE PRESIDENT: . . . Six months ago today, a big part of the Affordable Care Act kicked in as healthcare.gov and state insurance marketplaces went live. And millions of Americans finally had the same chance to buy quality, affordable health care -- and the peace of mind that comes with it -- as everybody else.

Last night, the first open-enrollment period under this law came to an end. And despite several lost weeks out of the gate because of problems with the website, 7.1 million Americans have now signed up for private insurance plans through these marketplaces -- 7.1. (Applause.)

. . . And, yes, at times this reform has been contentious and confusing and obviously it's had a share of critics. That's part of what change looks like in a democracy. change is hard. Fixing what is broken is hard, overcoming skepticism and fear of something new is hard.

A lot of times folks would prefer the devil they know to the devil they don't, but this law is doing what it is supposed to do. it's working. It's helping people from coast-to-coast. All of which makes the lengths to which people have gone to scare people or undermine the law without offering any plausible understandable makes it hard to understand.

I've got to admit it, I don't get it. why are folks working so hard for people not to have health insurance? Why are they so mad about the idea of folks having health insurance?

Many of the tall tales have been debunked, there are still no death panels, Armageddon has not arrived. Instead, this law is helping millions of Americans and it will help many more. I said before I will always work with anyone who is willing to make this law work even better. but the debate over repealing this law is over. The Affordable Care Act is here to stay.

. . . In the end, history is not kind to those who would deny Americans their basic economic security. Nobody remembers well those who stand in the way of America's progress or our people. that's what the Affordable Care Act represents

Transcript of Fox and Friends via Raw Story, April 1, 2014
Senator Ted Cruz, R-Texas: . . . At this point you can't fiddle around the edges. It is the essence of pragmatism to recognize this thing isn't working. Let's start over. Let's repeal every word of it.
Host Steve Doocy: You know, you’re kind of in a minority when it comes to that. You look at the polling, Senator, and a lot of Americans like parts of it, would like to see parts of it continue. So, to blow the whole thing up, I don’t know if people are behind that.

~~~~~~~
I think they're cooking the books on this.
~ Senator John Barasso, R-Wyoming
This is a phony number, and it’s wonderfully precise. These guys go six months without any idea what the numbers are, and all of a sudden, it’s to a decimal point. But of course it’s meaningless because…we don’t know how many of them have paid…and how many were previously uninsured.
~ Charles Krauthammer on Fox News
It is an all-out Regime and media swarm on Obamacare. We are being pummeled. We are being beat upside the head. We're being beat on top of the head. They're hitting above the belt and below the belt. They're creaming us out there. 'Cause guess what? They hit their seven million. Overnight they got something like five million people to sign up. They got their seven million. The media's so excited.
. . . To you and me, these numbers are obviously not believable. They're obviously cooked. There's no question. But to the low-information crowd that believes that anything coming from government is gospel, the real numbers are now the subject of Obama's version of "don't ask, don't tell." We're not supposed to ask and we're not supposed to tell. The numbers are what they are and we're supposed to live with it.
Senator Mitch McConnell Calls Hillary Clinton a "Golden Girl"
 photo s-MITCH-MCCONNELL-large.jpg
Don’t tell me the Democrats are the party of the future when their presidential ticket in 2016 is shaping up to look like a rerun of ‘The Golden Girls.
We have Rand Paul, Marco Rubio and a slew of bright, young, energetic governors ready to take America into the future. And the other guys? They got Hillary and Joe Biden.
~ Senator Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, at CPAC joking about Hillary Clinton and Joe Biden running for the President in 2016
 photo a05ef8c9-fe7e-499f-bd15-f1eaab74871e.jpg
This morning Mitch McConnell said that if former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton ran for President, it would be like a re-run of the Golden Girls. I can't believe it, I have always admired Hillary Clinton for all she has done. Not just for America, but for women worldwide. It's disgusting that Mitch McConnell would resort to these kind of petty attacks.
NRA Against the World
Photobucket
Let me be clear. Freedom is not a handgun on the hip of every teacher, and security should not mean a guard posted outside every classroom. That is not who we are in Connecticut, and it is not who we will allow ourselves to become.
~ Governor Dannel Malloy of Connecticut
I know that the issue of gun control is hard. I know it's political. I know it's controversial. ... I say to you: Forget the extremists. It's simple, no one hunts with an assault rifle. No one needs 10 bullets to kill a deer and too many innocent people have died already. End the madness, now!
~ NY Governor Andrew Cuomo in his State of the State Address
(The NRA) lost seven out of eight Senate races where they put more than $100,000 dollars in. They got clobbered in the Presidential race. Their campaign slogan was "All In." They were going "All In" because they were telling people that President Obama literally was going to destroy all freedom in America. Well, no one responded to that message. No one cared. So if on one hand they want to claim that they single-handedly supposedly won the 1994 and 2000 election, well, you gotta own up to getting shellacked in this one.
~ Ladd Everitt, Director of Communications for the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow Show
I think they're being disingenuous. I think that they see this as an opportunity to go after the Second Amendment, which they've wanted to do for years, if not decades, and I think they're going to do everything they can to strip Americans of their right to keep and bear arms.
~ NRA President David Keene, the day before a meeting with Vice President Joe Biden
There will come a time when the gun owners of America, the law-abiding gun owners of America, will be the Rosa Parks and we will sit down on the front seat of the bus, case closed
. . . If you were attempting to write an offensive script to a new ‘Planet of the Apes’ movie, I couldn’t come up with a dumber and [more] unbelievable insanity than our government and our media is perpetrating on the American public,
~ Rocker Gun Nut Ted Nugent on World Net Daily
Gun Groups Meet With Joe Biden
There’s a real, very tight window to do this. I committed to him I’d have these recommendations to (Obama) by Tuesday, and it doesn’t mean it’s the end of the discussion, but the public wants us to act.
. . . There is nothing that has pricked the consciousness of the American people, there is nothing that has gone to the heart of the matter more than the visual image people have of little 6-year-old kids riddled — not shot with a stray bullet — riddled, riddled with bullet holes in their classroom. And the public demands we speak to it.
~ Vice President Joe Biden at Meeting with Gun Groups on January 10, 2013
Breaking News: School Shooting in Taft, California During NRA Meeting:
Taft Union High School in Taft, Calif., normally has an armed guard on campus to help officials with problems that go "beyond the scope" of the administration.
But on Thursday morning, as a student showed up with a shotgun and fired two to four shots at a teacher and a classmate, the officer was nowhere to be found.
"He couldn't get there because he was snowed in," Sheriff Donny Youngblood of the Kern County Sheriff’s Department said in a press conference Thursday afternoon.
~ Sam Stein reporting for Huffington Post
The difference between this shooting and the shooting at Newtown and the shooting at the theater in Aurora and many of the other mass shootings is the difference between a shotgun and an assault weapon.
~ comment by Martha R. on Huff Post
~~~~~~~~~~~~

After the Meeting, the NRA Released this statement:
Fairfax, Va. – The National Rifle Association of America is made up of over 4 million moms and dads, daughters and sons, who are involved in the national conversation about how to prevent a tragedy like Newtown from ever happening again. We attended today's White House meeting to discuss how to keep our children safe and were prepared to have a meaningful conversation about school safety, mental health issues, the marketing of violence to our kids and the collapse of federal prosecutions of violent criminals.
We were disappointed with how little this meeting had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment. While claiming that no policy proposals would be “prejudged,” this Task Force spent most of its time on proposed restrictions on lawful firearms owners - honest, taxpaying, hardworking Americans. It is unfortunate that this Administration continues to insist on pushing failed solutions to our nation's most pressing problems. We will not allow law-abiding gun owners to be blamed for the acts of criminals and madmen. Instead, we will now take our commitment and meaningful contributions to members of congress of both parties who are interested in having an honest conversation about what works - and what does not.

NRA vows to fight everything on Biden's gun agenda
. . . The NRA says it knows after the Newtown shooting, they're facing a gun control debate unlike any in its history. They may be more politically isolated than they were in 1994 when the assault weapons ban was first pushed tenaciously through Congress by then-Sen. Joe Biden.
~ CBS News

The Gun Lobby, the NRA, at least, in some ways is a victim of their own success. Their MO is to prevent anyone from even bringing up gun control legislation, to make it seem politically impossible to even broach the subject. And so they're not used to having to debate their side of the argument with powerful, motivated, organized proponents of the opposite view. In other words, they have been so successful in shutting down any possible debate over gun control in this country that they now seem legitimately surprised that there might be a debate in this country over gun control.
Their reaction today to their meeting with Vice President Joe Biden in Washington was that they said they were 'disappointed.' That was their word 'disappointed' that one of the subjects being discussed was reforming gun laws. Yeah, what did you think you were there to talk about?

Right Wing Goes Godwin on Guns When Biden Says Executive Orders Possible

Photobucket

I want to make it clear that we are not going to get caught up in the notion (that) unless we can do everything we're going to do nothing. It's critically important (that) we act.
. . . The President is going to act, there are executive orders, executive action that can be taken. We haven't decided what that is yet. But we're compiling it all with the help of the Attorney General and all the rest of the cabinet members as well as legislative action, we believe is required.
~ Vice President Joe Biden via Reuters

Photobucket
source: Atlantic

The Drudge Report seemed to reach a new level of gun-confiscation hysteria Tuesday afternoon when it used photos of Adolph Hitler and Joseph Stalin to illustrate the headline, "WHITE HOUSE THREATENS 'EXECUTIVE ORDERS' ON GUNS," linking to a story about Joe Biden's brief statement about his gun-proposal committee.
. . . Of course, this is all an illustration of Godwin's Law: "As an online discussion grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving Nazis or Hitler approaches 1." ("Hitler ate sugar," a Daria character said.) But if Drudge's image choice was shocking, it's another example of the phenomenon of the very right wing talking to itself and no one else.
~ The Atlantic

What Drudge is correctly evoking is that both Stalin and Hitler first disarmed their populations before beginning the worst excesses of their reigns. By executive order.
~ comment by Big Boy on Michelle Malkin's Blog

Biden can BITE ME. Much like Mahatma Ghandi when asked by his British Overlords how he was going to kick them out of India, "If 70 million Indians refused to do what you say, what can you do?"
THE ANSWER is the same here.
There are 100,000,000 American GUN owners. IF they say 'register' or 'turn em in', if only 10,000,000 say "NO", what are they going to do?
IF 1,000,000 decide to hold a revolution, what will they do?
Obama is overconfident in his abilities. He is drunk with power. He is stupid in the fact that he THINKS, everyone will just DO what he says.
AND it will only take a few GENERALS, and a few thousand troops to say "F*** NO." For him to have a revolution on his hands.
. . . AND when the criminals and terrorists come to America and start killing your family and friends, then give us a call. AND the AMERICAN GUN OWNER will be the reason you will be free again.
THE REASON the JAPANESE never invaded the USA in WW2 was because ADMIRAL ISOKORU YAMAMOTO said: "there would be a sniper behind each blade of grass." KNOWING Americans owned guns and would defend their land. UNLIKE IN JAPAN and GERMANY at the time, their populations were REQUIRED to turn in guns and weapons. WE all know what happened after that. THEY became dictatorships and fought wars of conquest.
~ comment by Jim on Washington Times

Obama to follow in footsteps of Hitler, Stalin with 'executive order' disarmament of the American people
It's official. President Obama is going to march America down the dark halls of history by following in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, Mao Tse Tung and all the other gun-grabbing madmen who have exploited fear to achieve the total concentration of power in the hands of dictatorial government.America is headed into civil war.
. . . This is the moment when America either falls to tyrants or rises to resist it.
Gun grabbers actually want your guns so they can murder you with them
The real agenda of gun grabbers has now become crystal clear: They want to kill gun owners and anyone who doesn't bow down to the Hitlerian madness of the Obama administration.
Last night on the Piers Morgan show on CNN, guests openly threatened Alex Jones' children with being killed, and then one guest openly suggested that Piers Morgan shoot Alex Jones with an AR-15 -- followed by laughter from the other guests on the show. It is a felony crime to threaten to murder a person, yet none of these guests who appeared on Piers Morgan have been arrested.
. . . It's all coming out. This is their true agenda: mass murder and / or genocide. Those who support gun disarmament of the American people are supporting mass murder: Michael Moore, Piers Morgan, Biden, Obama, Cuomo... they are all proponents of mass murder. They are the very same kind of people who once supported Hitler and Stalin, and now they're creating a new Hitler in Barack Obama, the would-be dictator who is thrusting America straight into a new civil war.

~ Breitbart

The very moment executive order is used to infringe upon the 2nd amendment he becomes WORSE than George III.
~ comment by cds8745 on Breitbart

The Founding Fathers never envisioned Executive Orders being used to restrict our Constitutional rights. We live in a republic, not a dictatorship.
I will use every means at my disposal to combat the agenda of the Executive branch to undermine our Second Amendment rights. I will also fight any legislative action that is taken to implement more gun control. Americans don’t want their Second Amendment freedoms restricted in any way and I will continue to fully support the right to bear arms for all law abiding citizens.

21 Unforgettable Election Memes of 2012

Photobucket

(pic credit: SnarkAmendment)

There are some unforgettable sights of Election 2012, and I'm not even sure this list is complete or can do justice to what is here. But these are images burned into our minds and retinas forever.

Cross-Posted on Life In the Snark Lane

1. Callista Gingrich's Shining Helmet Hair

Photobucket
source: Newsweek Tumblr

Callista sat directly in front of me during our CafeMom Coffee Break with Newt Gingrich a few weeks ago, and I kept sneaking peeks at her hair throughout the event. Under the lights, it practically glowed. She looked like some sort of fussy, retro angel.
I'm just dying to touch that hair!
~ Lindsay Ferrier on The Stir

I Almost Got Callista Gingrich's Hair
. . . The color alone took three hours to achieve. Three hours of bleach and gloss and glaze and goop and my head being knocked about left and right. The gloss (or maybe it was the glaze?) burned my scalp; when I mentioned this, Pejman looked right at me and said, “Beauty tingles.”

3. Romney's "Dog on the Roof" Story

Photobucket
source

Before beginning the drive, Mitt Romney put Seamus, the family’s hulking Irish setter, in a dog carrier and attached it to the station wagon’s roof rack. He’d built a windshield for the carrier, to make the ride more comfortable for the dog.
As the oldest son, Tagg Romney commandeered the way-back of the wagon, keeping his eyes fixed out the rear window, where he glimpsed the first sign of trouble. ”Dad!” he yelled. ”Gross!” A brown liquid was dripping down the back window, payback from an Irish setter who’d been riding on the roof in the wind for hours.
As the rest of the boys joined in the howls of disgust, Romney coolly pulled off the highway and into a service station. There, he borrowed a hose, washed down Seamus and the car, then hopped back onto the highway. It was a tiny preview of a trait he would grow famous for in business: emotion-free crisis management.
~ Time Swampland, quoting the original Boston Globe story

Among those who professed shock at the story was Fox News host Chris Wallace. "I have a yellow lab named Winston. I would no sooner put him in a kennel on the roof of my car than I would one of my children. Question: What were you thinking?" Wallace asked the former governor.
Replied Romney with a nervous laugh, "This is a completely airtight kennel, mounted on the top of our car. He climbed up there regularly, enjoyed himself, he was in a kennel at home a great deal of the time as well. We loved the dog, it was where he was comfortable and we had five kids inside the car and my guess is he liked it a lot better in his kennel than he would have liked it inside."

4. Mitt Romney's Etch-A-Sketch

Photobucket
source: Jed Lewison, Daily Kos

HOST on CNN: Is there a concern that Santorum and Gingrich might force the governor to tack so far to the right it would hurt him with moderate voters in the general election?
Eric Fehrnstrom, Romney Advisor: Well, I think you hit a reset button for the fall campaign. Everything changes. It’s almost like an Etch-A-Sketch. You can kind of shake it up and restart all of over again.

5. War on Women

What does it say about the college co-ed Susan Fluke [sic] who goes before a congressional committee and essentially says that she must be paid to have sex -- what does that make her? It makes her a slut, right? It makes her a prostitute. She wants to be paid to have sex. She's having so much sex she can't afford the contraception. She wants you and me and the taxpayers to pay her to have sex.
. . . So Miss Fluke, and the rest of you Feminazis, here’s the deal. If we are going to pay for your contraceptives, and thus pay for you to have sex. We want something for it. We want you to post the videos online so we can all watch.
~ Rush Limbaugh talking about Sandra Fluke

If the Democrats said we had a war on caterpillars and every mainstream media outlet talked about the fact that Republicans have a war on caterpillars, then we’d have problems with caterpillars. It's a fiction."

~ Missouri Senate Candidate Todd Akin, R-Missouri (lost)

I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realize life is that gift from God, and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something that God intended to happen.

6. Off-Shore Tax Havens in the Cayman Islands

Photobucket

The firm today has at least 138 funds organized in the Cayman Islands, and Romney himself has personal interests in at least 12, worth as much as $30 million, hidden behind controversial confidentiality disclaimers. Again, the Romney campaign insists he saves no tax by using them, but there is no way to check this.
~ Vanity Fair

Today we’re learning more about Mitt Romney’s bets against America. Vanity Fair’s raising important questions about Romney’s offshore accounts in foreign tax havens, including his mysterious corporation in Bermuda, his funds in the Cayman Islands, and the Swiss bank account he opened. The question is, why? Was he avoiding paying his fair share of U.S. taxes? Was he hedging against the dollar? Until he releases his tax returns from that period, Americans will never know. This raises serious questions. If he has nothing to hide, why doesn’t he just release his tax returns?
~ Obama Spokesman Ben LaBolt

7. Rafalca the Dancing Horse

Photobucket
source: Atlantic Wire

As a living, breathing, clippety-cloppeting, velvet-nosed and liquid-eyed avatar of Romney’s extreme wealth, she’s given her uncle Mitt the kind of handicap his advisers fear might make his path to the White House heavy going. That may be why the Republican presidential hopeful betrays scant interest in his wife’s four-legged protégé.
During Romney’s accident-prone sojourn in London in late July, he told NBC‘s Brian Williams that he didn’t even know when Rafalca would be appearing at the Games — “I have to tell you,” he said, “this is Ann’s sport.”
~ Time Magazine

Obama is going to need all the help he can get because Romney is surging, thanks in part to his new secret weapon. Long time viewers know that every year I declare a sport of the summer. Last year it was the elegant art of canoe dancing....Last week I declared that this year's sport of the summer will be Dressage, or "Horse Ballet."
. . . The Romneys are the proud owners of a German Oldenburg mare named Rafalca. There is no better way to dispel the myth that Romney is a detached patrician elite than competitive horse prancing. I mean, it's basically Nascar in a velvet top hat.

8. The Romney Shambles

Romney could not have played more into the image of the callow American if he’d showed up at Buckingham Palace in Dockers. In his honor, the nation even resurrected a little-used epithet, “wazzock,” which refers to, as John Cassidy wrote, “a hapless idiot who blunders around saying or doing things he or she shouldn’t” (or, literally, a bull’s penis). This weekend, the BBC reported that, according to Harvey Weinstein, David Cameron, the Tory Prime Minister, has told people that Romney’s graceless performance has won him “the unique distinction of uniting all of England against him with his various remarks.”
~ Lauren Collins on The New Yorker

~ Paul Ryan Radio Interview with Hugh Hewitt as he lies about his Marathon Time

Runner's World checked 11 years of results for Grandma's Marathon, from 1988 through 1998, and found a finisher in the 1990 race by the name of Paul D. Ryan, 20, of Minneapolis.
Ryan's middle name is Davis, and he was 20 in 1990. The finishing time listed was 4 hours, 1 minute and 25 seconds.
~ Research by Runner's World Magazine proving that Ryan was Lying

"No, I never asked for stimulus," Ryan said when questioned on reports that he had sought funds.
Ryan's statement directly counters the evidence of four letters obtained by the AP which the congressman wrote to Energy Secretary Steven Chu, praising energy programs supported by the stimulus and requesting funds for initiatives in his district.
~ Associated Press report that Paul Ryan openly lied to the media about whether he asked for stimulus funds for his district

On Paul Ryan's Republican National Convention Speech:
"Three Words: Dazzling, Deceiving, Distracting"
. . . to anyone paying the slightest bit of attention to facts, Ryan’s speech was an apparent attempt to set the world record for the greatest number of blatant lies and misrepresentations slipped into a single political speech. On this measure, while it was Romney who ran the Olympics, Ryan earned the gold.

12. Clint Eastwood Talks to an Empty Chair

I don't . . . I don't . . . I don't know . . . Clint Eastwood is 82 years old. And I don't know if that's what was going on there . . . That was the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen at a political convention in my entire life, and it will be the weirdest thing I’ve ever seen if I live to be one hundred.”
~ Rachel Maddow on MSNBC

I could never wrap my head around why the world and the President that Republicans describe bears so little resemblance to the world and the President that I experience. And now I know why.
There is a President Obama that only Republicans can see.

13. The 47%

~ Romney on a secretly recorded video posted by Mother Jones

Here was Romney raw and unplugged—sort of unscripted. With this crowd of fellow millionaires, he apparently felt free to utter what he really believes and would never dare say out in the open. He displayed a high degree of disgust for nearly half of his fellow citizens, lumping all Obama voters into a mass of shiftless moochers who don't contribute much, if anything, to society, and he indicated that he viewed the election as a battle between strivers (such as himself and the donors before him) and parasitic free-riders who lack character, fortitude, and initiative.
~ Journalist David Corn, who leaked the 47% video with the help of the Anonymous filmmaker and James Carter IV, grandson of President Jimmy Carter

All of us make mistakes. . . . What people want to know, though, is you're not writing off a big chunk of the country because the way our democracy works.
This is a big country. And people disagree a lot, but one thing I’ve never tried to do – and I think none of us can do in public office – is suggest that because someone doesn’t agree with me that they’re victims or they’re unpatriotic.
~ President Obama on CBS, The David Letterman Show

Today Mitt Romney Lost the Election
You can mark my prediction now: A secret recording from a closed-door Mitt Romney fundraiser, released today by David Corn at Mother Jones, has killed Mitt Romney's campaign for president.

14. Fire Big Bird and Cut PBS

New Minas on Daily Kos

What things would I cut from spending? Well, first of all, I will eliminate all programs by this test, if they don't pass it: Is the program so critical it's worth borrowing money from China to pay for it? And if not, I'll get rid of it. Obamacare's on my list. ... I'm sorry, Jim, I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I'm going to stop other things. I like PBS, I love Big Bird. Actually like you, too. But I'm not going to -- I'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from China to pay for. That's number one.

And I -- and I went to my staff, and I said, "How come all the people for these jobs are -- are all men." They said, "Well, these are the people that have the qualifications." And I said, "Well, gosh, can't we -- can't we find some -- some women that are also qualified?"
And -- and so we -- we took a concerted effort to go out and find women who had backgrounds that could be qualified to become members of our cabinet.
I went to a number of women's groups and said, "Can you help us find folks," and they brought us whole binders full of women.

Mr. Biden, clearly delighted to come to President Obama’s rescue, relished his role, addressing his opponent as “my friend” but dismissing his arguments as “malarkey.” He laughed at Mr. Ryan’s remarks so often and so heartily that at times he seemed like a guest at a comedy club roast, not a vice president debating the fate of the nation with his opponent.

You mentioned the Navy, for example, and that we have fewer ships than we did in 1916. Well, Governor, we also have fewer horses and bayonets, because the nature of our military's changed. We have these things called aircraft carriers, where planes land on them. We have these ships that go underwater, nuclear submarines.

18. Hurricane Sandy

I’ve got a job to do here in New Jersey that’s much bigger than Presidential politics and I could care less about any of that stuff… if you think right now I give a damn about presidential politics then you don’t know me.
~ Romney's Surrogate, Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey, when asked if he would let the Republican candidate visit the state

If President Obama wins re-election on Tuesday, the historical memory of the race might turn on the role played by Hurricane Sandy.
Already, some analysts are describing the storm as an “October surprise” that allowed Mr. Obama to regain his footing after stumbling badly in the first presidential debate and struggling to get back on course. Some Republicans seem prepared to blame a potential defeat for Mitt Romney on the storm, and the embrace of Mr. Obama by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and other public officials.
~ Nate Silver on the importance of Hurricane Sandy

The election isn't gonna be moved. It's gonna happen Tuesday. Of course, the opposite theory is, “What the hell is Christie doing? He's giving Obama a chance to look presidential, clean up a state, look competent, look like he cares and so forth. What's a Republican doing propping up Obama?"

19. Nate Silver Vs. Unskewed Polls

Nate Silver could be a one-term celebrity.
~ Dylan Byers on Politico

Nate Silver is a man of very small stature, a thin and effeminate man with a soft-sounding voice that sounds almost exactly like the “Mr. New Castrati” voice used by Rush Limbaugh on his program. In fact, Silver could easily be the poster child for the New Castrati in both image and sound. Nate Silver, like most liberal and leftist celebrities and favorites, might be of average intelligence but is surely not the genius he's made out to be. His political analyses are average at best and his projections, at least this year, are extremely biased in favor of the Democrats.
~ Dean Chambers, founder of Unskewed Polls, on Examiner ~ this paragraph has now been edited out of the article

Fox News Loses Its Mind Over Election Results
~ Headline on NY Mag

This is a bad day for Republican pollsters, and it’s something that they should be held accountable for. You have to tell your clients the truth, and you have to be accurate. And to miss so many states and to be this far off, your Fox News viewers ought to be outraged, because day in and day out they were told that Mitt Romney was going to win, and the fact is Ohio was never up, Wisconsin was never up, Pennsylvania was never up…the published polls were correct. Nate Silver was correct. But the Republican establishment polls were wrong.

21. Obama Wins Again For All the Right Reasons

Photobucket

"A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words"
Kevin Drum on Mother Jones

From a righteous rant by Rachel Maddow on MSNBC (click here for full transcript)

That happened (the re-election of Barack Obama). That really happened.
We are not going to have a Supreme Court that will overturn Roe versus Wade.
There will be no more Antonin Scalias and Samuel Alitos added to this court.
We're not going to repeal health reform.

Nobody is going to kill Medicare and make old people in this generation or any other generation fight it out on the open market to try to get health insurance.
We are not going to do that.
We are not going to give a 20% tax cut to millionaires and billionaires and expect programs like food stamps and kid's insurance to cover the cost of that tax cut.

We'll not make you clear it with your boss if you want to get birth control under the insurance plan that you're on.
We are not going to redefine rape.
We are not going to amend the United States Constitution to stop gay people from getting married.

We are not going to double Guantanamo.
We are not eliminating the department of energy or the department of education or housing at the federal level.
We are not going to spend $2 trillion on the military that the military does not want.
We are not scaling back on student loans, because the country's new plan is that you should borrow money from their parents.

We are not vetoing the Dream Act.
We are not self-deporting.

We are not letting Detroit go bankrupt.
We are not starting a trade war with China on Inauguration Day in January.

We are not going to have, as a President, a man who once led a mob of friends to run down a scared gay kid, to hold him down and forcibly cut his hair off with a pair of scissors while that kid cried and screamed for help, and there was no apology not ever.

We are not going to have a Secretary of State John Bolton.
We are not bringing Dick Cheney back.
We are not going to have a foreign policy shop stocked with architects of the Iraq War.
We are not going to do it.
We had the choice to do that if we wanted to do that as a country, and we said no last night, loudly.

Ohio really did go to President Obama last night.
And he really did win.
And he really was born in Hawaii.
And he really is legitimately President of the United States, again.

And the Bureau of Labor Statistics did not make up a fake unemployment rate last month.
And the Congressional Research Service really can find no evidence that cutting taxes on rich people grows the economy.
And the polls were not screwed to oversample Democrats.
And Nate Silver was not making up fake projections about the election to make conservatives feel bad. Nate Silver was doing math.

And climate change is real.
And rape really does cause pregnancy sometimes.
And evolution is a thing.

And Benghazi was an attack on us, it was not a scandal by us.
And nobody is taking away anyone's guns.
And taxes have not gone up.
And the deficit is dropping, actually.

And Saddam Hussein did not have weapons of mass destruction.
And the moon landing was real.
And FEMA is not building concentration camps.
And U.N. election observers are not taking over Texas.

And moderate reforms of the regulations on the insurance industry and the financial services industry in this country are not the same thing as communism.

. . . And the if the Republican party and the conservative movement and the conservative media is stuck in a vacuum-sealed door-locked spin cycle of telling each other what makes them feel good and denying the factual, lived truth of the world, then we are all deprived as a nation of the constructive debate about competing feasible ideas about real problems.

Last night the Republicans got shellacked, and they had no idea it was coming. And we saw them in realtime, in real humiliating time, not believe it, even as it was happening to them. And unless they are going to secede, they are going to have to pop the factual bubble they have been so happy living inside if they do not want to get shellacked again, and that will be a painful process for them, but it will be good for the whole country, left, right, and center.
