NY Times Debunks #Benghazi ~ Pop! Go the Tea Party Heads

The New York Times published the real story behind the Benghazi attack and Tea Party heads are 'splodin' all over the Right. They just can't let go of their favorite conspiracy theory, that all of this was either orchestrated by Al Qaeda and approved by Obama, or that Obama and Hillary and Susan Rice conspired to "ignore" the death and destruction. Either Obama did nothing, or Obama is a mastermind! Whatever - nothing can change the Tea Party minds!

Months of investigation by The New York Times, centered on extensive interviews with Libyans in Benghazi who had direct knowledge of the attack there and its context, turned up no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the assault.
. . . Fifteen months after Mr. Stevens’s death, the question of responsibility remains a searing issue in Washington, framed by two contradictory story lines.

One has it that the video, which was posted on YouTube, inspired spontaneous street protests that got out of hand. This version, based on early intelligence reports, was initially offered publicly by Susan E. Rice, who is now Mr. Obama’s national security adviser.

The other, favored by Republicans, holds that Mr. Stevens died in a carefully planned assault by Al Qaeda to mark the anniversary of its strike on the United States 11 years before. Republicans have accused the Obama administration of covering up evidence of Al Qaeda’s role to avoid undermining the president’s claim that the group has been decimated, in part because of the raid that killed Osama bin Laden.

The investigation by The Times shows that the reality in Benghazi was different, and murkier, than either of those story lines suggests. Benghazi was not infiltrated by Al Qaeda, but nonetheless contained grave local threats to American interests. The attack does not appear to have been meticulously planned, but neither was it spontaneous or without warning signs.

We have seen no evidence that the video was widely seen in Benghazi, a very isolated area, or that it was a leading cause. What we do know is that September 11 [the date of the 2012 attack] was not an accident. These are terrorist groups, some of them linked to or ... self-claimed as al-Qaeda linked. ... Before I go on, I wanted to make a very good point that [reporter David D. Kirkpatrick] put out. Look, it is not about al-Qaeda as the only terrorist organization.
. . . There was a group there that was involved that's linked to al-Qaeda. What we never said -- and I didn't have security look behind the door, that's for other members of Congress. ... Those sources and methods I've never claimed. What I have claimed, and rightfully so, is Ambassador Stevens [who was killed in the attack] and others alerted, well in advance, that they had a security threat.

If Times reporter David Kirkpatrick truly found “no evidence that Al Qaeda or other international terrorist groups had any role in the [Benghazi] assault,” this must be because he spent little effort to uncover any.

Boehner and McConnell and nearly the entire GOP Senators (and we'll soon find out probably at least half the GOP House) are not conservatives getting tricked into being progressives. They are progressives tricking you (and me) into thinking they are sometimes conservative. This was an easy call for anybody with a conservative inkling to vote against. All the pretend "negotations" between the President, and Harry Reid, and Biden, and McConnell, and then Boehner wouldn't budge, and then McConnell was driving a hard bargain, then....blah, blah, blah, they're drinking Scotch during these "meetings" plotting what the next "impasse" will be to keep dragging you and me along - it's all a show folks! The GOP leadership and the Obama administration and Democratic party are ONE IN THE SAME. They need each other to keep themselves in power. I for one am done being the GOP's useful idiot. 1988 was the last time we had a conversative leader of our party. 25+ years is too long.

Republicans had everything going for them. A horrible economy. A weak incumbent. Motivated voters. Now it’s time for the GOP to face reality and clean house. They need a new message, and new messengers.

The problem is, Republicans lost the personal freedom argument when Santorum, Akin, Ryan, etc., advocated no abortion exception in the case of rape or incest. I overheard a debate the day after the election -- a 70-ish man was complaining that Obamacare meant the government would tell him what snacks he could put in his vending machines. His adult daughter retorted that forcing her to bear a rapist's child was "a slightly larger inconvenience."

Obama went into the first debate thinking (in his mind, knowing) that he was way ahead, could coast to victory, and all he had to do was be "likeable" by not being too "mean" to Romney. And he came out and was trounced in the debate.
Flash forward to the third debate. Romney went into it thinking (in his mind, knowing) that he was way ahead. And yet, even after seeing Obama's performance in similar circumstances, Romney still thought he could coast to victory, and all he had to do was be "likeable" by not being too "mean" to Obama.

People ... if we want to win the Senate we need to avoid nominating individuals who fit the negative stereotypes that define the Left’s description of Conservatives. Todd Akin may be a good man and may share the right values but he was an incredibly weak (and not too bright) candidate. We gave this one away!!

I hope that the anti-Romney folks are happy with themselves.
It's obvious what happened here; the evangelicals and "no compromise" folks didn't turn out. Romney got fewer votes than McCain. All of the freepers who threatened not to come out carried through on their threat, and they gave away the Senate right along with it.
Thanks for making sure ObamaCare is here to stay.
