Revelations of Comey Day

Ex-FBI Director James Comey made his much-anticipated appearance on Capital Hill in Washington last week, appearing before the Senate Intelligence Committee.

Oh what a day it was!

His opening statement had been released the day before so the Senators had time to think up some interesting questions, and Comey had a chance to share his encounters with President Donald Trump just before he was fired.

Why did Comey choose to speak publicly? He was afraid the President would spin things differently than the truth - in other words, he called the President a liar. More than once.

The folks in the FBI were absolutely not amused that President Trump fired Director James Comey. And Trump hasn't made things any better by changing the story of how and why he did it from hour to hour for three days.

"When I decided to [fire Comey], I said to myself, you know, this Russia thing with Trump and Russia is a made up story."

Trump Spokesman Sean Spicer on SNL

Trump has the worst spokespeople in the known world, but especially Press Secretary Sean Spicer, who is a nervous wreck who raises his voice and can't seem to tell the truth. But last weekend Saturday Night Live took care of him. In a skit for the ages, Melissa McCarthy lampooned the dimwit shrieking at reporters and even attacking them with his podium.

Spicer accused SNL of being "mean" to him, while Trump was appalled that a woman played one of his cronies. The truth is, Spicer deserves every joke told about him. When you watch his actual press conferences and interviews, SNL hardly had to exaggerate reality to make him look ridiculous. Now there is talk of Rosie O'Donnell playing Steve Bannon and we can't wait to see it!

Kellyanne Conway Invents Fake Bowling Green Massacre

In order to justify the Muslim Ban, Trump spokesperson Kellyanne Conway invented a hoax terrorist attack and talked about it on national TV. "The Bowling Green Massacre" took over both the airwaves and social media as people tried to fathom why we need fake attacks when there have been plenty of home-grown attacks.

But oh well - nothing has to make sense anymore, right?

Trump Lies, or Alternative Facts

Trump-speak took a turn towards the world of 1984 this week as Kellyanne Conway coined the phrase "Alternative Facts" - otherwise known as "Lies." This happened after a press conference by Trump's spokesperson, Sean Spicer, in which he stated that in spite of factual pictures to the contrary, "This was the largest audience ever to witness an inauguration, period, both in person and around the globe.”

In an interview on NBC's "Meet the Press," host Chuck Todd pressed Trump senior adviser Kellyanne Conway about why the White House on Saturday had sent Spicer to the briefing podium for the first time to claim that "this was the largest audience to ever witness an inauguration, period."
"You're saying it's a falsehood. And they're giving -- Sean Spicer, our press secretary -- gave alternative facts," she said.
Todd responded: "Alternative facts aren't facts, they are falsehoods."
Conway then tried to pivot to policy points. But later in the interview, Todd pressed Conway again on why the White House sent Spicer out to make false claims about crowd size, asking: "What was the motive to have this ridiculous litigation of crowd size?"
"Your job is not to call things ridiculous that are said by our press secretary and our president. That's not your job," Conway said.
Todd followed up: "Can you please answer the question? Why did he do this? You have not answered it -- it's only one question."
Conway said: "I'll answer it this way: Think about what you just said to your viewers. That's why we feel compelled to go out and clear the air and put alternative facts out there."
Trump himself directed Spicer to go to the White House briefing room to talk about the inauguration crowd size, Conway told CNN's Athena Jones on Sunday.

Trump Attacks the Press

Donald Trump is now the GOP nominee, so he should expect greater scrutiny from the news media. But Toupee-nator doesn't know how the news media works, and that makes him upset. He wants praise and thanks. All the time. If you don't have something good to say about Trump, you are a sleazy loser. Sad.

Trump was ticked-off that the media wanted to ask him questions about "millions" he supposedly raised for veterans, when there was no proof the vets received the money. God forbid the press should ask questions!

For a year, the news media laughed at Trump and fawned over him for ratings. In return, he kept reporters penned up in a sort of corral behind at fence at most of his events. Now he feels hurt that they are asking him hard questions, so he treats them just like one of his toadies such as the pitiful Chris Christie, calling them names and slamming them for doing their jobs. But unlike Christy, the media doesn't work for Trump, even though it has seemed that way to the public. Maybe this press conference marks the day the media woke up and turned against their grumbly cash cow.

“The press should be ashamed of themselves,” he said. Reporters “are not good people,” he said. “The political press is among the most dishonest people that I’ve ever met,” he said. “The press is so dishonest and so unfair,” he said, without identifying a single thing anyone in the media said on this topic that wasn’t true. When ABC News reporter Tom Llamas asked Trump about his well-known penchant for exaggeration, Trump said, “What I don’t want is when I raise millions of dollars, have people say, like this sleazy guy right over here from ABC. He’s a sleaze in my book.” When Llamas asked why, Trump responded, “You’re a sleaze because you know the facts and you know the facts well.” And this may have been the most revealing part:
“Instead of being like, ‘Thank you very much, Mr. Trump’ or ‘Trump did a good job,’ everyone’s saying ‘Who got it, who got it, who got it,’ and you make me look very bad. I have never received such bad publicity for doing such a good job.”
He actually believes that it’s the job of political reporters covering a presidential candidate to write “Thank you very much, Mr. Trump.” It’s not the press’ job to discover the truth or ask questions or hold the powerful accountable; their job is to promote him and compliment him. And when he doesn’t get the glowing coverage he wants, he attacks.

The billionaire had called the news conference to announce an accounting of his at least $5.6 million in fundraising for veterans groups, but spent most of the 40 minutes criticizing and insulting reporters -- collectively and at times individually -- as "dishonest," "not good people," sleazy, and among the worst human beings he has ever met.
And he vowed the White House briefing room would be just as combative as the Trump Tower lobby, where the developer addressed reporters Tuesday, should he ascend to the Oval Office.
"Yeah, it is going to be like this," Trump said when asked if this is how he would behave with the press as president. "You think I'm gonna change? I'm not gonna change."

It's been brought to light that in the past, specifically during the 1990s after his break-up with wife Ivana, Donald Trump liked to play phone games with reporters, pretending to be his own publicist. He used the aliases John Miller and John Barron. When asked about it in the past, Trump admitted that he pranked the reporter, but now he denies it ever happened.

TRUMP: "No, I don't know anything about it - you're telling me about it for the first time and it doesn't sound like my voice at all. I have many, many people that are trying to imitate my voice - you can imagine that. And this sounds like one of the scams. One of the many scams. This doesn't sound like me.

A recording obtained by The Washington Post captures what New York reporters and editors who covered Trump’s early career experienced in the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s: calls from Trump’s Manhattan office that resulted in conversations with “John Miller” or “John Barron” — public-relations men who sound precisely like Trump himself — who indeed are Trump, masquerading as an unusually helpful and boastful advocate for himself, according to the journalists and several of Trump’s top aides.

In 1991, Sue Carswell, a reporter at People magazine, called Trump’s office seeking an interview with the developer. She had just been assigned to cover the soap opera surrounding the end of Trump’s 12-year marriage to Ivana, his budding relationship with the model Marla Maples and his rumored affairs with any number of celebrities who regularly appeared on the gossip pages of the New York newspapers.

Within five minutes, Carswell got a return call from Trump’s publicist, a man named John Miller, who immediately jumped into a startlingly frank and detailed explanation of why Trump dumped Maples for the Italian model Carla Bruni. “He really didn’t want to make a commitment,” Miller said. “He’s coming out of a marriage, and he’s starting to do tremendously well financially.”

As a sportswriter more than 30 years ago, I called Donald Trump’s office in New York and was put on the phone with a man who said he was John Barron, a spokesman for Trump who sounded so much like his boss and used many of the same phrases that I kept interrupting him.
“Wait, is this Donald?” I asked at least three times during the interview.
“Oh, no” the man calling himself John Barron said, adding something along the lines that it was an interesting thought.

On Friday, the Washington Post reported what sports writers covering the New Jersey Generals of the United States Football League discovered in 1985 — that Trump, who owned the Generals at the time, often posed as someone else in order to praise himself or to say something he could later deny.
Trump’s apparent ghost spokesman sometimes spelled his name “Barron” — Trump named his youngest son Barron and reportedly admired hotel magnate Barron Hilton — and sometimes Baron. He also used the name John Miller, according to the Washington Post.
After that phone call from 1985, I called Trump’s secretary and was told that John Barron was not on any of the company’s organizational charts but was Trump’s right-hand man. You could almost hear the wink in her voice.

Interviewer: What is your position there?

John Miller: Well, I’m sort of handling PR because he gets so much of it. And frankly, I mean, I could tell you off the record. Until I get to know you, off the record, I can tell you that he didn’t care if he got bad PR until he got his divorce finished.

So when he got a lot of bad financial stuff, he liked it because, you know, it was good because he could get a divorce finished. And once his divorce is finished, if you noticed since then he’s doing well financially and he’s doing well in every other way. The licensing was five to nothing. And people are saying how come all of a sudden he’s doing so well? And then I guess Newsday about two weeks ago did a story on that. So I’ve sort of been put in here to handle because I’ve never seen anybody get so many calls from the press.

Interviewer: Where did you come from?

John Miller: I basically worked for different firms. I worked for a couple of different firms, and I’m somebody that he knows and I think somebody that he trusts and likes. So I’m going to do this a little part time, and then, yeah, go on with my life, too.

Interviewer: Is he trying to -- I mean, is Marla trying to reconcile all this or is this --

John Miller: Marla wants to be back with him and he wants to be with her, but he just, he just feels it’s too soon.

Interviewer: What about this Ivana thing? It says in the Newsday Trump also told friends that when he and Ivana met last week, she indicated that she would be interested in reconciliation?

John Miller: Ivana wants to get back with Donald, but she --

Interviewer: Really? After saying on Barbara Walters that she never would?

John Miller: What is she going to say? What is she going to say? She’s going to say when he’s with somebody else and had other people lined up, is she going to say, “Yes, I want to get back. I want to get back.” You know, she’s a pretty savvy woman and she’s not going to say -- I mean, he’s living with Marla and he’s got three other girlfriends, and then, and she’s not going to say, I really want to get back, you know? She wants to get back, she’s told it to a lot of her friends and she’s told it to him, but it’s so highly unlikely. That’s off the record. He left. I mean, it was his choice to leave and he left.

Interviewer: He left for Marla.

John Miller: No, he didn’t leave, no. See, that’s the biggest misconception of this whole thing. The second question I asked about after the ring was the biggest misconception is he left. He didn’t leave for Marla. He really left for himself. He didn’t leave for Marla. He never left for Marla. He was going to leave anyway. Marla was there, but he was going to leave anyway. Whether there was a Marla or not he was going to leave anyway.
