Paul Ryan Vice-Presidential Buzz

1. Ryan has surged on InTrade's prediction market in the past two days, making him the #1 contender ahead of Ohio Senator Rob Portman.

2. Ryan was on vacation in Colorado this week, but appeared at a memorial service today near Milwaukee for victims of Sunday's shootings at a Sikh temple...

3. ...and a mysterious charter plane from Boston to Ryan's hometown of Janesville, WI was reported this afternoon.

4. Breitbart News has learned that one major news network was alerting producers that Romney could announce his choice today...

5. ...and Romney is due to begin a bus tour tomorrow that will take him through several swing states--and which is thought to be a chance to showcase his running mate.

6. It is not unprecedented for campaigns to announce the candidate for Vice President on a Friday night. Barack Obama announced Joe Biden as his pick on a late Friday night/early Saturday morning in 2008.

7. Update: Tagg Romney was also in southwestern Wisconsin today--with Paul Ryan--to attend the Sikh memorial ceremony and represent his father.

Take note, veep watchers: Earlier today, a charter plane took off in Boston, stopped in Chicago, then flew to the tiny airport in Janesville, Wis. Janesville, of course, is the hometown of Representative Paul Ryan, a top vice-presidential contender. According to a source on the ground, the plane is still in Wisconsin.

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, himself often mentioned as a top-tier candidate for vice president, today recommended Wisconsin Congressman Paul Ryan for the job.
Speaking this afternoon at RedState Gathering 2012 in Jacksonville, Fla., Jindal’s message of responsible spending and education reform had plenty of attendees sold on him as the vice presidential candidate.

Paul Ryan Is a Great Choice . . . By which I mean, Paul Ryan would be a terrible choice for vice president, so by all means, Mitt, proceed!

Republican Nut Fest Over Colorado Shooting

Well it does make me wonder, you know with all those people in the theater, was there nobody that was carrying that could’ve stopped this guy more quickly? I mean in Tyler, Texas, we had–my hometown–we had a shooter come in over a domestic matter, and just start shooting people. And it was a guy with a concealed carry–he got killed, but his shooting at this guy caused him to run and no doubt saved a lot of lives. He was a real hero.
I know that before we ever had concealed carry in Texas, there was a, just a senseless shooting years ago in Killeen, Texas, in a restaurant, and, you know, if we had had concealed carry permits at the time, there was a woman who had to leave her gun in her car, and if we’d had concealed carry the guy would’ve been stopped before he could’ve killed so many people.
. . . What really gets me as a Christian is to see the ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs, and then some senseless crazy act of terror like this takes place

Had someone been prepared and armed they could have stopped this "bad" man from most of this tragedy. He was two and three feet away from folks, I understand he had to stop and reload. Where were the men of flight 93???? Someone should have stopped this man. Someone could have stopped this man. Lives were lost because of a bad man, not because he had a weapon, but because noone was prepared to stop it. Had they been prepared to save their lives or lives of others, lives would have been saved.

I wish it wasn't the case, but all the earmarks, all the evidence points to this being a staged event. . . . You have the U.N. Treaty that they only need a few senators who are on the fence to vote for it, and Obama says he's going to sign in the next week-and-a-half. We have that treaty in trouble, on a razor's edge, then magically this happens and within hours, all the major media, Democrats, they come out and say - the New York Times, Bloomberg - all of them - "it's time to restrict guns" and that's what the U.N. Treaty clearly states. It allows registration, then confiscation. That's what Fast and Furious was about. . . . If they would stage Fast and Furious, if they would ship up to 20,000 guns and hand grenades to Mexico, and the memos came out to CBS News, to blame the 2nd Amendment, would they stage this?
There have been many staged events where you get a patsy, drug them up, usually it's someone in a government or university program, like Theodore Kaczynski, the Unabomber. (That's actually LA Times/Associated Press, but no one seems to know it) Then you set them up later down the road. And that's exactly what's happening here.
. . . Now what you do is have your black-op operator come in with a mask just like Columbine and other events. They do the killing. Then you either kill or drug a patsy who's waiting, with amnesiacs or other chemicals, who will then take the blame.

People will talk about unusually lethal weapons, that could be potentially a discussion you could have. But the fact of the matter is there are 30-round magazines that are just common. You simply can’t keep these weapons out of the hands of sick, demented individuals who want to do harm. And when you try to do it, you restrict our freedoms.

Health Care: Take Two Aspirin and SCOTUS in the Morning

With a little more than twenty-four hours to go before the Supreme Court is scheduled to release its last rulings of this Term, it is very likely that the Justices and their staffs are still doing some final editing on the opinion — or opinions — that will tell the constitutional fate of President Obama’s most important domestic policy: the massive overhaul of the way Americans get and pay for health insurance. The media and other pundits, and the academics, have all done their speculating on outcomes, and the blame games have started in anticipation that the ruling may turn out wrong for this or that constituency.

If the Court strikes down the law, Democrats will need to redouble our efforts, fighting to ensure universal health care that’s affordable and accessible to every American is a reality.
If the Court upholds the law, dangerous Tea Party extremists will go on a rampage. Backed by Super PAC’s and shadowy front groups like Karl Rove’s Crossroads GPS, they’ll do everything in their power to defeat President Obama, demonize Democrats who fought for health care reform and, if they win the election, dismantle the law piece-by-piece.

In the end, you have to make a prediction and take responsibility for it. I believe the mandate will not be invalidated tomorrow. Far less important, I expect the principal opinion will be written by the Chief Justice; a majority of the Court will find it has jurisdiction; and the challenge to the Medicaid expansion will be rejected.
Most observers disagree. There are certainly good reasons to believe the Court will invalidate the mandate. Most important, at the oral argument, the questions of two critical Justices – Justice Kennedy and the Chief Justice – were on the whole critical of the mandate’s constitutionality.
But in the end, based on the entire mix of information I have, I think the mandate will not be struck down tomorrow. (I don’t have any inside information, nor does anyone else.) My prediction includes the possibility that there will not be a single majority opinion for the theory on which the mandate is upheld, and even the thin possibility that the Court will not have a majority to find the mandate constitutional.

Right now it feels more like waiting for the results of my prostate exam. If the law is upheld (a good result), life will go on with all its attendant pleasures and travails. If the law, or more likely, parts of it, are struck down, like an exam’s bad news we are still left with a series of options, some less appealing than others. In any case, like the exam, the process has been annoying, and I for one will be happy when it’s over. Mostly, because its been an unneccessary pain in the butt.

There Will Be Outrage!








I spent a great deal of time vetting Justice Roberts in making my recommendation to President [George W.] Bush that he appoint Chief Justice Roberts to the court. One of the traits I most admired about him, and this is very consistent in his judicial decision making, is to decide decisions on the most narrow grounds possible, to not get to constitutional issues you don't have to in order to dispose of a dispute....So in that respect, I expect Justice Roberts to follow that approach in deciding this case.
That may mean, that he's going to be pushing the court to perhaps not make a decision on this case, wait until 2015, when the penalties on individual mandate come into play....Perhaps the chief justice is not going to go that way, but I wouldn't be surprised if he did.

I Love the Smell of SCOTUS in the Morning ~ With Updates

Continuing the Speculation Fest of Fear, Loathing, Anticipation, and Boredom that started last week as we wait for verdicts on Obamacare and Immigration.

UPDATE: And it's over! No Health Care Ruling until Thursday, sorry!

Today they ruled on three things:

1. Juveniles cannot be given life in prison without parole. Good all around.
2. They refused to hear an appeal from the State of Montana about corporations buying elections, therefore they upheld their previous Citizen's United decision. That's good for Mitt Romney, because as he says "corporations are people, my friends." But the decision will only get the Democratic base more fired up.
3. The biggest deal today - they threw out most of Arizona's state immigration law, except for the right to check someone's papers under "reasonable suspicion." Sheriff Joe Arpaio will be so happy about that, but it's also a win for the Obama Administration.

ZOMG! Immigrants in Arizona!!! (And yes, the show was filmed in Old Tucson) And not everyone was a White Anglo Saxon. The High Chapparral was my father's favorite show. He would roll over in his grave to hear how some Arizona Republicans think about immigration.
