Bernie-Brats Need to Stop Dissing the South! - Update with Paul Krugman

Win or Lose, the Bernie camp and rabid followers cannot let go of the fact that Hillary is ahead right now due to winning many of the Southern states on Super Tuesday. It really sticks in their craw that the great Southern base of the Democratic Party has a voice in this election. Bernie fans would rather pretend that a handful of delegates from Idaho, Utah, Washington State are more important the millions of votes already cast in the Southeast and Texas.

Bernie said most recently that the early Southern primaries "distort reality."





UPDATE One: Paul Krugman wrote a great column called "The Pastrami Principle" about why it is rather stupid to insult voters, but also that Bernie is deliberately spinning the "rigged" Southern primaries to give hope where there is no hope, to make his supporters believe he can still win in spite of the delegate math:

. . . Mrs. Clinton didn’t win big in the South on the strength of conservative voters; she won by getting an overwhelming majority of black voters. This puts a different spin on things, doesn’t it?
Is it possible that Mr. Sanders doesn’t know this, that he imagines that Mrs. Clinton is riding a wave of support from old-fashioned Confederate-flag-waving Dixiecrats, as opposed to, let’s be blunt, the descendants of slaves? Maybe. He is not, as you may have noticed, a details guy.
It’s more likely, however, that he’s being deliberately misleading...
. . . No, claims that Clinton wins in the South should be discounted are really aimed at misleading Sanders supporters, giving them an unrealistic view of the chances that their favorite can still win — and thereby keeping the flow of money and volunteers coming.
. . . But trying to keep his campaign going by misleading his supporters is not O.K. And sneering at millions of voters is truly beyond the pale, especially for a progressive.

Apparently the candidate agrees with many of the stupid theories and myths about the South which are rampant in Bernie-land:

  • The DNC "front-loaded" the primaries with Southern states to favor Hillary.
  • The white "base" in the South reject Bernie because they are old fashioned "conservative Dems" no better than Dixiecrat racists.
  • The black voters of the South are especially singled out for blame in ruining Bernie's chances, which many people of color view as a racist dog whistle.
  • Southern Dems don't matter anyway since they live in red states like South Carolina that won't go for the Democrats in the general election, so why should they get such a large proportion of delegates? 
The Bernie-brats seem incapable of understanding the delegate system on a good day, or the way the Democratic Party works.
  • Southern Dems are just as progressive as Dems anywhere. Think of Jimmy Carter, Al Gore, John Lewis, etc.
  • Dems in red states are outnumbered by Republicans, so their votes are usually cancelled out in the general election. Therefore it is imperative that their voices be heard during Primary Season, and they turned out by the hundreds of thousands. 
  •  Bernie got votes in the South, but Hillary simply got more, and therefore earned more delegates. His surrogates claim now that he never tried to win in the South, but that is smoke and mirrors, with a good bit of sour grapes too.
  •  If Bernie had invested more time and money in southern states, he might have done better, but he won't take responsibility for his own losses, and would rather blame voters.
  • Any student of recent election history can clearly see that the South is the future of the Democratic Party. Demographics are destiny, and states such as Florida, Georgia, South and North Carolina, and even Texas will not always be red - it's just a matter of time.

Justice Antonin Scalia was talking to some Law Students at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, and urged them to start an "Revolt" if their taxes go up. Yeah, that's good advice for a group in Law School! Justice Scalia seems to think he is back in Pre-Revolution Pre-TeaParty 'Merica. He must have learned history in the same school as Sarah Palin. He's no George Washington, that's for sure. But Scalia is definitely revolting.

During an event at the University of Tennessee’s law school on Tuesday, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia suggested to the capacity crowd that perhaps they should revolt against the U.S government if their taxes ever get too high.
During a question and answer part of the event, a student asked Scalia about the constitutionality of a federal income tax. Scalia assured the questioner that the tax was in fact permissible by the constitution, but added that if it ever became too high, “perhaps you should revolt.”
The remark, first reported by the Knoxville News Sentinel, has become a common rhetorical flourish for conservatives nationwide during the Obama presidency.

Scalia also said that he and other justices do not let politics influence their decisions, and that he believes that the U.S. Constitution is a fixed law.
"The Constitution is not a living organism for Pete’s sake,” he said. "It's a law. It means what it meant when it was adopted."

Scalia is a partisan hack who is serving a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land. He may be the worst Supreme Court justice in the history of the nation, and now he is calling for people to disobey their government.

At what point does a Supreme Court justice agitating for a seeming violent revolution and calling on law students to put faith above state not make people wonder if we are (at least) tip-toeing around the line that is called 'treasonous'.

A&E Reversal Keeps Bigot Phil Robertson on Duck Dynasty

With A&E's decision Friday to bring Robertson back to its most-watched show, it remains to be seen if it can mend fences with both sides — or at least with those viewers who hold opposing views.

The channel's interest is in ratings and revenue, not refereeing social discord.

Will those who called for an A&E boycott unless Robertson returned be satisfied? Will "Duck Dynasty" fans who enjoy the Louisiana duck call-making family but were offended by Robertson's comments watch again?

. . . Within a day of Robertson's removal, more than a half-million people liked an impromptu Facebook page demanding A&E be boycotted until he returns. A petition calling for A&E to bring him back reached 250,000 signatures and counting in about a week.

The controversy similarly ensnared the Cracker Barrel restaurant chain, which removed "Duck Dynasty"-related merchandise from its shelves and then reversed course and apologized after being hit with complaints.

Some of Robertson's fans are pledging they'll be part of a "Chick-Phil-A National Support Day" on Jan. 21.
As of early Friday afternoon, there were about 25,000 "likes" and nearly 165,000 "guests" on the Chick-Phil-A-Day Facebook Page.
The idea, according to the Facebook campaign, is this.
1. Wear your Duck Commander or camouflage gear.
2. Eat at Chick-fil-A.
In August 2012, you'll likely recall, that boosted sales at the chain as conservatives showed their support for the company's president, Dan Cathy, and his stand against same-sex marriage.
Chick-fil-A says it has nothing to do with the upcoming Chick-Phil-A Day.

This is why A&E now has, if not an obligation, a golden opportunity. The network should return Robertson and Duck Dynasty to the air, but not in the adulterated, cartoon version that has conservatives so besotted (a Facebook page calling for a boycott against A&E has generated over 1.8 million likes). No, Duck Dynasty should get real. It should show Robertson being as homophobic as he pleases, in his home, his church, his community. The show’s editors have previously been criticized for asking Robertson to not say “Jesus” at the end of his prayers; they should now let him get his Jesus freak on, whether in words that invoke hellfire and damnation or those that profess to love the sinner but hate the sin. And, as long as the show’s producers “guide” reality along, they should film Robertson interacting with actual gay people. If the LGBT population of West Monroe, Louisiana is camera-shy, they can fly some folks in for a good old duck hunt. I bet Mary Cheney is pretty handy with a shotgun.

Duck Dynasty Patriarch Phil Robertson said some shocking things during an interview with GQ:
Out here in these woods, without any cameras around, Phil is free to say what he wants. Maybe a little too free. He’s got lots of thoughts on modern immorality, and there’s no stopping them from rushing out. Like this one:

“It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man’s anus. That’s just me. I’m just thinking: There’s more there! She’s got more to offer. I mean, come on, dudes! You know what I’m saying? But hey, sin: It’s not logical, my man. It’s just not logical.”

“I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once.

Statement from Phil via A&E released to Huffington Post:
“I myself am a product of the 60s; I centered my life around sex, drugs and rock and roll until I hit rock bottom and accepted Jesus as my Savior. My mission today is to go forth and tell people about why I follow Christ and also what the bible teaches, and part of that teaching is that women and men are meant to be together. However, I would never treat anyone with disrespect just because they are different from me. We are all created by the Almighty and like Him, I love all of humanity. We would all be better off if we loved God and loved each other.”

Later the A&E Network responded with "You're Fired."

We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty," A&E said in a statement. "His personal views in no way reflect those of A+E Networks, who have always been strong supporters and champions of the LGBT community. The network has placed Phil under hiatus from filming indefinitely."

While some of Phil’s unfiltered comments to the reporter were coarse, his beliefs are grounded in the teachings of the Bible. Phil is a Godly man who follows what the Bible says are the greatest commandments: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart” and “Love your neighbor as yourself.” Phil would never incite or encourage hate. We are disappointed that Phil has been placed on hiatus for expressing his faith, which is his constitutionally protected right. The politically correct crowd is tolerant of all viewpoints, except those they disagree with. I don’t agree with quite a bit of stuff I read in magazine interviews or see on TV. In fact, come to think of it, I find a good bit of it offensive.
I also acknowledge that this is a free country, and everyone is entitled to express their views. In fact, I remember when TV networks believed in the First Amendment. It is a messed-up situation when Miley Cyrus gets a laugh, and Phil Robertson gets suspended.

The First Amendment, like the constitution generally, only applies to the government, so if the government stops someone from talking or punishes them, that’s a First Amendment issue. If a private person says I won’t hire you or let you be on TV anymore, that’s not.
The idea is we don’t let the government decide what’s a good opinion, but we do let individuals decide what they think is offensive and what should be rewarded and what should be discouraged. That’s the way the marketplace of ideas is supposed to work.

TN Reporter Fired Over Rude Obama Headline Becomes RW Media Star

Original Editorial Headline Composed by Drew Johnson:
"Take your jobs plan and shove it, Mr. President: Your policies have harmed Chattanooga enough."
The Title has been changed to "President Obama's policies have harmed Chattanooga enough."

The editorial, which criticized the viability of Obama's economic plan on a local level, coincided with the president's visit Tuesday to Chattanooga. The Times Free Press determined that editorial page editor Drew Johnson's altered headline was "inappropriate."
"It was not the original headline approved for publication, and Johnson violated the normal editing process when he changed the headline," the announcement read. "The newspaper’s decision to terminate Johnson had nothing to do with the content of the editorial, which criticized the president’s job creation ideas and Chattanooga’s Smart Grid. The Free Press page has often printed editorials critical of the president and his policies."

Chattanooga Times Free Press officials denied they yielded to political pressure in firing editor Drew Johnson.
The reason given for the firing was a headline he wrote relating to Tuesday's visit to Chattanooga by President Obama.
TFP officials also claimed they had to block Mr. Johnson recently "from touting the benefits of pornography."
Mr. Johnson, since the surprise termination on Thursday, has made a round of TV and radio talk shows giving his version of the firing.
. . . The firing has made news from the Associated Press to the Drudge Report and Huffington Post.
Chattanooga Times Free Press officials said, "Contrary to statements made by former Free Press editor Drew Johnson and national media reports, Johnson was told on multiple prior occasions not to make material changes to editorials or headlines once they were approved by the editor responsible for the page.

It’s very common practice at our paper and I’m sure it is at a lot of papers to just plug in a space-holder headline or you know, you have a headline you’re not happy with and you change it at the last minute. And I probably did it myself once a week. In this case, I put in a placeholder that wasn’t good. It got time to publish the piece and I thought, ‘What goes with jobs plan?’ and I thought the Johnny Paycheck song, ‘Take this job and shove it.’ So I put that in there — put the title that you saw and the next day, while it was becoming literally the most read, not just editorial but [most read] thing ever on the paper’s website.”

So I was brought into human resources today and I was told, ‘You’re being fired for violating the policy that you have to have an editor sign off when you make a change to a headline,’” he said. “Well, I said, ‘That’s funny, because that policy wasn’t in place until after I wrote the piece and you guys told me that was the policy on Tuesday. And I wrote the piece on Monday.

Hasselbeck Hustles Over to Fox

The conservative voice on ABC's The View for the last decade is headed to Fox's daytime talk show Fox & Friends, replacing Gretchen Carlson, who'll be getting her own daytime Fox show in the fall.

Her last day on The View is Wednesday.

"We will miss her and wish her everything good," View co-host and executive producer Barbara Walters said in a statement.

I was frankly disappointed in David Gregory's choice of topics. To spend so many minutes on this non-issue of the Cherokee ancestry and about a minute and a half on Afghanistan is about as bad a set of priorities as I've seen. . . . I don't think Mr. Gregory handled it well.

After a full seven minutes or so of Cherokee chit-chat, Gregory apparently thought he needed to take us to an even less relevant topic, so he asked Brown about his mildly embarrassing assertion from last June that he’s met with “kings and queens” as a Senator. After that, Gregory tried to draw some more blood by asking Warren if she’s bothered that Brown paints her as an elitist by calling her “professor.” (She said it didn’t bother her.) It was about a third of the way through the debate when they turned to Warren’s record of defending/opposing asbestos victims.

Is there no end to the #NBCFail? David Gregory is being panned from both sides for his “Meet the Press”-style moderation at tonight’s debate between Mass. Sen. Scott Brown and challenger Elizabeth Warren. In fact, even the word “debate” is up for debate, as Gregory sat down with the two candidates for what he hoped would be a “healthy, cordial exchange.”
Gregory kicked off the night with a question about Warren’s supposed Native American heritage — the same topic which began the previous #MASEN debate — and asked if Brown’s use of “professor” in referring to Warren was meant as disparaging.
Gregory’s performance was so off-putting that even Warren supporters swore that the NBC hack was batting for the Republican.

The debate was moderated by David Gregory of Meet The Press who quickly revealed that he wasn’t interested in substance.
The first question went to Elizabeth Warren, and she was asked if she considers herself a minority. Warren delivered much of the same answer that she gave in the first debate that she is a person who has a Native American background.

I see Gregory more as the Tom Grunick (William Hurt) character from Broadcast News. He's not really capable of grasping nuance or complex strategic considerations, and he's thoroughly consumed by his popular success. His natural tendency is conservative, which makes him feel more comfortable around Republicans, and he's too simple to understand the need to obscure that for the sake of at least a semblance of journalistic integrity.
