CPAC sometimes feels like the Grammy Awards of movement conservatism. And if that’s the case, then Gohmert is Willie Nelson — accented and outspoken. And faced with hordes of fans, he’s enamoring. It’s not just a CPAC thing — his staffers tell me that they’re always juggling media invites — but here, Gohmert might as well be Elvis. Nobody doesn’t want a piece of Louie.

One of the things that we’ve heard over and over again since Vietnam is, you know, we don’t want to get in another un-winnable war like Vietnam. I’m not going to debate the merits of whether we should or should not have gone to Vietnam, but what I will tell you is, Vietnam was winnable, but people in Washington decided we would not win it!

Like any good conservative event, CPAC 2013 kicked off with a WAR PANEL featuring Rep. Louie Gohmert, noted WAR ENTHUSIAST. To the highlights:
  • Louie Gohmert describes seeing a dude wearing glasses. Says the guy looked “somewhat liberal” thanks to the specs. That’s right, corrected vision isn’t for freedom-lovers! See things with your all-American beer belly, not with your eyes!
  • Gohmert condemns the United States for withdrawing from Vietnam, because we totally could have won that war: “Vietnam was winnable, but people in Washington decided we would not win it.”
  • Speaking about the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan: “I know they’re Muslims, but they’re our friends.” Rebranding at work!

And so you can buy a bottle of Coke, take it home, you don’t have to ask what’s in it, or read the ingredients, or ask your friends about. You just take it home, you drink it. If you get two-thirds the way through your bottle of Coke and you look in and there is a rat head in what’s left in your Coke bottle, you do not say to yourself, 'You know, I'm wondering whether I'm going to finish all of the rest of this particular bottle of Coke this evening.'
You begin to wonder whether you'll buy Coke in the future, you go on local TV and you show the cool rat head. Coca-Cola has a very large problem worldwide. It damages the brand. Republican elected officials who vote for tax increases are rat heads in the Coke bottle. They damage the brand for everybody else.

Now in order to work together with people that you disagree with, there has to be mutual respect. That means I respect people that disagree with me on certain things, but they have to respect me too.
Just because I believe that states should have the right to define marriage in a traditional way does not make me a bigot.
Just because we believe life, all life — all human life is worthy of protection at every stage in its development does not make you a chauvinist.
In fact, the people that are really closed minded in American politics are the people that love to preach about the certainty of science in regard to our climate, but ignore the absolute fact that science has proven that life begins at conception.

I'm trying to understand how come there's no black people here. I'm trying to figure out why the outreach of the GOP and especially CPAC is not working with black citizens and I have yet to find an answer, only I get, all I've gotten is abrasive attitudes and people yelling because I guess I ask the tough question, just ask the simple question, where's the inclusion? Where are the black people? I don't know why that is so offensive?
